If Cano leaves the Yankees, Drew seems like a lock for the Yanks. Teams are hesitant to give up a first rounder, but the Yanks would be losing a late third rounder... seems like a nonfactor to them.

I think they'd go for Infante first.

For 2014, it is a solid move. We'll see how it goes after that

Only if he doesn't get injured again. I used to call him Mr. Glass. No ill will toward him though. He wanted the big payday and the Yankees were in buying mode. Appreciative for what he did for the Red Sox.

I'm hearing Ellsbury was an ownership sign, and some Yankees in the FO aren't happy. Not difficult to see that, since their real target should be Cano. Seems like the higher-ups just don't want to meet his price. We'll see.

This doesn't make sense for the Yankees...

Cano has missed 14 games in the last 7 years.

Ells has missed 264 games in the last 4 years.

I would've spent the money on Cano easily, knowing what your are already getting (number wise). Injuries have seemed to plague the Yankees in the recent years, and this very well could turn into another one. I will never wish an injury on a player, but I hope this doesn't work out. What a sell out. Things like this make you appreciate players like Pedroia who take a pay cut to stay with a team who took a chance on him.

Funny how we as fans overreact when a baseball team "overpays" LOL. If they pay (overpay for us) is because those contracts mean "pennies" for them vs the money they are making/will make. Teams like NYY or LAD among a few others can spend like this any given Sunday. Obviously the NYY haven't finished. The Ells/McCann moves speak volumes: they are on I-want-to-win-now mode. They will land Cano and if you rush me they will land Shoo as well. Do not forget that they still need pitching; no gentlemen, this is just the beginning, their shopping cart is far to be ready.

Will they end up with a 300 MUSD payroll? You betcha!

I'm not mad because he's gone. I'm mad because he decided to be a traitor by going to the Yankees. I'm not a big Yankees hater (more of a Rays hater), but you can't just do this. It's the lame of all lames. Ellsbury was my favorite player and the best player on the Sox. This is worse than the Damon trade because Ells won two WS titles with us before doing this. I guess temptation can defeat anybody.

We should get a new center fielder. I have a feeling Bradley Jr will be a .230 hitter.

And Hinckley had a feeling Jodie Foster would be really impressed if he blew away Ronald Reagan. That's why people don't make important decisions based on vague feelings. Although honestly, I can't believe she wasn't at least a little bit impressed.

Are you still bitter that we didn't lose 3 straight games in the ALDS?

Back on point of course I'm not happy that Els ended up in the Bronx. But let's be honest, a 7 year $153 deal for a 30 year old who is always hurt is a panic move. Sure it will sting for the first few years but just like with Pedro by the second half of that deal we will be the ones who are laughing. Still it's a big loss and I don't see how anyone can expect Bradley to fill it. I agree that he has the look of a career .230 hitter.

Quite honestly, the bargain of the century.

This signing is stupid and was done just to put a hurt on the 2013 World Champion Red Sox. I hope that Cano signs elsewhere, the Sox sign Napoli & Tanaka and repeat, while at the same time the Yankees finish last in the division.

If the sox had nobody in the minors to take over, then yeah. But Ells is proving more and more that 2011 was an anomaly. He's not a power hitter. But he's a true leadoff hitter capable of hitting .300 with a .350+OBP and will steal a s*** ton of bases. Guys like this do not age well. Had he continued his power surge, he'd be worth a lot more since at least the power should continue as he aged. But he hasn't, so buyer beware. Also, having a guy like Bradley allows you to see if the market comes back to the sox. If Ells falls into Bourn territory in terms of money and years, you gotta go for him. If he's going into 6-7 yrs, you gotta pass

I agree.

You are dead wrong about JBJ. You are right about Ellsbury however. I was explaining to my wife this morning that I feel like I felt when I went through a divorce 16 years ago. I do not mind Ellsbury getting his big payday but to do it with the spankmee's is just plain wrong. Detroit, Seattle, Texas would be fine ... but not the NYY. I think that the Luxury tax needs more teeth.

JBJ will be a 15-20 hr, 20+ sb, .280 avg, .370 obp guy. He will also play a better CF than Ellsbury.

Are you trying to cheer me up? It's working.

I agree, but probably not right away. There will be some growing pains.

Honestly, I see 2014 being a year where the Sox win 90-93 games, are very much in the playoff hunt, and probably get in. And from there, who knows? But if they stay on track then this team will be a beast from 2015-2020 as the kids show up, and there are lots of quality kids showing up. The future is extremely bright for them.

Ben is doing this right. We just need to let them do their thing and not freak out if they don't win the WS this year.

The whole "traitor" crap is stupid. He owes the Red Sox nothing. Players have the ability (and right) to sign with whoever they want. Also, per your valuation on JBJ, i'm glad you're not scouting for the Sox, since you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

JBJ will never steal 20 bases in the big leagues. I'd be surprised if he was ever allowed to run 20 times a year. He stole 9 bases last year combined between AAA and MLB and was caught 7 times. This man can not beat AAA catchers on the basepaths, he should be tried only very conservatively against big league catchers.

JBJ is a smart defender with great athleticism at the corners and decent in the middle but he doesn't have elite speed, and the power potential remains to be seen as well. All we know is that he's got really good plate discipline. Which is a really good place to start. The rest is up in the air.

I've said this before but my comp with JBJ is David Dejesus. That's probably a disappointing name for some people who want to expect Mike Trout or something, but David Dejesus was really solid in his day, boasted a lot of doubles power if little home run power, and as long as he could hit over .270 was borderline elite as an on base hitter. That's a package we should take out of a rookie if we can get it.

I get that with Ellsbury gone all hopes swing ti JBJ but honestly I feel that isn't fair to him. He's still got a ton of leaning to do about how to be a big leaguer, and the tools package isn't close to Ellsbury's -- he's going to have to be a lot smarter and more selective to produce at the same level, that's just a fact So it won't do to overrate him and set ourselves up for disappointment, and if you predict a 5 tool guy out of JBJ, that's exactly what you're doing.

JBJ should be able to replicate Ells' 2008 season with less steals, but a higher OPS.

If by "less steals" you mean "less than 10," I roughly agree with you.

People need to get the "speedy CF" idea out of their heads when dealing with JBJ in particular. people seem to think that "he's not as fast as Ellsbury" still allows them to set him up in roughly the Coco Crisp range. That's not going to happen. JBJ is a good defensive CF because he's smart and positions himself very well, but he does not have top end speed, heck, for a CF he's downright below average.
