Dustin is 30 and signed for a long time. He's gonna be retired in about 8-10 yrs. You don't have a guy play out of position past their arbitration years on a presumed big time contract while you wait. Betts doesn't have the arm for 3b nor the range for SS. He's a 2b and hence, he's redundant in this system

Betts definitely has the range for SS. He was drafted as a SS and moved to 2B because of his arm, not his range. But that was 3 years ago, I'm not sure how much his arm has strengthened since then. I do know, however, that the Sox are exploring the option of having him on the left side of the infield, though.

Is Mookie untouchable though? He's a high talent player who plays a position that is about as blocked as possible. If he can be traded to pull in an ace or hammer for another World Series run, would it be worth it? Clearly it would need to be an impact player -- or multiple impact players coming back.

Otherwise, we might need to start sending some of these guys into the outfield.

That's the way I see it Pal. If we have to trade Mookie it sure as heck better be for a real quality talent since we would have to add others to the pot to g et someone like Stanton or someone of that ilk. We are heavy with left side of the infield prospects but one thing that chills me is this talk of moving Bogaerts over to third base. A month ago I hinted that maybe Xander might be a choker and caught some hell for it. A month later we see that he has been totally ineffective hitting with RISP, down to around a 100 average. Before talk of moving him to 3B let's wait and see if he can show some talent f or driving in some of the runs he kept leaving on base and also show some of the power we all expected him to show. Actually, I think with some experience he will merge into a good shortstop, and if not, he could segue into left field where we will need someone since we are denuded of good prospects in the outfield.

Betts have reach base 70 straight. Game is in progress and he is 2/4 3RBI (HR), BB

This guy have move into top 20 prospect consideration by mid-season.

Top 20??

If this kid keeps hitting for average, power, getting on base, swiping bags, and playing D like he is, this is a top 10, potentially top 5 prospect.

Easily the biggest 5-tool prospect I've seen in this system since Nomar.

His 162 game average right now is .401/.467/.601, 28 HR, 112 RBI, 56 2B, 5 3B, 84 (!!!) SB, 204 Runs.

These numbers are just absolutely silly. He obviously can't keep this up, but somehow these numbers have gone up since the last time I posted about him.

His production right now is insane. It doesn't match the SR, so it remains to be seen how he will look should he come up. That being said, it is curious that the sox haven't promoted him, right? I bet they are showcasing him and want to build his worth

Well he has only had 35 games in AA and 51 games in A+, so even starting him in AA was fairly aggressive. That being said, I can't imagine that he will be there past the ASB, if he even makes it that far.

Looking back at some of the studs from the system, I got this info for games in AA:

Pedroia (age 21) - 66 G, .324/.409/.508

Ellsbury (ages 22/23) - 71 G, .345/.418/.488

Youkilis (ages 23/24) - 140G, .331/.477/.474

Bogaerts (age 19/20) - 79 G, .315/.392/.531

Betts (age 21) - 35 G, .401/.467/.619

So, even when players are absolutely crushing it/not being challenged, they still leave them there for around 65-70 games. So another 30-35 games for Betts, which would put him up for a promotion to Pawtucket around 7/1.

some love for Mookie

EricNeely @EricNeely13

@mookiebetts is hitting .409/.481/.628 w/30 SBs during his run of 70 straight games getting on base!

David Cameron @DCameronFG

Since start of 2013 season, Mookie Betts has played exactly 162 games. 204 H, 48 2B, 5 3B, 21 HR, 101 BB, 70 K, 56 SB, 7 CS.

Marc Normandin ‏@Marc_Normandin

The most ridiculous thing about Mookie Betts' streak is that he's averaging over two times on base per game over 70 games.

. Mookie Betts, 2B, Red Sox — It’s looking more like Betts will be moving to center field when he gets to Triple A. It will be interesting to monitor when it occurs. Some of the scouts who have watched him wonder if he wouldn’t be a third base candidate if Will Middlebrooks continues to struggle. As we’ve pointed out before, Betts might be suited for the super-utility role, a la Ben Zobrist.

They have been thinking about it for a while. Betts isn't going to play 2B with Pedroia here and he is a natural CF with his speed. Makes a ton of sense with the OF depth of this team. Edited by Station 13

Yes, they have been trying to think of a position for him for a while, but they moved him to CF after Bradley made his comment. Maybe it's just a coincidence. Maybe not. His comment shows me something -- that he is not close to breaking out of his funk at the plate.
Posted
It's no coincidence. He plays natural OF before the draft. The Red Sox need him to get to the big league club soon and his path as a 2B is block.
Posted
If they think he is a viable CF prospect for them, he'd be in AAA by now. His bat is very advanced, so he isn't learning anything else from AA

They're testing him out first in CF. Once he looks natural at it, AAA and major league won't be far off. His minor league stats are off the chart. More walks than strikeouts, a base stealer, and hits for power.

If he keeps showing he can hit, he plays CF, Bradley either gets traded, gets sent down or becomes a utility OF, and we get a LF who has some power pop.

Not true. See my last post about how long it took them to promote other guys who were virtually in the same boat.

Apparently Jacko knows more about the team's MO with prospects than the team itself.

Betts 2/4, 3BB, SB

Betts should really be up to AAA. AA is a joke for him.

Stat-----I think it may be time to start the rebuilding program because if what has transpired the past two weeks is of any indication the 2014 season in almost toast. The front office may not promote anyone right now but they ought to get their ducks in a row and make the moves and position changes so our best prospects are geared for a spot instead of having two of them competing for the same position while other spots go begging. It starts with Betts. Move him to SS or to CF. Bradley cannot hit---his 2013 short stay, his ST debacle and his minus 200 average so far should tell the front office loud enough that is so. Cecchini at third, Bogaerts at either short or left field, Swihart at catcher or first or in the outfield IF Vasquez can show that he can hit. I hear Travis Shaw is coming along well so he might actually be our next first baseman. Develop the kids, hope pitchers like Renaudo, Owens, Barnes, and, yes mvp, even your Rubby can crack the roster. As much as I want to see them win now I could take it on the chin for a couple of years if I know we have a solid plethora of good prospects ready to jump in and make their mark. I just hope there are no counterfeits in the prospect pool like Bradley has turned out to be. The baseball operations people have to get this one right IMHO.

Travis Shaw just got called up to Pawtucket. He had a .954 OPS with 11 HR's for Portland. He's a left handed hitting first baseman.

I think that he may be the only power hitting prospect in the system.

I hope that he makes progress in Pawtucket by seeing near-major league quality pitching.

Has anyone heard anything about Mookie Betts? He hasn't been in the Sea Dogs lineup the past 2 nights, but I haven't seen anything about him being hurt.

Can't imagine he's hurt without anyone knowing. I'd be beyond shocked if he was involved in a trade. Perhaps a promotion to AAA that just hasn't yet been announced?
