I don't think that any of us want to give up on this guy. It just remains something that no one has said anything about at all. Unless he is hurting, you have to wonder why he hasn't even appeared since the call up. I might be going out on a limb but I still see him as the next best option after Leon.

i would not read much into it - season has gotten crucial, so the guys who were here are getting first dibs. But I expect he will continue to get more in the next week and change as our place gets cemented.

glad to see him out there last night. Looks like he knows what he is doing to me.

his tools are amazing - really comes down to two things:

1. Can he hit? The threshhold is low, but it is not zero either.

2. Do pitchers want to pitch to him? Other catchers have gotten better performance. There are a lot of factors, and I do not blame Vasquez 100%, but there is correlation and so that should at least be explored.

I believe he will hit. Just personal opinion. He wont win any batting titles but I can see a line of 260 330 400. The BA will get better with regular ABs as a starter, but i can see around 260. Pitchers have all said how good he is and how much they enjoy throwing to him, so Thats not really even a question.

I just think he needed more rehab. When he came back his accuracy on throws was way off. His offense was going to have to catch up to the D, which wasnt even 100% yet. Sending him to AAA was probably the best thing for his rehab and development. They are using the guys that got them there and will use Vaz as needed the rest of the way.

Next year is a different story. Personally, I want to see him win the starting job in ST.

I found this rather interesting:

Catcher framing runs, per @baseballpro:

* Christian Vazquez, plus 5.4 in about 3,000 chances

* Sandy Leon, minus 3.2 in about 3,500 chances

Stat corner more or less agrees with these stats. Leon's pitch framing has been below average this season.

I still see Vazquez as an elite defender. I think his less than elite performance defensively this year has a lot to do with his injury and subsequent year off.

I believe that Vazquez will be catching ERod tomorrow.

Would LOVE to see this, and also see him get a couple hits. Maybe more playing time as a result. Hes a firey kid and I have to believe hes just itching to get in there and show them hes ready and 100%. Leons bat has been all but non existant (3-31 last 2 weeks) and Vaz is still the better defender. Vaz needs to take advantage of any playing time he gets.

Kimmi, I hear you and certainly respect your research and opinion. But I remain a doubter for the simple reason that in 2014 with Vazquez the pitching stunk and this year without him it has gotten steadily better. In other words I think framing pitches is overrated. I would also point out that we were assured he had a great throw to 2B, but the fact is that Sandy nails a higher percentage of baserunners.

I am high on Vazquez, as you are. This is not a knock on Leon, whom I think is awesome.

I just looked at the numbers for this year and am pretty sure I'm right.

That is like a dagger through my heart.

I'm not trying to knock Leon in any way. I love the dude. I think he's a great defensive catcher whose framing numbers aren't reflecting that this season. Either way, I've always touted Leon's defense, which goes well beyond pitch framing.

I would be very happy with a Leon/Vazquez tandem next season.

his pitch framing is excellent - i don't knock the defense. But Leon has defended fine - although the pitch framing has lagged. And the pitchers have pitched a lot better - which I would never solely attribute to the change behind the plate, but it is a thing that is true. The actual game calling part of it might be lagging comparatively.

I'm reading 0 into it. I was just happy to see him out there. Personally I would prefer him to both Hanigan and Holiday any day. I do no see their offensive talents jettisoning them ahead of him on the depth chart.

Nice response. Moreover, I agree. I'm tired of Holoday and Hanigan.

I believe that the stated statistical difference is insignificant.

Maybe you should look at the FULL body of work and not just a year where Vaz wasnt 100% back from TJS. Seriously? Thats what your basing your arguement on? This years stats for Vaz? Wow....talk about cherry picking to make an arguement.

The bottom line is I woild be perfectly happy with a Vaz/Leon tandum behind the plate. Whan talking about a 2% CAREER difference in CS, its hard to say either one is really better. They are both solid defensive catchers. Vaz is better, but not by much.

I am very happy with the job that Leon has done.

I also think Bannister gets a lot of credit.

Vaz looking solid so far today. Struck out 1st AB but made him throw 10 pitches. Work the count really good. Smokes a line drive double down the LF line his 2nd AB. Looks good on D so far. Getting a couple call strikes with good framing through four innings...I sure hope Farrell wakes up and starts playing him more. Especially if his bat is going to be productive when Leon has like three hits his last 30 something ABs.

This is also not a knock on Leon. I really like him, and I want a Vaz/Leon Tandum if possible. I just want Vaz as the main guy.

Agree Vazquez had a good game today, which is good for the team as a whole. As I said earlier, I prefer Leon/Vazquez over Hanigan, Holaday, SWihart, whoever.

He gets a big hand for the job he did today. I'll bet the pitchers love him. Leon is tiring. Run Vazquez out there for at least the next 2 or 3 games.

They had holaday come in for Leon instead of Vaz, im guessing Farrell wants to see him and Vaz before he makes the decision who the PO catchers are. Vaz should win that one out IMO. He has looked better than Holaday in his limited action.

I couldn't believe Vaz wasn't in there last night after Leon got PH for.

I have to believe after the great night Vaz had the other day he needs to see Holiday too so he can make a choice for the PO roster ....Vaz vs Holaday...

Obviously my choice is for Vaz.

I think that Farrell could put the names of the catchers (excluding Hanigan) into a hat and pull them out one at a time. Play them in the order that they came out of the hat and it wouldn't make any difference. You could go so far as to change the names on their jerseys and it still wouldn't make any difference.

Leon seems to have done a great job with the pitching staff since coming aboard. He's still my starter through the end of the season.

Agree. I've always been a big fan of Christian Vazquez but this isn't a horse I'm willing to change in the middle of the stream.

I hope this year was just an adjustment for him after coming off surgery. I'm a fan of Vaz and hope he can win the starting job next year.

i think that in this case that is the way you have to look at it. What have you done for me lately? Leon gets the job but does it really make a difference?

You'd have to ask the pitching staff that one.
