And*were it not for the advent of instant replay, the Red Sox would not have such immediate access to camera angles at better vantages than the usual runner at second base.

Yeah you are not alone in not understanding this hugely successful cheating scheme.

Apparently it was working:

During the series in question, the Times reports, the Red Sox went 5 for 8 with runners on second base, including a Rafael Devers home run. They went 1 for 6 and 3 for 10 in subsequent games

The Times reported that the video provided to the commissioner’s office shows Red Sox assistant athletic trainer Jon Jochim looking at his Apple Watch, then passing along a signal to outfielder Brock Holt and second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was on the disabled list at the time.

The video then purportedly shows Pedroia passing the information to teammate Chris Young on second base, who then relays it to the batter.

Sure sound clumsy and time consuming.

Pedroia. He was antsy sitting on the bench and wanted to impact the team.

Fire Farrell

DFA Buchholz

Trade Pedroia

I there a consitancy button on this site?

Teams have stolen signs since the game began. That's not illegal. Spying off the TV broadcast and relaying it to the hitter is. There will be a big punishment. Manfred said the penalty would be a deterrent for teams from doing it again. If it's a slap on the wrist, then it won't be a deterrent. If I had to guess, $1 mil org fine, fine and short suspension of Farrell to start next year, and loss of first rounder in 2018

Many smart people (the best people) are saying that the Sox won't forfeit any picks. The worst that may happen is a suspension for Farrell, Holt, Young and Pedroia. Manfred allegedly told the FO that he's not going to rule on this and he's giving Congress 6 months to figure it out.

If Torre is consistent with the way he hands out suspensions Farrell will get one game, and Holt, Young, and Pedrioa will get two innings each, staggered so they don't affect the team.

Torre gave Pineda 10 games after the pine tar stuff which was in line with prior cheating suspensions (Albert Belle). I couldn't find any suspensions based on sign stealing so this could be something new. My guess is that it'll be less than 10 games.

Probably so. Since these guys aren't Yankee players they'll get penalized to the fullest extent of the discretion of Torre. If your estimate is right then sucker punching someone (twice) is 1/3 as egregious as stealing signs electronically.

Never mind that what Sanchez did is a crime punishable by jail time if it happens anyplace other than on a baseball field.

That's not a great take. What suspension did Machado receive for ruining Pedey's season again? If I take out my senior accountant like that, I'd probably be going to jail.

Good point. Maybe Torre's motivation isn't completely pro-Yankee. He's just anti-Red Sox.

Something about this whole season has seemed a little off since day one, but now the full picture of this team is clear. They aren’t good guys. They’re bad guys, and rather than run from it, they’ve finally embraced a full heel turn. It’s about damn time. It is, for better worse (but probably better), who they are.

This is what the Red Sox needed, not just yesterday, but all season. They needed swagger, and they finally, belatedly have it. For all his genius, Chris Sale couldn’t give it to them. For all his anger, David Price couldn’t do it either. For all his grit, Dustin Pedroia couldn’t do it. For all his talent, Mookie Betts couldn’t do it. You can go all the way down the line without finding a guy to fill David Ortiz’s large, empty, swaggy shoes, or you could until yesterday. Gone are Big Papi’s cleats. In are Dombo’s snakeskin loafers, and he wears them well, as always.

This team is so unlikable that they are now incredibly likable. Sometimes good guys don't wear white.

Machado is a borderline dirty player (I saw he tried something similar on Gregorius on Monday), but it can at least be argued his dirtiness happens in the course of game action. Players can police that with by not diving into third but going in with the spikes a little high; I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened already.

Sanchez has no such defense.

Yup, there's no comparison between a borderline dirty slide and sucker punching someone during a brawl.

If there's no comparison between a sucker punch and a dirty slide in the MLB, then there really is no comparison to a sucker punch in the MLB and a sucker punch at the bar down the street. That's all I'm saying.

I don't see how this can possibly end well for John Farrell now. The Sox almost have to fire someone to make their statement that they don't condone cheating, and Farrell is the logical one. As has been said, he either knew about it - in which case he has to be fired - or he didn't know about it - in which case he has to be fired for not knowing what's going on. Unfortunately we don't still have Lovello sitting in the wings waiting, so the question now is who's going to be his successor?

We may not have liked what Farrell did every day but to give the devil his due, he's got this team to a 3 1/2 game lead in the ALE.

The lack of comparison isn't in the action itself - they're both dirty. The lack of comparison is in the penalty for it. When it happens on the field you get 3 days when you're not allowed to play baseball. On the street you may get 30 days in jail.

I'm not suggesting jail time for what happens on a baseball field but I do think that not being allowed to play baseball for three days is a small penalty for endangering the future of a player.

I think DD laughs this off and doesn't care. This situation will have no impact on Farrel.

What's worse for a career: being suckerpunched or having your knee damaged in a dirty slide?

Why don't you ask Bill Lee, who was suckered tackled from behind by Graig Nettles and lost all feeling in his arm. He was never really the same, although he did have one more decent season several years later.
