Anyone want to buy low on Puig? He was an all-star just 2 years ago. And despite his dip in numbers, still owns an .850 career ops.

If we can buy Puig on the cheap and he bounces back, then that would allow us to deal a surplus outfielder, whether that's JBJ or Castillo.

Or even if we don't deal any of our outfielders, Puig's bat - if refreshed, could fit well in our DH slot with big papi retiring.

One of his ex Dodger teammates called Puig the worst person in baseball.

Cubs To Sign Jason Heyward

By Steve Adams | December 11, 2015 at 12:12pm CST

Jason Heyward has chosen to sign with the Cubs, multiple sources tell Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times (Twitter link). Exact financial terms aren’t known, but Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that the Cubs landed Heyward for less than $200MM despite the fact that the Nationals are said to have offered around, or exactly $200MM.

Not that it's breaking news but Cueto seems to be enamored with joining the Sox or so he's said multiple times. If he could be had for the 6yrs, $120 million he turned down from AZ, would you pull the trigger?

$20 million a season is pretty much the going rate for a starter these days and Cueto would easily slot in as our #2 behind Price. Have to think that would put our rotation in a really good spot with Buch, Kelly, & ERod bringing up the back end and Johnson/Owens available as depth from AAA. Money would seem to be the issue but they've spent more for less many times over.

The 2017 free agent market is headlined by Strasburg, Andrew Cashner... and that's pretty much it. Maybe its better to stock up on pitching now?

“We thought we might be able to piece something together with the Red Sox,” said a Marlins official. “With ERod (Eduardo Rodriguez), Mookie Betts, Christian Vazquez, Yoan Moncada and another pitcher I thought we had something that might work.”

Tell you what, we're feeling generous and we'll let you pick between Owens/Johnson/Espinoza. Add any of those guys... Make that any two of those guys, and we'll give you Fernandez.

I tend to agree. Just seems like Henry and Co. made a big exception to the rule on big contracts to 30+ yr old pitchers with the Price signing (Cueto will be 30 in Feb) and I can't imagine them doing it again for Cueto. But with DD at the helm, old thoughts and feelings seem to have gone out the window. Lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to make something like that happen.

I saw an ESPN video of Shilling and that small guy with the big nose and a third guy who I don't know. They all agreed that the Sox have won the off-season.

But I am not comforted by this. I like all the moves that Dombrowski has made even with the big contract to Price ( I hate big contracts ).

Once again the Sox have so many question marks for my comfort. I think that the team is better off than one year ago but I am not confident that they will be much over .500 unless a bunch of things fall into place.

Based on what I've been reading about his clubhouse presence, no thanks. He apparently is an awful teammate.

The Allure of the Cubs is stronger than ever. Players are leaving money on the table to play for the Cubs.

They will be a lot of pundits' preseason pick to win it all next year.

It would be a tempting move for the short term, no doubt. That said, I don't think that having 2 long term contracts to aging pitchers is a good idea. I think the Sox can cover Price's contract well enough should things go terribly wrong, but they should not push their luck with two.

Theo is getting rave reviews, that's for sure. That said, we all know that the games still have to be played on the field.

If the Red Sox don't win it all this year, I hope it is the Cubs.

Dombrowski was right in turning his attention to free agency for a starting pitcher. The other GMs have apparently all gone mad. Props to Dombrowski for getting us our ace without selling the farm.

Yeah it would make me a bit nervous as well. I was just curious considering that when FA started the idea of getting Cueto for 6/120 would've been laughable. Now it seems that's about all it would take for the Sox to grab him. And compared to the rest of the contracts being doled out, it's not horrendous. Either that, or a shorter term deal, say 4/95 would be great. Not having to give up our draft pick would be nice as well.

LOL... just looked at my original post and realized I completely forgot Porcello in the mix. Have a tendency to do that a lot with him. That said, a Cueto signing would let us move Kelly to the pen as long relief/spot start/flamethrower when needed. Makes us more complete from a pitching depth standpoint. All depends on the money though. I can see Cueto waiting it out and losing dough to sign late in FA/spring training.

Would not mind a rotation of Price, Cueto, Porcello, ERod, & Buch. That would be legit against any other rotation IMO.

If Cueto would sign here and leave money on the table to not sign with the Dodgers that would surprise me. The Dodgers are in panic mode now that Greinke went to AZ and Cueto is projected the third best FA pitcher and is available so the Dodgers will have to go all in on him. Also the Yankees and Nats are probably real contenders to land him.

I'd rather John Henry throw money at Cueto this year with an opt out and have a back loaded contract with an elbow and shoulder clause, hell give him full no trade if he throws in the injury clause like Lackey signed here. 6/140 would get him. Bucholtz will probably come off the books next year unless he pitches like the healthy Buch so if DD can conveince Henry to spend I think we have made a complete 180.

Ditto big time.

Plus I see him as one of the Cuban players that has not yet perfected some essential game skills. Athletic, yes. Undisciplined and possibly dumb.

I think Theo better win soon or his team may become the next Dodgers.

How'd winning the offseason work out for the Jays/Marlins/Nats? All missed the playoffs the next season.

Theo has followed his plan out in rebuilding the Cubs. He purged the roster, rebuilt the farm system and spent the money when the team showed its ready for contention. It is on the players and coaches now. Cubs fans should be thrilled at the direction of that ball club.

You're right, 6/120 would not be a horrendous contract, and 4/95 would be even better. I would not be opposed to having Cueto in the rotation, I just worry about the long term ramifications. It will be interesting to see how much Cueto signs for.

I would love for the Sox to add a #2/3 starter.

I really wish both Theo and Ben had the autonomy while they were here that Theo has in Chicago and that Dombrowski now has here. Ben is not quite at Theo's level, but you can see how successful Theo is when given the autonomy to follow his vision. Theo/Ben rebuilt the Sox too. It's just that neither one of them will be here to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Mark Appel was added to the Ken Giles trade. The Kimbrel deal seems much more palatable in comparison and the Carson Smith deal feels like a steal in comparison.

Spud, his team is LOADED with talented players in both the bigs and the minors. And even though Heyward is a long term deal, there is almost no chance he doesn't opt out in 3 seasons, so in effect, it is a 3 yr deal. The only real long term commitment is Lester
