In case anyone didn't read about it, Doug Griffin passed away at the age of 69. He was one of my favorite players as a kid because he played second base when I started playing baseball and I was a second baseman.

He was a highly touted prospect when he came up with the Red Sox. He was a slick fielder. My recollection is that his offensive game never developed due to a horrific beaning by Nolan Ryan. RIP Dude Griffin.

I was a big fan! That beaning essentially ended what looked to be a very good career on the rise. Doug Griffin was a damned good player.

Mike Andrews was the second baseman when I started to follow the Sox.

Griffin was next, I think. He was skinny as a rail.

Sorry he croaked.

'Sorry he croaked' - good way to put it.

I remember Doug Griffin fondly from my earliest days as a Red Sox fan. Sad to see him die so young. I'm pushing 60 and I'd like to think I'll live long enough to see a few more Sox championships.

He probably played at around 155 lbs -- maybe a little more if he was taller than I remember. A lot of Middle Infielders weighed 150-160 lbs back then. Today the ballboys weigh over 200 lbs.

I really wish that it didn't seem like just yesterday but it does. Pete Runnels followed by Chuck Schilling (all glove - no bat) were the first two second baseman whose careers i followed. Next came just a small dose of Reggie Smith and of course Mike Andrews. Griffin was poised to become the next very good one. On my earliest strato game, I scratched out Schilling's name and plugged my own in.

I always thought it was interesting that the Sox had three consecutive starting second baseman back in the 1970s that they acquired from the Angels:

Griffin with Ken Tatum and Jarvis Tatum for Tony C., Ray Jarvis and Jerry Moses.

Denny Doyle for PTBNL (Chuck Ross) and cash.

Jerry Remy for Don Aase and cash.

Is this sort of leading up to the acquisition of Mike Trout? We can dream.

First Trout has to move to second base. LOL!

For sure! I always knew that second base was really the place to be.

I remember playing with Doug from our Little League days in El Monte, CA. He was a great teammate. RIP, Doug.

Now that is a good memory.
