Sox don't want to play for a rat like Pedroia!

or maybe they don't want to play for a manager that headhunts?

You can't seriously believe Farrell told Barnes to throw at Machado's head.

It's impossible to prove either way. Bottom line, he's not that good of a manager. He'll be the first to go if this team doesn't start playing like they should.

See my last post in the Barnes thread.

Severino was dealing last night. I told you the last game he pitched, he looked pretty amazing. He just allowed two homers out of his three hits through 8 innings. Yesterday, he was untouchable. He has ace stuff. Tops out at 100, easily sits 97. Slider that is absolutely devastating. Change that is at least league average. Command that is plus all around. He was dominant in 2015. He came back last year with high expectations and crumbled. By the end of the year, he was dominating again in a pen role. He regained his confidence. Now, he's rolling. If he stays healthy, I think he is on course for a big season. There is no fault in getting shut down by a guy with his stuff

No doubts Severino is the goods. But that doesn't mean our offense doesn't have issues. 78 runs in 20 games, 3.9 a game doesn't get it.

No doubt your offense is struggling. Looks like the loss of Papi has been a lot bigger than anyone was willing to admit to

I was afraid of it.

That's easy to say, except we got 6 regulars who OPS+ is around 60.

I still think our offense will end up in the top 5 in run scored by season's end.

With Papi, we'd probably be number 1 or 2.

HRam has yet to get it going, but if he doesn't, it could be a long season.

The money saved by trading Buch could eventually be used at the trade deadline to boost the offense, something few of us thought would even be up for discussion.

There were quite a few of us who truly felt that losing that big bat in the middle of the lineup would have a big impact on this year's team. i have seen the home run totals repeated over and over for everyone as well as the refrain "this team will, this team will hit". We shall see. The acquisition of Sale is huge for sure but not replacing the big bat is going to have some impact as well. At this point in time, it looks like a big impact.

Time for Papi to start taking BP

We don't need him! The offense will be fine without him! His big bat wouldn't protect anyone!

He didn't throw that ball. I also don't think Barnes was going for his head. The FB he threw at Machado was about 5 MPH lower than his normal speed. He probably just got nervous and didn't throw the pitch where he wanted.

Why wait until the deadline to make a move?

As bad as our offense has looked, right now we are tied for the last WC slot.

There are 7 teams at 11-9. That isn't saying much.

I'll bet that going up and in isn't something that he is even used to doing. I'm still upset that a pitcher as valuable as he has been is unavailable because he was trying to protect somebody who didn't want the protection.

Usually, that's when the best talent is available, but certainly we could do something beforehand, if the offer is right.

It says, it might not take greatness to make the playoffs- just be a little better than decent.

I think we'll end up much better than "decent", but we'll see.

Because of trading away prospects.

They could suffer an injury before, non -related with the problem you identify with the deadline.

You can't really tell a teams problem in May/June

It's called patching up one hole and watch another open.

The problem is, we expect Hanley to fill some of the voids left by David Ortiz. But, he is just not that kind of player. I don't know what to call this kind of player. But, when they come up to bat, you know there is a good chance he is going to come up clutch for the team. This team is missing it's core and you're not going to fill it with a bunch of complimentary players. The front office needed to suck it up and go above the luxury tax in the off-season. They should have signed Encarnación. That's the type of player that will fill the void.

Hanley definitely could fill that role. He hit 30/100 last season and is a career 127 OPS+

He is off to a slow start and said his shoulders is to blame.

Yes, those are the numbers that really show what a brutal start the offense has had.

He did have a great year last season. One that no one has seen out of him since his Marlins days. The problem is, the years previous have been good. But, not to the level of Ortiz. I just don't see the numbers to justify taking the leap of faith.

To put early season standings in perspective, they are only one game better than the Phillies.

I think you generally have an idea of what isn't working after Memorial Day. April 27th, is probably too soon for a trade though.

Honestly, I think Devers is a better option after the AS break than Rutledge or Marco Hernandez if Pablo isn't playing.

He doesn't need Ortiz's number if 5 of the other batters are producing at least 105 OPS+. What a horrendous start for this whole team.
