Who is going to take Peavy's spot in the rotation for now?

Workman or Webster would be my guess.

I really was hoping Doubront would take the next step because he had been, over the last couple of years, shown signs of becoming a solid 4th starter. But that seemed to all go poof! this year.

What many of the younger posters on this site just do not understand is that the Boston market will not tolerate a team constructed ( to begin the new season ) the way San Diego, Houston, and other flailing bottom dwelling franchises are.

This is a major league city and market. Without a team that looks to promise at least .500 ball all year long the gig will be up and much of the fan base will evaporate. The Sox brass know this and should be counted on to avoid such a situation.

GMs throughout the league are catching on to the notion that the best results are with younger, more cost-effective guys. I'm not saying field a lineup of nobodies. They have to be good prospects, but I want to see a younger core supplemented by good veterans. I don't want a Yankees style constant hollowing out of the farm in trades for guys that cost $20mil per year and are already 33, 35. I also dont want the Sox to spend a certain amount just to justify ticket prices. Not if they are signing or trading for expensive broken down players past their prime.

Cherrington said, when asked about trading Lester, that he wouldn't comment specifically on any players but that the Sox are listening on all players.

To me? That means if the Sox get offered something like Joc Pederson for Lester, he's out the door.

Kind of getting excited for 2015. Especially if we can land Pederson. Sign HanRam for SS/3B with Bogaerts.

Lineup of:

Betts RF

Ramirez SS/3B

Bogaerts 3B

Ortiz DH

Napoli 1B

Pedroia 2B

Pederson LF

Vazquez C

Bradley CF

Rotation:

Lee

Lackey

Buchholz

RDLR

Ranaudo

That'd be an exciting team to watch next year (or even the 2nd half of this year). Would be a good idea to make many of those moves right now to see what you've got for next year and see what moves you need to make.

It also gives the Dodgers a leg up on negotiations with him. Better them than the Yankees.

Yup. Plus, no guarantee that Lester signs with them.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up hitting FA if he's traded. He's not going to take a discount from a team he's traded to like he would in Boston.

And if its me, and I had 2 options in front of me - 1. Sign Lester at 6/144 or 2. Trade Lester, acquire Joc Pederson, then sign lester for 6/170, give me the latter all day. It's only money and Joc could be a star. He's the only thing this farm is missing - a power hitting OF.

XB batting 3 rd is a little optimistic.

Yeh because it might be Stanton.

Corey Seager was just pulled from his game. Per Gammons, the Marlins "lust for Seager".

Red Sox send Lester and Herrera to Dodgers. Red Sox send Mookie & Middlebrooks to Marlins Dodgers send Seager & Lee to Marlins. Marlins send Stanton to Red Sox.

Is that what peter gammons proposed?

no i'm just spitballing. gammons did propose that the sox dish lester to the dodgers for seager then flip him for stanton though.

I'd be scared to give lester to the dodgers. They might offer him something he can't refuse after this season is over and its good bye jon lester.

Lester, Herrera, Mookie, & WMB for Stanton?

No thanks.

considering lester is a FA after this year, yeah that would be a really really good deal for the Sox.

That's a good point. I guess I am still hopeful we keep him.

Stanton WILL get traded at some point. He's going to command something in the neighborhood of 8 years, $28-30 million a year. Zero chance the Marlins will do that. So the question is, what teams can (a) offer them a package that they'll really want, and (B) afford to pay Stanton that kind of money?

There are not that many teams that can do that.

NYY - Can certainly pay him, but the farm system doesn't have what it takes to get him.

StL - Has the pieces to get him, but they never spend that kind of money.

LAD - Since they're the new Yankees, they can afford to pay him and they have the pieces (Seager, Pederson) to get him. But holy cow, will they want to have a $300 million payroll?

Phi - Willing to spend, but has many big commitments already, and I don't think they have the prospects to pull off a deal.

ChC - Has both the prospects and the ability to pay, plus a GM ballsy enough to make it happen.

Bos - See above.

I think that's probably about it. Long story short, Boston is one of a few teams that has the resources to trade for Stanton *and* the ability to pay him what he'll command. And since he's going to get traded (near 100% certainty of that within a year or two), I think the Sox should be collecting as many assets as possible to get him.

And maybe that's the idea with Lester. Maybe they figure they have such a promising group of starting pitching prospects that they can afford to go the inexpensive route there, which frees up enough money to go get Stanton and pay huge bucks for him. So maybe 2016 is the year they hope to have it all pulled together:

C - Vazquez

1b - Middlebrooks

2b - Pedroia

3b - Bogaerts

SS - Marrero

LF - Holt

CF - Bradley

RF - Tomas (Cuban prospect)

DH - Stanton

Subs - Swihart, Nava, Coyle, a couple of other veterans

SP - Buchholz, RDLR, Webster, Workman, Ranaudo (whomever they haven't traded to get Stanton), plus a couple of moderately priced veterans

RP - a group of veterans, mixing in a couple of the kids like Brian Johnson

That team wouldn't cost that much, could easily afford Stanton and Tomas, the terrific Cuban prospect. All the kids would have had a year or two worth of MLB seasoning. It would be ready to compete for a championship, I believe.

OJ, perhaps you haven't seen what the Yankee farm has done the past few months, but they're dramatically improved from last season's abomination. That being said, I'm not sure the Yankees would want to blow their entire prospect load on Stanton right now, when they need pitching long term. I honestly think the idea that the sox will go inexpensive in the rotation with the hopes of going expensive on a COF is a bad idea. Let's say the sox keep to their policy and Lester is gone. Lackey isn't throwing for $500K next yr, so I bet they pawn him off too. Which veteran is going to be leading the rotation and teaching the kids how to come along in the bigs? Clay? Do you really want that? Every good rotation has veteran leadership to keep the guys accountable.

The Skanks are reportedly interested in Willingham. He is a potent bat. I wouldn't mind seeing him in LF for us for the next 2 or 3 years. Ben shouldn't let a guy like him slip through his fingers while he is in sell mode. You need to be building while selling. It's not that hard to do both at the same time. It's like walking while chewing gum.

Lackey isn't throwing for $500K next yr,

Why not? He signed the contract knowing full well that it was a possibility. He got paid over $15 million in 2011 for being the worst starter in the league, then another $15 million in 2012 for not pitching at all. He knows that he owes the Sox next season at 500k.

Posted
Willingham is a FA after the season. There's no reason for the sox to deal for him right now. You can get him in the offseason as a FA

I'd get him and sign him now. He's not going to be a high profile FA. I think that he could be locked down now.

I am getting tired of hearing and reading the excuse for XB that most guys his age are in AA. The truth is that he has played like a AA player. He has been completely overwhelmed. That's no rap on him. The FO should have recognized the fact that he was out of his league and sent him back to AAA for more seasoning. Contrary to what others have posted, he has not proved everything he needed to prove in the minors. Let him dominate at AAA and learn how to play SS. He didn't dominate at AAA.

There are so few of us posting these days. If it were possible our posts would echo because the place is so empty. Bells, Fred, Spud and I should just do an internet Sox talk show. Spud would be the host/straight man and Bells, me and Fred would be the arguing talking heads. Fred would be the money. The switchboard would light up from people wanting to cuss out Fred. VA Soxfan , you are on the air. Lol!
