Ortiz is likely to vest for 2017 too, so there is no DH spot for Hanley until the last year of his contract.

And this is why the Sox need to get rid of the lazy bastard.

He ain't no stud at the plate and is of little value at all for that kind of money.

He can't ( or won't ) play any defense.

Just useless.

Hopefully some other team is stupid enough to want him.

Trading him would be my preference, and the alternative would be trading Panda and moving Hanley to 3B.

If the plan is to off load Sandoval or Ramirez, it should Sandoval.

This team still needs a solid bat behind Ortiz and Hanley is the better of the two.

I agree. One of them has to be moved. If HRam was putting up better numbers you might be able to convince someone that need a power bat that he is your DH. Panda has never put up huge regular season numbers, he made his $$$$$ based on his October performance. I think Sox fans are down on him because of his poor D this year. He is getting older and I don't care what he says, the weight becomes more of an issue the older you get. I would revisit the Panda / Shields bad contract trade. Put Shields in the back half of the rotation and as a 4 or 5 he would be productive. Granted its a lot of $$$$$ for a 4 or 5, but its a lot of $$$$$ Panda is getting paid to be average.

Is anyone else as excited as I am in looking forward to Rick Porcello's return to the mound this evening?

I'll need to grab some Maker's Mark on my way home.

I was actually very much looking forward to his return. I'm still expecting good things from him going forward.

He could be a good #4 if he returns to form.

This game was the reverse lock theory in action. One of the top dominant pitchers facing off against the worst starter in the league, and in our last series against each other, the ChiSox annihilated our pitching.

Porcello is 2-0 in starts against Sale this year. The Sox are also 2-0 against King Felix this year.

Crazy game.

I though he pitched against Quintana, just before hitting the DL.

And the Sox got hammered.

You are 100% correct. What I should have said was, the Sox are 2-0 against Sale this year.

I'm surprised they didn't score 5 against Sale.

They must slipping.

I think Panda is having a bad defensive season and can still play 3B, but HRam no longer can field. He is a DH! This first base thing you have to try to open up playing time for Castillo and Bradley. I still think the best move is to trade him to someone who needs a DH and eat a lot of $$$$$$$. Addition by subtraction.

I honestly think the sox are going to try and deal for a front line starter. I honestly believe that Betts will be packaged with a guy like Owens and you'll see Matt Harvey or Syndergaard or DeGrom in Boston. Then I could see you guys in the mix for Upton to take LF. Your OF in 2016 would be Upton, JBJ, Castillo and your rotation would be headlined by Harvey

He just turned 28 5 days ago. He plays average defense, has light tower power, and has consistently been able to take pitches and walk. Moving him to Fenway would most likely see him hit 30HR with 100RBI. The guy also is pretty healthy, as he's on pace for his 5th straight season of playing 149+ games. I know people want to look at Hanley and make a comparison, but Hanley was asked to play a new position, has been a cancer in the clubhouse and has a history of being injured on the regular. This guy is different and could be a difference maker in your clubhouse. I honestly think job #1 for Dombrowski will be to get an ace. And I don't think Henry will give him the $200+ mil he would need to secure a 28-31 yr old ace. He'll have to get creative to get his ace. But Henry would have no issue throwing around the $150 mil he'd need to get Upton.

@PeteAbe: Blake Swihart .341/.398/.471 last 24 games since coming off DL. .241/.279/.323 in 40 games prior. #redsox catching in good shape

@PeteAbe: One more: Xander Bogaerts has a 3.6 WAR. Among all MLB shortstops, only Brandon Crawford (5.7) is higher. +3 DRS, too.

Since the best way for a team coming off of a playoff berth (and maybe World Series win, since baseball works like that) - in a market of a large number of people (and an always passionate NL market who has been waiting quite some time) - will trade cheap controllable pitching the season after the bounce.

I don't see this happening. I think that outfield is set for next year. A free agent pitcher signing and a trade for one more without breaking up that outfield is very possible. Dombrowski has other pretty good trade options with this group.

Pedroia (Thunder) still thinks the playoffs are possible for these Red Sox.

“I keep telling the guys, we win every game and we’re in,” he said. “That’s basically the truth. We’re not eliminated. I know everyone thinks I’m crazy anyway, but that’s the way I look at it and that’s the way I want all our guys to look at it.”

Thunder and Pedey are on the same wavelength.

I noted 21-4 gets to 85 wins ... (21-3 now) ... which is on the "stranger things have happened" level. I certainly wouldn't bet anything important on it.

Until the numbers say otherwise, the playoff are still possible. Probable, no, but possible, yes. I agree with Pedroia that that's the way all the guys should look at it. I wouldn't want to play with a teammate who thinks any other way.

Hanley has officially been shut down for the season.

Pablo has pneumonia and it is unlikely that he will return this season.
