  1. 1. Should the Red Sox Acquire Adrian Beltre from the Texas Rangers?

    • Yes, cut ties with Panda and eat his contract.

    • Yes, relegate Panda to the bench in a platoon role.
      2
    • No, stick with Panda when he returns from injury and keep him well stocked with belts.
      3
    • No, get another third baseman to fill the void

Beltre is coming up on his final contract year. The Rangers are in last place and Gallo is ready to take over as their future 3B, so they should not have a very high price to deal him. Beltre is still a tremendous fielder. That would plug our biggest defensive hole, and he can still drive the ball out of the park. Sandoval could still take many of the ABs against RHP, but I would give Beltre the bulk of the ABs.

I'm thinking we see Devers in the next couple of months. Would not overpay for Beltre.

Beltre is making $18M this year. Since we're ~1/3 of the way through the season we could get him for ~$12M which, if I remember Moon's salary total correctly, would put us around the LT limit.

Most of us seem to believe that DD has kept some money in reserve to pick up a player at the deadline if necessary and while we're not at the deadline NOW might be the right time. Think of it in terms of bringing in Kimbrel to pitch in the 8th when there are runners on base and big hitters coming up. A committed team does what it has to do at the time to win.

Picking up Beltre fills the defensive spot which we desperately need - and also gives us some power in the middle of the lineup - which we also need. Waiting for Devers is putting too much faith in an unproven rookie to save us. I'd go with the sure(er) thing.

DD sure as Hell should be kicking the tires on Beltre, if only to see what the Rangers would take.

Beltre is also under contract for 2018. That might reduce what the Rangers will take because it is a substantial salary dump.

No. He's injured and still can't run. I don't think the Rangers see Gallo as their future 3B.
I thought the Rangers had big plans for Gallo as a power hitting 3B.

The cost would have to be low, it would be a hedge against Devers not being ready in the second half.

I find it interesting that so far people are hopeful about Devers filling the hole at 3B in the second half, but noone has mentioned any hope for Panda. That speaks volumes to me.

Excellent analysis but I think you left out one big plus for signing AB - his leadership and hard nose play which this team sorely needs. Relying on a rookie AA prospect to save you from the worst 3B in the MLB? no thank you. Beltre can be had for a reasonable sum I believe so yes to all of this.

Very true.

Panda is the second coming of the Clay Buchholz Double Whammy - he'll either stink, or he'll play good and then get hurt.

Let's get some more responses on this poll and get it to DD. LOL!!

Texas is in the cellar at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if they fought their way back to relevancy over the next few months. I like Hou & Sea better of course, but have little faith in Oak & LAA at this point. Is Beltre even healthy?

I don't think Texas will sell yet, but maybe in June. Beltre took BP the other day and has been taking grounders. He will be back soon.

Absolutely. It would depend on the cost But Beltre destroys at Fenway, is still a good fielder, and of course is a great locker room guy. I think he'd be a perfect guy for 1-2 years till Devers is ready.

Pablo can go f*** himself.

I have to say, another veteran presence on the field and in the clubhouse could go a lot further than simply calling up a prospect. Youth is great, don't get me wrong, but we have a lot of that already.

Well, that's because some of us actually have to work and can't stay up til all hours of the night and can't goof off all day while at work.

I'm absolutely giving Pablo another chance. Trading for Beltre (if the price is right) or calling up Devers are moves that I'd consider at the trade deadline or maybe mid to late June.

It's May 12th and the Sox are 2 games over .500. We are not at the 'panic' stage.

Just thinking ahead since I have so much time on my hands.

I do question how relevant Beltre"s play with the Sox still is considering it was seven years ago. ..

It's not like he's declined at all. He's been an elite 3B on both offense and defense in all seven of those years since Fenway.

I saw a report on FB that Hernandez is considering season ending surgery. Unfortunately the link would not load.

Have any of you wonderful people heard anything about the topic?

If this is so, Holt must return healthy and be productive.

I think that Rutledge can do the job decently, but we need quality depth.

It seems that he separated his shoulder that he has had a problem with in the past. This time it is worse than previous times. Surgery is a possibility.
