With two older catchers I think Lavarnway will get a chance to prove himself sometime next summer. If he doesn't produce then Vazquez will be the one young catcher in 2015 or possibly earlier if Lavarnway production is that bad.

I think they like two veteran catchers right now for their largely veteran starters. The pitching may well improve this year because of the catching.

The Sox having the two veteran catchers on one year contracts means that they have a lot of confidence in their young catching prospects Vazquez and Swihart. This is a lot different then what the $pankees did to their young catching prospects by signing McCann. Makes you think that once again they have over valued their prospects.

So many talksox members are all over this guy. I'm not sure why.

For the record, I wanted Salty back even though it was apparent that he did not fit into the Sox plans near or long term.

AJ may not fit the Sox mold for taking many pitches and a big OBP but he seems to have the respect of the pitching staff and he said to call a good game.

Yesterday he threw out someone attempting to steal second. This may be an aberration. I hope that it isn't.

I think he will do well for the Sox this year. And maybe if one of the three young catchers in the pipeline do not make it to the bigs soon, he can be had for a cheap enough price through 2015.

AJ is a little better than replacement level. He is a downgrade from Salty - but a better contract given the Red Sox needs. I think there is a solid chance Vasquez ends up here if he can put together a solid offensive season at Pawtucket. There is no way a guy of AJ's caliber is going to block a guy of Vasquez' potential. A guy with Vasquez' glove, even if his bat is empty calories - is good enough to be an average starter.

I don't think the issue with AJ is his non-taking approach. It is that combined with not being especially good defensively and a bit of a locker room lawyer in past stops. The calling a game thing can be replaced - slack picked up by coaches as needed. The Sox staff is good.

I'm all for seeing Vasquez sooner rather than later.

I'll probably have to take the 20 minute drive to Pawtucket to do so.

What's the O/U on the date Pierzynski draws his first walk?

He is one of many who is not hitting. The pitching has been pretty good, so that has to count for something. As far as walks, not going to see many. It is so opposite the Sox approach.

AJ was a stopgap signing. He's not a problem. He calls a good game and can toss out baserunners. His OBP is not that high but he does put the ball in play which is a change of pace from all of Salty's futile k's with men in scoring position.

He can put the ball in play that a fielder catches ... he's not very good. A downgrade from last year - but a contractually sensible one.

A defensive upgrade, but only a slight offensive downgrade.

It seems true because of Salty's reputation and strikeouts - but largely unfounded. But the contractual issues are big, enough to make a 1-year hitch with him palatable ... but it'd look a lot better if a guy like Vasquez got ready for the show.

.749 OPS for A.J. over 17 seasons .741 OPS for Salty over 8 seasons.

@TonyMassarotti: FWIW ... Red Sox are 5-2 when David Ross starts, 4-10 when Pierzynski is the starter.

Shades of Salty 2011-12.

Saltalamacchia is tearing it up so far. .301/.405/.570. 1.6 WAR

His walks are way up, his strikeouts are way down, his BABIP is nearing the .400's. Could this be a case of the NL simply not knowing his weaknesses?

Could be a late bloomer. Although, I doubt he's going to hit 30 HR's with a 16% BB rate over a full season.

Guys, he got hot and cold last yr as well. He had some stretched where he carried the team, and others where he couldn't hit the side of a barn. One month does not a season make.

Soooo....you want Salty back? 'Cause i know i don't.

Nah, Pierzynski is doing OK, and I expect Saltalamacchia's Mike Piazza impression will end pretty soon.
