The New York Yankees have announced that Alex Rodriguez will play his final game Friday, then assume a position as a special adviser and instructor with the team.

Following Friday's game, Rodriguez will be unconditionally released by the Yankees from his player contract in order to sign a contract to serve as a special adviser and instructor with the Yankees through Dec. 31, 2017.

Love him or hate him, Alex Rodriguez will be missed

Alex Rodriguez has always been a man of contrast and controversy, success and excess, but one thing is indisputable: He won't ever be forgotten.

Once on track to surpass major milestones, Alex Rodriguez ran out of gas

Before the scandal and 2016 swoon, Alex Rodriguez was on track to be one of the best players in baseball history. But he leaves the game short of the milestones he was once destined to achieve.

Alex Rodriguez's legacy will always be complicated

With everything that has happened over his career, Alex Rodriguez will never be remembered simply as one of baseball's best players.

"This is a tough day. I love this game and I love this team,'' Rodriguez said, often choking up during Sunday's news conference. "And today I'm saying goodbye.''

According to Fox Sports, Rodriguez was told by the Yankees they wanted to release him

I think this is something both Yankees and Red Sox fans can celebrate together

I was hoping he'd keep playing. That way, we'd be sure the Yanks would continue to suck.

On a more serious note, I was almost certain ARod would pass Aaron for 3rd place on the career HR list. (He's 18 behind now.)

Speaking of the HR list:

Pujols is 2 behind 10th place McGwire, 5 behind Frank Robinson and 28 behind Sosa. He;s 31 behind 7th place Jim Thome. Griffey is 18 more away.

Papi is 6 behind Jimmie Foxx at #18. He's 8 behind Mantle at #17.

ARod is 3rd in career RBIs with 2084 (130 behind Ruth).

He's 8th in runs scored (41 behind Mays), 6th in TB (43 behind Cobb) and .0004 ahead of Papi in career SLG% 25th and 26th place alltime.

Yankees were about to have to pay him another 5MM when he hit #700. They cut him off at the knees before that happened....

Yup. Cheapskates.

So do they still owe him for the remainder of his contract? Although he's not officially retiring, since he is accepting an "advisor" position rather than trying to continue his playing career somewhere, I would think not (similar to how we didn't pay Dempster after he decided not to play in 2014)...but I've read other sources saying the Yanks still owe him the rest of the money.

not a chance Arod walks away from 1 penny of that contract. it's who he is. i bet he even negotiated more for the cash he is leaving on the table for not reaching the $5MM bonus marks of 700, 715, 756, 763 (although he would never have reached the last 2, the first 2 were certainly within reach).

Would you blame him? I don't like guaranteed contracts but if the Yankees were this stupid handing out the money, of course he's going to want every penny. I would too.

nope i dont blame him at all. and i dont blame the yankees from pulling the plug before he gets that $5MM bonus @ 700. both are smart business moves.

That was probably the agreement: "We have no choice but to pay you, but we don't have to play you. Quit now and we'll give you a no-show title and the rest of your contract. Forget about the HR bonus."

Sounds right.

Canseco was telling the truth, but if he was only doing it to make a buck, he ain't much of a hero either.

But will A-Roid land on another team this year? He is free to do so, isn't he?

There are grumblings about Miami signing him. They have no DH there but he could hit a few dingers in September. Or so it is said.

That's not true at all.

His next bonus would have been for passing Ruth, not 700.

At his current HR pace that may have taken him 2 seasons!

I don't think he's free, the Yankees are keeping him as an 'advisor'.

Incorrect.

The bonuses are $6MM each and nothing for 700.

As I said, next bonus would be for passing Ruth.
