Not sure the type, but it is in its early stages and is apparently very treatable. He will be replaced by Torey Lovullo for the rest of the year. His chemo starts Tuesday. Godspeed John

I hate it when real life intersects with my escape mechanisms. Praying John overcomes this and enjoys future success. Sounds like a real miracle that his hernia led to it being discovered early enough- that's great!

On the last point, my mother in law was diagnosed as needing a triple bypass only because of tests done for something else.

Great to see guys like Tito and Lester speak their support for him. The gesture by Ortiz and Pedey during the press conference was a class act as well.

I wrote elsewhere questioning his performance. Obviously, this is a separate issue. For Pedroia and Ortiz in particular, who have a longer relationship with him, this must have hit hard. Farrell clearly is very lucky to have caught it quickly (and by accident).

Well, that is really only because Tito is in town. I'm sure he would still call him before and after or something like that if he weren't here, but he wouldn't leave his team if they weren't in Boston.

IMO, it doesn't matter. This is not something Francona had to do. It's a terrific gesture of their friendship either way.

A lot of what has worked for Francona as a leader is that he is a good guy. Obviously not the entirety of what has made him among the very top of the list of managers, but a significant factor.
