He's got a hood sinker, not a huge flyball risk.

Plus, imagine having a good sinker with an infield of Fielder and Cabrera... Gross.

Detroit is rumored to be acquiring a REds pitcher for prospects. I will be pissed if they get Cueto and use the 2 guys that we send them for Porcello.

I actually hope it is. If they are trading Cueto they are blowing it up. If it's Latos they probably still gonna go for it in 2015 and won't be trading any other SP. And Latos is the guy I'd like to see the Sox get..

@PeteAbe: #redsox add two starters with good GB rates, stingy on walks and high in IP. Haven't given up anything they really needed, either.

It sounds like Alex Wilson and a minor piece. I would imagine Wilson is intended to offset the qualifying offer, and that the Tigers consider Porcello and Cespedes equal value otherwise.

Another perk is that the Red Sox have cleared some fringe 40 man roster spots this morning. All the pieces are starting to fall together, but they still need an ace.

After adding innings eaters like Miley and Porcello, I don't see them going after Latos. They saved a lot of money losing out on Lester and signining 400 combined innings at an inexpensive cost. They have plenty of money to land a big fish like Scherzer or Shields.

It's nice to see Ben managed to offload Webster and Wilson, and still managed to get something valuable in return.

I never got the feeling they should be someone the team should rely on in the future.

So that's it, welcome James Shields?

The quantity would be there with him, Porcello, Miley, we'd just have to hope for the best with everything else.

Yes two decent pitchers. You can tell Christmas at Fenway is this weekend, with all these moves occurring.

Those two are going to be way overpriced. Scherzer will get 175M and Shields may go as high as 120M. Sox are not getting those 2 IMO. Latos would give them a good rotation to start the season and they would still have plenty of money and chips to trade to get a SP later in the season.

#3 and #4 are settled. Still need an ace and a decent #2. Trust the mammaries.

I would be very surprised to see the Red Sox trade for 4 starters this offseason. They probably will get another #2, and then go for another at the deadline.

It's a nice comfort to have a big #1 at the top of your rotation. IT pretty much ensures against long damaging losing streaks. For years Pedro was the guy, then it was Pedro/Schilling and Schilling/Beckett. Going into 2013 there was no consensus that Lester was a stopper typ #1, but he emerged as such a pitcher. Maybe Miley can emerge as such guy. He had been a very big prospect a few years back and he has pitched well for a lousy team. Maybe if we addd another 200 inning guy below ace level we will be fine. Of course having an ace is more comforting.

I agree. If they didn't want to go over $135M for Lester, they won't for Scherzer or Shields either. I think Shields will get more than $120M, more like $140M

Yep. They like to make a splash before the tickets go on sale.

And a decent 2? I figure they got 4 starters in Buchholz, Kelly, Miley and Porcello now. Kelley I guess would get bumped but I personally would like to see him get a shot at the rotation. But I could see the value of his FB in the BP.

But you shouldn't be surprised to see them trade for two, then sign two. Maybe one of the signees won't be a #2, but they definitely need a #1.

Your use of a different WAR (whichever one is lowest depending on your argument) makes me not wanna give a s*** about anything else you say, but i'll bite. Miley has a much better track record than his 2014, and obviously than Rubby (who i still hate to see go, and whom you've been s***ing on for a while now, saying he's clearly a reliever). I'd feel much better arguing about these subjects with you if you didn't move the goalposts to be an annoying negative nelly with anything regarding the Sox.

Break out The Chart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neither of them is a #2 nor #1. We still need 2 arms.

Filling the rotations with 2's and 3's and adding some depth at the back end would also work heading into the season. The price for #1's might be too much right now. There could be some good rentals at the deadline. Sox will have a good amount of cash and still have some chips to deal. If they get Latos or Masterson before the season starts they will have a good rotation with the upside with flexibility to make changes if needed.

Marlins are negotiating with Reds for Latos.

He's got Elbow history but I wanted the Sox to be in on him. If Cincy is talking SP trades with both Detroit and Marlins they must be not planning on going for it in 2015. If they are going total rebuild I'd call about Votto.

edit: holy s*** nm I just saw Vottos extension kicked in this upcoming season. I thought a few years had come off it already.

Good post. I believe this is what Cherries meant when he said that there are multiple ways to build a rotation.

I'm still hoping for a #1. Not necessarily and Ace but as you said, a Stopper.

I doubt that the Sox will get a #2 now if they get a #1.

Maybe they can move Buch????

Porcello is a ground ball pitcher who will be at the mercy of his defense. For years his FIP had outpaced his ERA, but with a better D behind him last yr, that trend changed. Bogaerts is gonna be under a little pressure with him, but he's a good piece to get. Miley is a 4 in Boston. Porcello is a 2/3 depending on if he can replicate his ERA from last year. this is a good move on a couple levels as now you can get a draft pick for Porcello when he leaves via FA next yr, something you couldn't get from Cespedes

Maybe the #1 they're focused on is Hamels.

I think he is Dodger bound. They just got the Rollins trade out of the way first.

Dodgers asked about Utley too! Crazy...
