Uhhh... If we can't give 3 years to Salty after a career year I doubt we will lock up Hanigan for 3 years after a bad one

Well ... your comment is clever but in reality it all comes down to money. Hanigan will come cheap compared to Salty and he will make our pitching staff better. If you loose offensive players as FA's the best way to make it back is by improving your defense.

What do you guys think about signing Grady Sizemore to a minor league deal with invite to spring training? Fills a need as a good 5th OF/25th man next year. I assume in the market he'd have to take a bench role, but question is will anyone else give him a major league deal?

I do not know enough about his situation to comment but I do remember at one time he was considered the second coming.

Great quote I found... "A 31-year-old outfielder recovering from seven surgeries who hasn’t played baseball in two years and hasn’t played anything resembling a full season since 2008 "

Seven surgeries. That's a lot. He might be worth a minor league deal, but anything more than that would be a joke.

I just looked up his BRef page and it's really sad when you see just how good he was before he had problems with injuries. From his age 22 to 25 seasons, he was worth over an average of over 6 WAR a season with a high of 6.6 (twice) and a low of 5.5.

He could've been one of the biggest stars in the league if he'd been able to stay healthy.

Just throwing s*** at the wall, what do we think about JP Arencibia? The Jays are probably gonna let him go if they can't trade him.

He was horrifyingly bad last year, probably the worst starting catcher in baseball but in 2011 and 2012, he was able to slug in the .430's with 20 bomb power.

His plate discipline is s***** and he's a poor defender but if he can get back to pre-2013 levels, he might be a passable 1 year stop gap. I doubt he'd cost all that much.

It's a thin catching market and if we don't land Hannigan or resign Salty, Arencibia might be possible as a fall back option.

They appear to be going after defense as a catching priority--the playoffs had a big impression on them, as it should. They could give in and sign Salty for 2 years out of loyalty. They probably won't go 3 years unless they run out of better defensive options.

Salty is a good kid, rugged, and an improving hitter. But he has defensive limitations.

If Salty was willing to return on a 1 or 2 year deal for 6 million per or something like that, I think the Sox would do that.

Let's treat our pitchers better folks and sign Hanigan ... he will be cheaper than Salty and he is twice as good defensively.

Yes ... he had HOF written all over him.

Tigers Trade Doug Fister To Nationals

Source: Dioner Navarro to Toronto

Reports: M's, Willie Bloomquist close

I am getting tired and anxious as other teams are making things happen. Great deal for the Nationals.

Another Catcher off the market.

Another super utility guy is gone.

Last December, I was very anxious. This year I'm not a bit anxious. I'm just waiting to see the Championsip Banner hanging from the CF flagpole.

Like I said a week or so ago, if Hanigan gets picked up by someone else, then we can get a little anxious about the C market, but right now I think that's their #1 target.

Tigers got mauled in that trade of Fister. He's in his 1st year of arbitration and they got jack in return, particularly when he would have ranked as one of the better FA arms out there and certainly would have gotten at least 3/42 or 4/56 on the open market.

I think the Red Sox offseason hinges on what Napoli does. Whether or not he comes back has the biggest ripple effect on who they go after (for example, Beltran in LF so Nava/Carp can play 1B. go sign Hart?). If Drew doesn't resign, you just slide Bogaerts to SS and WMB at 3B. Ellsbury gone? JBJ takes over. But Nap requires a bit more juggling.

Heyman reporting that the Red Sox have agreed to terms with AJ Pierzynski.

I hope it's a 1 year deal and Pierzynski gets hurt on April 1st and I never have to see him play. Just awful. I absolutely despise this guy.

I don't understand why people hate this guy. He's durable. He hits well for a catcher and he has been on some winning ballclubs at every stop he has made. The one negative is that he is a bit long in the tooth. He is a better defensive csatcher than Salty and he will not strikeout every other AB.

He was voted as the #1 most hated player in the league. By other players.

I guess 2012 didn't teach us anything after all.

Pierzynski is a solid stopgap option talent wise, but... We also just became the most hated team in the league if this is true

1, he's not a free agent

2, the Red Sox can afford to pay someone high AAV on a two/three year deal. It's the commitment and blocking of young players that seems to concern the FO.

I can't check that link on my BB, but wasn't that a poll of opposing players? If so, who cares. Big Papi likes him from their Twins days. That's all that matters to me. The guy plays hard and smart. There is no dog in him like AGon, Crawford and Beckett.

I have always hated him so don't listen to me because I'm extremely biased in this aspect, to be fair.

Obviously the FO thought that this was the best option. Hard to make a judgement on the deal with the little information that we fans have. Vasquez is the future and a very bright future indeed. If you rush a player sometimes it can work against you in the long run.

He may be one of those guys you hate when he is an opponent but love him when he is on your team. Swisher is like that too. Victorino.is like that too.

I want to see the terms. This is obviously a stopgap measure, but if they have him more than 1 yr, I'm gonna laugh. Pitchers hate him. Other teams hate him. He's a lefty batter in a righty ball park. He doesn't walk at all. His only good offensive attribute is power and that'll be drained in Fenway. I'm surprised at this move. They must really hate Salty

Man ... I wish that the Sox were in on the Fister deal ... maybe they were but I would imagine we could have provided more to Detroit in return. Maybe Detroit did not want to deal with Boston.
