It probably has to do with options. Workman only just got his cup of coffee, but he also looks like a guy who will be in the majors permanently soon. So they'd prefer to send him down than a cusp player like Wright who might get shuffled around a bit more often.

Totally logical move. They sent him down for Wright because they figured they might need a reliever to go multiple innings after the 15-inning game. It worked out perfectly did it not?

Workman will be back shortly I'm sure.

They needed a roster slot for Peavy, and Workman is not available to pitch at all until Saturday after starting on Tuesday. After the 14 inning game, the Sox needed some bullpen options, and Workman was kind of a dead arm, per se, until Sat. I'd expect a phantom DL stint for someone about this time tomorrow so that Workman can get back up here and into the pen.

The Sox needed another arm in the pen after the marathon the other night and Wright served that purpose. He came up big by shutting the M's down for three innings. Probably see Workman back in 10 days to help the Sox in the pen or to replace Dempster in the rotation as I've heard that he has been dealing with a lingering injury.

The Sox have said as much, albeit in a much less revealing way. They love Workman and will have him back as soon as possible (10 days) to go into the pen or take Dempster's spot in the rotation.

also - let's be honest ... no ML team really uses AAA as a prospect level anymore. It's a parking lot for guys the big league team need - so Workman heading back down really has no significance aside from just roster usage. At least he's getting paid still - this isn't the Patriots cutting Ross Ventrone every single week like they did in 2011.

The kid did the job we needed. I don't think they will hesitate to bring him back for the pen in the near future.

Exactly. Workman was impressive, he knows it, and he knows the team knows it. We'll see him again.

I was under the impression that Workman is getting optioned to AAA and Wright got called up to provide us with long-inning relief (like last night). It is 10 days until we can call a player back up after being optioned down, correct? Well, after the time that elapses for Workman being able to get called back up to pitch in relief, we were going to do so. It is a smart move to allow us to bring up Wright to pitch immediately because Workman was not available out of the pen until Saturday. When the time is right, he will be back up.
