Boggs is okay. The Red Sox didn't want him when he still had 6 years left in him. The owners messed up in letting an all time great walk for chump change.

The pool had been wired to discourage two pet Rottweilers from jumping in, the Daily News has learned. But 14-year-old Victor Dario Avila did not know that when he jumped in to cool off Saturday. His father, Victor Sr., 35, was killed when he leaped in to try to save his son, police said. "They didn't know the pool was wired," an investigator told The News. "The boy jumps in, and when his father saw him being electrocuted, he also jumps in.

This is pretty much how I feel. Not every Red Sox player who goes to the Yankees is automatically a horrible traitor. Sometimes the Sox screw the pooch and leave them no choice.

damon and Ellsbury = could have stayed but left to go to NYY for more money = traitors who tarnished their reputation

Boggs = guy the FO decided not to keep = left to NYY simply because they were the ones who were willing to make an offer = just FA doing FA things

I actually feel similar about Rajah Clemens, and would say the same thing if Jon Lester somehow wound up on NYY. Our FO moved on from the guy, who turned out to have some life left in him. If a guy walks when we wanted him and would have compensated him appropriately (not a lowball offer like with Lester), that's one thing, but if we close the door in a guy's face, we have no more claim on him.

I thought his "explanation" of that last night was interesting. For those who didn't hear it, Boggs said he had an agreement with Jean Yawkey on a new multiyear contract, but she died and the new owners (Harrington, etc) kiboshed the offer, so he moved on.

If true, it was one of many things Harrington did to screw up the Sox in his initial years at the helm.

As for the ring, who cares. Maybe he could have left it home but if he wears it all the time, or wears it all the time to baseball related functions, I have no issue. 99.9% of the people didn't notice, just some media types looking to stir up trouble.

How much did we offer Ellsbury?

How do you feel that Big Papi can wave 3 rings from this century in front of your nose when no Yankee has more than 1?

Good for Papi.

Also good that baseball wasn't invented at the beginning of this century.

We know that Boggs is an extreme OCD case. He probably never takes off the ring, and it is also a safe bet that he ate chicken yesterday.

Would not have mattered. He was always going to go to the highest bidder, and whatever the Sox would have offered, the Yankees would have offered $1 more.

Damon made a big deal out of saying he'd never go to NY; I don't think Ellsbury made any such statement or even hinted at it.

Everything else was in a prior millenium, but then again, Yankee fans have to live in the past, because the heyday of their dominance is a distant memory.

I don't think the Sox made any serious attempt to re-sign Ellsbury.

And then next year they sign another generation of aging has-been PED abusers and proclaim the pinstripes to be in the ascendency again.

At least I was alive to see one of their many "heyday of dominance".

Were you alive in the early part of the last century when the Sawx had their only heyday of dominance?

You're not correct there. I don't remember the details, but I do remember that a serious effort was made, and that Ellsbury let it be known he was not interested in making a deal that would accomodate the Sox' budget in any way.

you mean other than 04-09 when they won twice and challenged seriously several more times?

It was a reference to relatives of Mariano Rivera being electrocuted in Mariano's pool. Not really relevant to this discussion.

I'd like to see the story.

Ummm, that was not a heyday of dominance.

Dominant teams don't miss the playoffs and also should be able to put together some back to back championships.

Nice try though.

I think the Sox let Ellsbury walk and I think they were absolutely right to do so, and I think most Sox fans feel the same way.

No but our 3 World Championships this century are still vivid memories. I have lots of nice photos that I took at game 6 in 2013. Were you at any of those last millenial championship clinching games and if so, were your photos in B&W?

Maybe not, but I still don't think it would have mattered. The Sox never would have or could have come close to the offer in NY (a contract will only get worse valuewise for the Yankees over the coming years).

And his agent was/is Boras, which almost always means the client is going to the highest bidder.
