Question: WTF is up with this goddam Lackey? Last night the ump was squeezing him a bit and JL got himself tossed in the 3rd inning! (the ump must be a lip reader) I don't remember that EVER happening so early in a game to a pissed off pitcher.

AJ has been a model citizen, but Lackey's not doing it "the Cardinal way"

Several years ago a number of posters jumped all over me because I called Lackey a "slug". Well he was a slug then and continues to be a slug now. I am glad he is gone. The Cardinals can keep him.

You can be both an a-hole and a valuable contributor. See also Josh Beckett, 2007.
Of course, but Lackey made no friends in the clubhouse when he turned the game over to the pen in the 3rd. That's the kind of selfish, thoughtless f*** up that hurts the team. The GM needs to ship his f***ing ass to the Rangers.

Man, I tell you, we miss Kelly bad.

Winning at all costs is not in my lexicon. I was brought up to believe in good sportsmanship and not to divorce a woman right after she's been diagnosed with breast cancer. Lackey wll always be a slug in my book no matter how many games he wins.i

Lackey didn't and doesn't do it the Cardinal way. He is a Red Sox through and through and got disgusted when those cheap bastards low balled Lester, his pitching pal, and showed John they didn't give a s*** about winning this year.

Oh Elk, we finally disagreed on something. I loved Lackey and I miss him. He was a tower of strength for the team last season and the one pitcher who had to work overtime because a lack of run support when he normally pitched. He showed his true metal in the post-season. To me the guy is a warrior.

Well on that score Elk you make a very good point. I was talking about John on the mound and not as a husband. Maybe I should have said he has both virtues and vises. You don't treat your wife that way and we agree on that since we're both very happily married men.

Didn't Clemens get tossed in the first (or second?) inning of a playoff game for cursing at the ump? (Or is that what you were alluding to.)

Believe or not the Giants are getting more out of Peavy then the Cards are of Lackey. He is a better club house guy too.

45 years 5 daughters and 15 grandchildren but then who is counting, Fred

Still upstaging me my friend. Five daughters to my one and 15 grandchildren to my two. Looks like I'm the Red Sox in one of their typical games this season in comparison. BTW, I have studied this for years.....Whatever men might think of having sons, once they have daughters they know they've hit the jackpot. A son is a son until he takes a wife while a daughter is a daughter for all of her life. Hell, why am I telling you that. You're the pro in this game.

I am starting to see the value in the Lackey trade. The real get here was Joe Kelly, who is going to be a consistent #3 starter for this team at low prices for a few years. Allen Craig is starting to look a whole lot like a salary dump by the Cards, but maybe the Red Sox can get rid of him somehow.

I still have no idea how the Red Sox somehow managed to come away without any top tier prospects for Lester/Lackey, but atleast Kelly is cheap and reliable for the next 4 years.

Kelly averaged 6.1IP per start and had a WAR of 0.3 in 10 starts. He was on pace for a 0.9WAR should he have pitched that way for 30 starts. He's a #3 starter on a horrendous team. He's a #5 on a good team, and if he's your #3 next yr, you should expect the same outcome as this yr

Just my two cents worth, but I think Kelly is probably a number four or five starter...with potential to be either a number three or possibly even a middle reliever. He is definitely a major league pitcher, but I am not sure he has positively established his niche.

I think the Red Sox looked at him that way when they made the trade. He is a fairly young pitcher, but he is more established than a prospect. Whatever role he achieves, I believe he will be a successful major leaguer.

When the Lackey deal was made Cherrington said that Kelly had a "live arm" and was not yet a finished product. I think that what we saw of him this season backs that up.

I see him as a #4 but if the Sox "only" acquire a #1 and #2 then Kelly is the #3.

To me, Kelly is one of the brights spots of this horrendous season. I think that he has similar stuff to what a younger Clay had. Only unlike Clay Kelly has a brain and a heart.

I'm optimistic about this guy.
