Was sad to see Torey go but excited at the prospect of Tek taking his place. Well a day or so later and reports from Boston are Varitek won't be the guy:

Lovullo left his job as Red Sox bench coach last week to become manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, at which point many Boston fans wondered whether the organization would consider Varitek as a replacement. Varitek, who’s currently a special assistant to Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, apparently is happy in his current position, though, so expect the club to look elsewhere — whether internally or externally — in its quest to find Lovullo’s successor.

Hard to blame Tek when he does have such an easy-going role. He works with catchers in the Spring and then assists as needed during the season. Pedro serves the same role with pitchers but you wouldn't know it given how much time on television he has.

Would expect Ruben and Butterfield to get consideration. Another internal option would be Dana LeVangie.

Everyone seems to think Tek would be an obvious choice of a manager some day.

All along I have thought that he is just not interested in being a manager. Good for him. I respect that if it is true.

I'm happy that he spends some time with catchers and particular young players.

Tek was a terrible captain who let the clubhouse turn into an absolute disaster in 2011 and spent more time chasing reporter tail than keeping his fellow players in line.

I think if Tek moves in any coaching direction, it would be towards being a pitching coach, similar to another former catcher named Dave Duncan

He sure did his homework on opposing hitters though.

Fantastic signing, he works real good with kids. Was the Manager for PawSox in 2013 and won division title. From 07-09 was Manager with Lowell, won 2 Titles in 08 and 09. Once voted Minor League Manager of the Year in 13. Never had a losing record as a Manager in the Minors. This is one of the best moves the Sox could make. Local, and has a bright Baseball mind.

Real glad he's back.

Deporting Pablo would definitely help clear cap space though...

More than one space? (sorry - told myself that I wouldn't do that anymore)

I support the idea of Brian Butterfield being the bench coach, because it would mean Brian Butterfield would no longer be the third-base coach. I bet even Dale Sveum says "Man, that Butterfield sends way too many guys to the plate."

the third base coach is always going to be one of the more unpopular coaches. The most common nicknames for a third base coach are "Windmill" and "Redlight" depending on whether fans have decided he's way too cautious (costing runs) or way too aggressive (costing outs). No one is perfect enough as a 3B coach to avoid the ire of fans indefinitely.

Third base coach is always the least popular guy on the team. Butterfield, Sveum, Kim, etc...

He's older and hopefully a bit more wise now... Don't think that will be much of an issue for him. I think he can motivate the team and do good things.

In Butterfield's case, if the players can be believed, he seems to be about as good as there is with respect to teaching all things infield related.

Really like this move...maybe setting the next guy up now. Hes had success at every level so far and after a year or two as a MLB bench coach he will be a successful MLB Manager as well. Great baseball mind IMO from what Ive seen and heard.

Its a young team and he works well, like TL did, with the young guys. Hopefully his voice will make a difference if some in game moves are considered r not...good move.
