Our team looks really good as is. I think it would make more sense to wait until midseason to see what the team's needs are, if any. It doesn't seem worth it to pick up Bautista for what might amount to be little or no improvement, especially if it turns out that we didn't need him.

I would keep Swihart and lay of Bautista. There is time to look over things and wait to midseason to make adjustments.

Yeah, at this point, I'd be more interested in finding ways to strengthen the bench and options at AAA than going for a big signing. If Bautista was 3 years younger, I'd jump at him though.

Don't forget that signing Bautista would also cost our first-round draft pick. That's a big factor on top of the luxury tax concerns.

Still might happen though, who knows.

I meant on principle I think it's a tad silly. It's not the first time it's come up either. Yeah you're right though, the draft pick is important and because of that I'm still not sure I'd actually want to, but it's close. S5's got a point I tend to agree with, that you gotta start somewhere and sooner is better than later. There should also be bats available at this years deadline, in case we're set with our BP that is.

What we lose on defense at 1B vs any gain we may get by using Bautista at DH instead of basically a Moreland-Young platoon is not worth the money we pay and the loss of flexibility.

What if we sign JB and then we have a major injury at a position of limited depth? With no flex money, we'll end up going over the limit just to get a possible slight gain.

I want $6.5M Young playing vs LHPs at DH not riding the bench. I want HanRam at DH vs RHPs not at 1B full time. I don't want a $5.5M Moreland on the bench almost everyday. While I do t2hink JB is better than Moreland vs RHPs, I like Young better vs LHPs, and the loss at 1B defense makes it pretty close to even value to me.

I don't see JB as a big plus.

Agreed.

I would rather save what financial flexibility we have to address what might be a real need over the course of the season.

I hope we keep Swihart. I read this morning that our former GM Hazen has asked about trading for either Vazquez or Swihart. He knows these guys as well as anyone, and his interest in them makes me want to keep them even more. Thankfully, Dombrowski said that trading either of them was 'not likely'.

If the Sox were going to sign Bautista, I would have much rather just kept Buchholz and his $13.5 mil.

We don't know how serious ERod's knee injury is, but starting pitching depth is once again a very real concern for me.

It's funny how we can go from trying to figure out the roster ramifications of too many pitchers to having no quality rotation depth in the blink of an eye.

SP depth should always be a concern. I hope Owens can be a little more reliable this year.

Owens or Johnson.

It's about time one of these guys stepped up their game. Both had close to a 50-50 chance of becoming at least a decent #5 starter at some point in their career. That gave us a 75% chance that at least one could be "that guy".

We've seen squat so far. It's time to prove your worth guys!

(I'd like to see us sign a couple vets to minor league deals as added depth.

I agree. Not everyone does though.

I like Johnson better now too, but with emotional issues, there's always going to be a huge question mark over his head once the pressure rises.

Things start getting serious now with FA's that are not signed. By being patient you could get 2 Players for 1 year of Buchholz.

Plouffe and Fister?

I prefer Owens to Johnson, but it's somewhat similar to the same way I prefer influenza to pneumonia...

The Sox don't need Plouffe, and Fister is one of those guys more likely to try and get an MLB deal. He may not, but he probably won't settle for a MiLB deal until later this month...

I do think the Sox need to sign some of the mediocre and oft-injured guys o minor league deals. Guys I think might accept them include Dillon Gee, Kris Medlen, Vance Worley, Ross Detwiler, and Lucas Harrell.

Rubby De La Rosa is another guy who might, but will probably get real major league interest due to his age. Jorge De La Rosa would be an awesome get if he accepted one and returned to the Red Sox organization...

I'm pretty certain we'll end up signing one of these type pitchers for added depth.

yeah. who was Toronto negotiating against at that cost? he has some pretty doable incentives that could make this a 3 year deal. I had no interest going there. 1 year at say $10 would have been interesting...

did the RS jump on Moreland too soon?

Did the RS jump on Moreland too soon?

I don't think so. I think they set $5-6M as their limit and wanted someone that could allow HanRam to DH some.

I don't think they jumped too soon either. Moreland is worth what the Sox are paying him. When a team waits on someone in the hope they can sign him for less there's a real risk of someone else swooping in and picking him up. Moreland is a very good fit for this team so they struck while the iron was hot.

The only way this deal might not look so good in hindsight, might be if Trumbo or Napoli sign for dirt.

Or if he falls on his face at the plate.
