You drive me crazy sometimes, you know that? I'm going to take a a700hitter break for the rest of the offseason before I go loony -- I'll take you off ignore in April.

Welcome to the club.

It means no such thing. The problem with the Porcello extension is that there was no rush to sign him before seeing him pitch for the Red Sox. We got no discount by extending him while he was under contract. The Samardzija contract proves that fact. Ben would not have had to pay more for Porcello on the open market, even if he had pitched to expectations. Certainly, after his miserable 2015, he would not have commanded the contract that he received. The extension only would have made sense if it came with a discount. $21.5 million per year was not a discount. Porcello was not going to become an ace overnight and command $25-30 million per year. Ben overpaid in hindsight, and without hindsight, under a best case projection, he paid full retail a full year before he had to make the decision. It was a very poor decision no matter how you slice it.

I agree. The Sox acted way to quickly.

Cleveland looking for hitters. Lets go!

Teams are interested in some of Boston's starters - (forever potential) Buchholz - Kelly - Miley-- Hope they hang on to Miley. The other 2 might help to bring us that other starting pitcher that we need or help to strengthen the bullpen.

None of us know if the extension was worth it until he actually pitches the seasons the extension covers.

Maybe it's because I'm a bean-counter for a living, but I look at it differently. The extension was signed before Porcello had thrown a pitch for us, and before he threw a pitch he was on the books for 5 years and 95 million. That's the way I look at his contract. He had a bad first year but he can turn it around pretty quickly.

I'm fairly optimistic about Porcello. Of course, the offseason lends itself to optimism bias.

I was optimistic last season too about Porcello , and it cost me in a bet to iortiz (that I am still trying to figure out how to pay). Though I was optimistic, I still thought they rushed to overpay him.

We don't know whether any of the contracts that players sign are going to be worth it or not until they actually begin and then it is still open to opinion. The Price and Kimbrel deals could wind up looking good down the road as could Porcello's, Ramirez's, and Sandoval's. You have to roll the dice. I hope our dice are still rolling.

You raise a very good point. In today's game, you can't stand pat and wait for players to develop especially when your own farm system has been years away from producing effective pitchers both starters and relievers.

8:11am: Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets that the Marlins asked the Dodgers for both Julio Urias and Corey Seager in exchange for Fernandez, illustrating the fact that the Marlins aren’t shopping him but only looking to move him if they can receive an overwhelming return. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports asked one rival exec what he thought the Dodgers would need to part with in order to acquire Fernandez, and the exec said Urias, Seager and Scott Van Slyke — an even more sizable haul.
It would be great if DD could snag this guy.

That is a pretty intimidating back end of the pen.
9:27am: The Dodgers have struck a deal to acquire one of the game’s most elite bullpen arms, Aroldis Chapman, from the Reds in exchange for a pair of prospects, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Rosenthal adds that the Dodgers’ plan is to keep both Chapman and Kenley Jansen, who instantly team to become one of the game’s most dominant late-inning duos (if not the most dominant late-inning duo). The trade is pending medical reviews.

Sounds like Chapman won't cost the Dodgers any top prospects. Blah.

It is an "overpay" considering he is only got a year left before he is a free agent.

12:36pm: Lowe’s contract will guarantee him a hefty $13MM — $6.5MM per year — over the life of the contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). That’s quite a raise for a player who inked a minor league pact last offseason
That's a pretty reasonable contract.

Latest buzz from Frodo is Seattle and Boston are moving towards a deal for Miley. No speculation on the return

I like Miley but am thinking that the Sox feel that they can replace what he gives through Owens or a combination of Owens plus others. If Johnson is healthy, he will be interesting to watch. Even though it looks as though we know what we got in Miley - good consistent innings eater and not a bad pitcher overall as well, I still think that the potential that buchholtz, and Kelly have are intriguing to the Sox.
