Ogando was a terrible signing. The strategy was good, because no reliever can be expected to be as bad as he has been.

Can anyone think of one good reason why Ogando has not been released. Does it serve any purpose having him in our bullpen except as a reminder of the failure of this team's season? Is he the best bullpen spoon player? Maybe he is the conductor? Seriously, ship his ass home. Is there a stat that shows that he should be regressing to some mean.

@PeteAbe: Xander Bogaerts so smooth starting that double play. His defense this season, amazing how much he improved. Hard work pays.

 

What has amazed me all year about Xander is that every play at short I have seen he has done it better and more smooth than I thought he could do it. All year I keep waiting for him to boot it or throw it away and I just haven't seen it. I'm sure there were a few or many, it's just I haven't seen it.

 

Someone did mention he doesn't have much range......... can someone stat me on that???????

 

He still isn't as good in the field as Pedey......

He's really not much better or worse than most of the pigs in the pen.

Don't believe the people who question his lack of range. Just talk. They have no clue. He has had more chances than almost every shortstop in the game. Everything indicates that he is not just good at fielding his position.

This is another statement whic is true only in hindsight. The strategy was good because that's how you build bullpens. You have a good closer and a good set up guy, then bring in a bunch of other relievers and see what sticks. The problem for the Sox this year is that no one stuck. Which is another enigma.

FWIW, I have been very impressed with Xander's defense this season. Both his UZR/150 and his DRS say that he is above average overall defensively. Fangraphs still has his range about 3 runs below average though. That said, you can't put too much stock into one season's defensive numbers. We'll have to see how this trends over the next couple of seasons.

Come on Kimmi - What is a UzR - is like his machine gun or something? And I don't care what his DRS say about him. That is between him and his docs. I would have inserted one of those little smiley faces but I don't know how.

I am glad that UZR and DRS agree with my assessment of XBs fielding. Otherwise, I would have to question the validity of those metrics, because I have watched almost every inning of every Red Sox game and part or all of about 100 other games.
