Pomeranz says he's fine now. Thanks for wasting our bullpen after giving us 3 innings.

With each outing, he's beginning to behave more and more like my third wife, totally high maintenance. If he has a good year, lets trade him and be done with it.

What could the Red Sox fetch in return for one year of Drew Pomeranz?

I would expect Betts to be Betts, and improvements from 3B, LF and possibly Bogaerts. Some regression from Leon, Pedrioa, and JBJ was probable. But again, we outscored the next closest AL team by over 100 runs, so even if our offense was expected to be 100 runs worse, it would still be one of the tops in the league.

I have no problem with the starting team that Dombrowski assembled for this year.

Betts had a .726 OPS on May 18, 2016. I seriously doubt we are seeing a regression from him this year. Of course, any player can have a down year, and when several have them at the same time, it's not pretty.

I did expect regression from Leon, but I expected progression from Vaz, and by replacing Hanigan and Holaday's PAs, I felt our overall catcher OPS would improve over 2016.

2016: .665 catcher OPS (.250 8 60)

This included:

.454 from Holaday in 34 PAs

.449 from Hanigan in 111 PAs

.584 from Vazquez in 181 PAs

To me, this more than off sets the "up year" by Leon (.840 in 271 PAs).

I think Leon can give us .680-.720 for over 350 PAs, and Vaz can give us .650-.690 for 300+ PAS. That should give us a better than .665 OPS from our catchers.

Another big improvement was supposed to come from LF (.759 in 2016) and maybe 3B (.686).

Pomeranz is pitching Friday night in Oakland. That's a perfect setup for him. If he doesn't pitch well Friday we'll know we're screwed. :P

Replacing Ortiz (79 runs & 127 RBI) with Morleand (49 Runs & 60 RBI) is a difference of 100 runs. Add in some regression from a few of the other players. You missed Hanley on your mentions of players likely to regress. 2016 was his first full season in 5 years. Add to all this the cascading effect of losing Ortiz. It was easy to see us falling off by more than 100 runs.

You can't simply add RBIs and runs scored to account for the difference between the two. Looking at wRC+ is probably a better comparison. Ortiz had 163 and Moreland had 105. I didn't miss Hanley in my list of players likely to regress. I don't think he was 'likely' to regress.

I very much disagree that it was easy to see us falling off by more than 100 runs. Yes, we were likely to fall off, but not by so much that we would not still be a top offensive team.

I realize that you just don't add the RBI's and Runs and take the difference. Even the number you put forth are almost 60 runs and I don't think that takes into account the dynamics of losing Ortiz and the cascading effects.

As for Hanley, he had his best year in a long time and it was his first full season in 5 years. He has 2 bad shoulders. Regression by him is fairly likely.

Price is pitching today, you will have all your answers soon. If he pitches good he might only need one tune-up. If he looks say not good , it will drag out until June.

This hours back to what myself and a few others were saying all off-season - sign more pitching dePth to miNor league deals. Dombrowski signed only Kyle Kendrick and didn't get any of the actual major league and like Jon Niese who were apparently willing to sign minor league deals. And while Niese and, say, Rubby De La Rosa certainly aren't saviors for any pitching staff, both are likely to keep their ERAs below 10 for brief stretches. ..

It seemed with the mighty 6 starters we had, not many borderline 5/6 slot starters saw much of a chance to break into the Sox rotation, so they chose places where they had a better chance to earn a starting slot.

This is the same type of thing that happened last year with our #4 and 5 starters, and our fill in starters, which led to the Pomeranz trade.

Sale had an 0.91 ERA in his first four starts. He has a 3.34 ERA in five starts since.

We're doomed.

He's sinking like a stone...trade him while he still has some value!

Wish the Sox signed Holland, guy is pitching lights out in Colorado. Saw him, high 90's 28K's to 6 walks. Something like 19saves. 0.96 Era. Guy was always a stud, had a year off, to recover, that was a good gamble. 7 million this year.

Sox are reeling. Need a winning streak.
