I thought that was common knowledge? Starters need 3 good pitches. Relievers need only 2.

Could be, but, if memory serves, Papelbon basically had 1 effective pitch--his fastball-- most of the time he was here. Last year Kimbrel still had 31 saves with an erratic knuckle curve but a very good fastball. And didn't Mariano Rivera excel with basically one pitch?

But your principal is still valid because starters normally face hitters at least twice and usually 3 or 4 times per game. So they probably need 3 pitches.

Mariano has the best pitch in the history of baseball. Hence, he only needed one pitch. Everyone else needs more than one

I don't think there will ever be another like Mariano. I still have nightmares about him.

Jasonbay44 you have grinded out a couple of wins for us. Keep up the good work!

Jasonbay44 mojo going strong!

It's really, really nice that we took 3 of 4.

And again today, Sox fielding costs the pitcher. Both runs unearned due to the Hernandez drop and it cost Wright 13 extra pitches.

This. Our starters the last 2 games would not look nearly as bad if not for some defensive miscues.

That said, Wright settled in nicely after the first inning.

Glad it's the time of year when a couple of good games can turn your stat line around in a hurry....Beni, Mookie, Xander, Hanley, and of course Mitch "David Who?" Moreland all batting over .300 at the moment.

LOL Good one.

lol. Sandy's curveball, Maddox slider, pedro change, express FB, randy FB, gooden curve, etc etc etc have something to say about this proclamation from the yankees troll on a red sox forum

Paplebon had a great fastball with a splitter and a slider that he had varying degrees of command and control over. Once he lost a tick on his fastball, his career went downhill fast.

If you have one dominant pitch, you still generally need another pitch or two that you can still throw once in a while.

Blyleven had an unbelievably good curveball. Also, Sutter's splitter and Valenzuela's screwball.

Camilio Pasqual for the Twins - ring a bell? probably not - one of the best curve balls I ever saw.

Barnes and Kimbrel have been pretty much lights out at the back end of the pen.

I'm really impressed with the progress Barnes has made over the last 2-3 years. There was a while there where he was pretty iffy.

What a huge boost to the pen he can be, if he keeps this up.

I always thought Kimbrel would be a top 5 closer for the 3 years with us. He's looking like that now.

Jacko is not a troll. He is a lot of things; he is a douchebag sometimes, a jerk, an ignoramus, a nuisance, an idiot, apparently a doctor, insufferable, opinionated, frequently arrogant, biased, probably short, almost certainly impotent, our friend, and on extremely rare occasions, intelligent and insightful. A troll, though? No way.

Jacko is a perfectly cromulent poster. He's not as insufferable as he used to be.

As the resident Defender Of Jacko I would note that most of those things he has in common with many people on this board.

If he was not a Yankee fan few people would care about all those things.

Yeah, I feel like we're finally seeing the Kimbrel we hoped we'd be getting...pure dominance.

Imagining how good this 'pen could be once we have Thornburg and eventually Smith back healthy is kind of scary.
