We need a veteran presence at the top of the rotation who can pitch just a little. In a perfect world said pitcher would be under 30 and signed for a long time. The world isn't perfect the Red Sox have the money and the prospects to make any deal that they want to make. They have proven over and over by their actions that money is not a major factor. They talk fiscal responsibility and that's it.

Lester hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in the NL.
It seems that whenever he is separated from his binky Farrell his performance suffers. He isn't doing bad, but wins are tough to come by for him.

He's pitching right around his career average. It was unlikely that he would repeat last year's performance. Regardless, I wanted him back even though his contract is too long.

And he would be even more forlorn if he didn't have Ross on his side.

Is his contract worth it for a 105 ERA+? I'd say no.

In the end, I think it was the correct decision for the FO not to try to beat thc Cubs offers. I think his contract will be okay for 3 or 4 years, but Lester could become a big financial burden in the last couple of years. However, I think Lester would have re-signed for something closer to a Homer Bailey contract if the FO could have gotten it done in spring training.

I agree completely. Kimmi you came on board after I said that the Sox should sign Lester as soon as the 2013 season ended. I think the Bailey money is nuts. Lester is still worth more so 100-110 should have gotten it done over 4-5 years. Oh well!

There are many who believed that the FO never really wanted Lester back, and I can understand that thinking. However, this is one area in which I think the FO really just screwed up.

I'm one of them. Most teams realize that in today's market, you will be paying for very little at the ends of many of these big contracts. With respect to Jon Lester, I'm trying to give them credit for not being stupid. They gambled and lost.
