Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic, agent Brian Mejia has confirmed to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Taveras was 22.

GM John Mozeliak expressed his condolences to the family according to USA Today, but said the team was awaiting more details before making a formal announcement. MLB announced the news on Twitter.

Taveras made his MLB debut with St. Louis this season and hit .239 in 80 games. Taveras hit a game-tying pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the NLCS against the Giants two weeks ago Sunday.

Before the season, Baseball America ranked Taveras as the third best prospect in baseball, saying he was an "all-star in the making." Taveras was expected to compete for an outfield job in spring training.

So tragic.

What a miserable piece of news to hear. Two young lives snuffed out just like that. What a waste. I hope there aren't any booby traps around how he and his girl met their end. No drugs, alcohol from either side of that tragedy. My heart goes out to his and her family.

Its never good to see a guy with superstar potential never achieve it, but this is far more tragic. What misfortune for his family and organization.

Everyone was probably already thinking it. I don't understand these guys with hundreds of thousands of dollar salaries don't just take a cab. Uber is really convenient (although probably not available there). If I owned a baseball organization, I probably would even start comping that kind of thing.

Drunk or not, I consider this a total waste of a human life. He apparently was short on grey matter if he even had any but a guy that young snuffing out his life is tough to take, and when you add to it his girlfriend it becomes a double whammy. Like Youk much of my sympathy went down the crapper but it is still two lives dead in a stupid action on their parts. It does tend to make me feel a little vacant by such a tragedy.

Taking a cab here is not nearly as complicated as taking a cab in the US. There are over 100 taxi cab companies with units available all the time. Average waiting time for a taxi in a tourist area like the one he was is five minutes. I mourn his loss, but he was immature and dumb. Bad combo.
