The position doesn't really mean anything, it's just an honorific for a player who is already considered a leader in the clubhouse and on the field. I don't really care if they do it or not, it's not like anyone doesn't already acknowledge Pedroia as the "leader" among the players.

With this team I don't see the Sox making someone the captain. There are leaders up and down this roster and it would be hard to select one. I think Pedey is the unofficial captain as he is the spark that pushes this team.

I don't see the Sox naming an official captain either nor do I think it necessary or even beneficial in their case.

Yankees, Jeter

White Sox, Konerko

Mets, Wright

Ha! Having a captain apparently works, then. Captain V. certainly got the RS over the hump the last two years of his reign.

I don't know if Pedroia has given his opinion on being captain, but my guess is that he probably doesn't want the title. He's loud, brash and he likes to needle the other guys. As a clubhouse guy, he helps keep the other guys loose. He gets them up for games and he makes the ballpark an enjoyable place for his mates. He is a leader by example. That doesn't necessarily translate into being a captain. With Varitek and Yaz, they were also leaders by example and Yaz was by all accounts a cut up and prankster. Neither one had the willingness to deliver a tough but needed message to his mates. If Pedroia is the Captain, I think he would be the same way.

Well we all seem to agree on that. This team doesn't need a captain. They are adept at picking each other up and helping their teammates without hesitation. Why gum up the works? It's working well the way it is right now and if it's not broken it doesn't need to be fixed. As I recall painfully we had Varitek as captain in September of 2011 who was acclaimed as a good leader. Yet he was powerless to do anything to stem the tide of disaster that engulfed the team. When you have a pack of *******s as we did then a captain does no good. When you have the kind of club we have now a captain isn't necessary.
