Are you suggesting he'd go 10-2 before the All-Star break and then get hit in the head, essentially ending his career?

HAhaha LOL That's the first thing that came to my mind too!

Jacksonianmarch, are you the 3-eyed Raven?

Reed almost cost us another game tonight.

I would like to see Maddox get a shot in a semi competitive situation.

Maybe they can send reed to organize hurricane relief efforts in Guam!

0 runs allowed. It was his first walk in 10 appearances.

This bullpen sucks balls!

Red Sox Bullpen in Extras: 55.2 IP with a 1.29 ERA

If you remove Doug Fister's 5.1 IP and 5 ER in extras, the Red Sox have a 0.54 ERA.

Barnes faced the heart of the O's order tonight and got the job done despite an error. The bullpen has sure come through in these extra inning games.

The bullpen has been amazing in these extended games.

I kept sitting there last night waiting for Barnes to implode. He didn't. I'm not very proud of myself - just an old new England way of looking at things I guess. We have some serous arms in the bullpen right now. In my lifetime, I've never seen a Sox team quite like this one.

It was the heart of the Os order in perhaps the most high leverage situation you can have. And he had to get an extra out. I'm not a fan of 'saves', but that is what I call a save. Great job.

By the end of the year, we will have pitched the most regular season innings in our history.

You don't make the playoffs under those circumstances unless your bullpen is solid!

SSS I know, whatever, but Carson Smith looks good out there. I'd really like to see him thrown into some higher leverage situations before season ends, maybe give him a 1 run save opportunity? Close game in 8th? Having him back and dominant in playoffs would be a huge boost.

Totally agree.

Even with all the injuries this staff has gone through, and now the Pedey, Nunez and Betts health issues, it looks like all the pieces might all come back just in time for the playoff run.

Smith looks like a serious bad ass........ I have very high hope for Smith.............. I hope we find he can prove that in the games before the playoffs just to solidify confidence.

Smith, Kelly who has looked super sharp lately, Garden Gnome, Reed, Price.......... these guys look like total shut down guys to me. We have a serious bunch of badasses in relief.

Sox lead all of MLB in extra inning wins, and more than half of them have been road wins.

Does this finally mean Dombrowski built a good bullpen for once?

I went from seeing our pen as our weakest (not weak) link in March to not needing to touch it this coming winter.

2018's pen looks strong AND deep:

Kimbrel

Smith

Thornburg

Kelly

Barnes

Ross

Workman

Wright

Hembree (out of options)

Scott

Maddox

Taylor

Martin

Johnson, Velazquez, Beeks, Elias, Haley, Cosart, Poyner, Buttrey

No upgrades needed. I want to see what Thornburg can do........

DD should be looking for a big bat if anything....

Yup.

And, if Thornburg starts out on the DL, we'll have Hembree, Wright, Maddox and Scott fighting for his slot.

Maybe they can trade a reliever or two for a first baseman...

A good one?

Better than a FA signee?

What could we get by trading Barnes, Hembree and Travis?

I am okay trading Hembree but might just hold onto Barnes as we don't know yet about Thornburgh. Not sure we can rely on Hanley to play much 1st base next year so if we get a good first baseman and don't resign Moreland, then we would need a backup first baseman and Travis fits that role. Maybe if we get Nunez or an equivalent utility player, the first base role could be filled in that way. I still think Devers position for 2018 remains to be determined. We need his bat but we also need his defense to get much better.

There will be many interesting discussions on where DD will take the team for next year. His judgment has been good so far with the possible exception of the cost and length of contract for Price. Price could well be a god send in the bull pen during the playoffs so he still seems to have a lot of value for the sox. The depletion of our minor league system has been a topic but so far I haven't seen a performance by those we traded that makes me think they would have helped the Sox.

Thornburg has thoracic outlet surgery. See Matt Harvey when you want to see what the outcomes are with that. You cannot count on Thornburg. If he comes back and throws well, good for you. If he doesn't, then that's the natural progression.

I like the inclusion of Smith, even though he had a rough outing yesterday. He has good stuff and throws strikes at a high rate. Hard to pick the last one but Scott as a lefty might be needed. Price can't pitch just to get one lefty out, he is more of a couple of inning guy.

Several of our RHPs do very well with LHBs:

OPS Against

.333 Smith (just 6 PAs) -.582 in 2015

.572 Kimbrel

.675 Reed

.690 Kelly

.720 Maddox

I'm not worried.

We could also go with 12 pitchers, even with 2 days off in the 5 game series, since I don't see us PH'ing much anyways.

Do we have enough healthy bodies to do much pinch hitting?

JF tried Workman and Abad in relief today and they both gave up runs. That may be a signal they will not be on the playoff roster . I didn't think either would make it so it makes sense to me.

Abad better make the playoff roster, or my deam of him striking out Judge on an eephas pitch to win the AL Championship will never come to fruition...

My point was, all our starters are better than any PH'ers we have.

I guess we may PH for Leon, if he starts.

Locks:

Kimbrel, Price, Kelly, Reed

Likely:

Barnes

2 or 3 from:

Smith, Workman, Maddox, Scott, Fister/Porcello

Long shots or impossibles:

Abad, Hembree
