My suggestion of Moncada, Pomeranz (who they could flip), Swihart, Basabe and Owens would probably not have done the trick.

Probably not, but this would have been my best offer. If the White Sox want Moncada, they don't get Devers, Kopech, or Groome. They can have Pomeranz and Swihart instead. If that isn't good enough, call someone else.

Yeah, um...anyway.

The White Sox apparently pushed for Devers as the third piece, but the Red Sox compromised by giving them Basabe and Diaz instead. That almost makes me like this deal even more...well done, Dave.

I suspect the Red Sox did not open the negotiations by offering Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech.

It almost certainly was a process.

or add Basabe and/or Travis

In case I missed it what will the rotation look like then this year?

Sale

Porcello

Price

Wright

Eduardo Rodriguez

That would be my guess. But our top 3 are pretty much all ace quality so that is really nice since each of them has won a Cy Young or been in the top 5 running for a Cy. Any one of them could take the #1 spot.

Just a guess. They needed Kopech in the deal . The reason this is just me thinking. They didn't want anything coming off the roster like pitching( Pomeranz, Erod) so Kopech was the one. They didn't part with any of the OF's or XB. Your not getting Sale for Swihart's who's a mystery and hurt all of most of last year. Not his fault. But he was injured. Pomeranz you just can't throw in there after you gave up your number one PP. If that was the case they could have or tried the old return back 2 the Padres. ( medical reports) The CHW want control over the young players. They are in rebuild. As the case with the Eaton trade. I'm not an expert with the prospects other members on here know way more than me. Of course if they wanted Pomeranz in the deal they would have done it taking Kopech out. Just offering a thought.

Just read over an old Ben Buchanan article just before the Sale trade on how much acquiring Sale would increase our already good odds at winning the WS:

Assuming they only give up Eduardo Rodriguez off the major league roster (a huge assumption) to go with the likes of Moncada and Kopech and presumably some other prospects, I don’t think their odds are actually all that much better.

Looks like he thought we'd have to give up much more than we did.

Here's what he said after the trade:

Here’s your Dave Dombrowski blockbuster... giving up no major league talent in the process. Obviously Yoan Moncada is a huge loss. Obviously Michael Kopech has excellent upside. Those other two prospects could be huge.

There’s also a lot to wonder about just how much better Chris Sale actually makes this team. He’s an exceptional pitcher, and will be Boston’s for the next three years (at a fairly reasonable price), but they were already a good team with a good rotation. That being said, if the Red Sox were going to go all-in on 2017, they have at least done a good job of that...

The Sale trade somewhat reminds me of what DD did in Detroit in 2014 when he added Price at the deadline in that he took a very good pitching staff and improved it. Let's hope this one turns out better than that one did.

Good but now great. That is the key word left out of that article

Well, Sale is under control for a much longer term than Price was at that point. DD was also able to spin Price for Daniel Norris at the following deadline.

Not having to part with ERod, JBJ or Devers was huge.

If you told me we could get Sale for Moncada, Kopech and Swihart, I might have said okay as well.

I wouldn't have been upset if ERod was included TBH.

I would have understood - but I am very bullish on him ... we complain about not having young stud sort of starting pitching, he is tracking very nicely in that direction.

I think he's idling, but that's just me. I hope the reason he didn't make a big leap last year was just due to the injury.

Last 14 games E-Rod started he held opponents to a .210 BA, and had a 3.24 era.

Couldn't get through the 6th in 8 of those starts.

Well, if Sale, Price and Porcello can go 7 every time, we can absorb two 5 inning guys.

ERod has to show he can do it for 170+ innings.

There was talk of him tipping his pitches, so if that was part of his 2016 issues, he should be able to fix that easy enough.

He's got enormous upside, but so have a lot of pitchers who never amounted to squat.

I have a lot of faith that this will be his year.

I have him as my number 4 with Wright, Pom and Buch below him (in that order).

Spring training may change that order.

It's a really interesting question which of Pomeranz, Wright and E-Rod you want in your starting 5 right now. MHO is, Wright and E-Rod. If not for their own vitrues, because Pomeranz has more experience as a highly effective reliever/swingman.

It's pretty close.

I agree on Pom in the pen due to experience there, but I also think Wright and ERod have slightly better starter profiles.

I'd put ERod in the 4 slot right now, but ST'ing can change things.

Interesting comp on Wright & Pom.

1st Half 2016:

ERA -

61 Wright (3rd best in MLB)

62 Pomerabz (5th in MLB)

WHIP

1.06 Pomeranz (13th)

1.21 Wright (36th)

WAR

2.5 Pomeranz (14th in MLB)

2.1 Wright (24th in MLB)

W-L

10-5 Wright

8-7 Pomeranz

Something else interesting: out of the top 25 leaders in Wins for the first half or 2016, 5 current Sox pitchers placed.

1) Sale 14-3

7) Porcello 11-2

10) Wright 10-5

15) Price 9-6

25) Pomeranz 8-7

52 wins.

I have no idea what to think of Wright. I guess the only thing we found out is he will most likely be less effective as the weather warms up due to humidity and moisture.

I'm asking...... do you all think he can pull off again what he did in the earlier part of the year last year?

And isn't Pomeranz supposedly the better of the three? We got too see him a bit worn out and he didn't look like a person who should have been on the all star team, but I'd guess he would be projected to be better than E-Rod and Wright...........

Does anyone know how Wrights shoulder has been so far this offseason? I havent read anything on him. Last i knew he was still having shoulder issues at the end of the season. I wouldnt pencil him in just yet. That shoulder lingered a while. He may still have some issues. Unless of course I missed something, which wouldnt be out of the ordinary:D
