Sometimes you have to be the bigger man, not always the one on top tearing an *******. Sometimes you have to be able to receive as well and not complain too much.

How about Jarod Weaver? Think he is a good example of a Boras client signing an extension before hitting FA? Not nonsense at all. Look it up.

That'd be a great example if it hadn't been forced by Weaver against Boras' advice every step of the way. Look it up. Has Ellsbury shown that kind of interest in re-signing with the Red Sox? Dude wants his money.

Sorry User, but that's not the case at all. Boras was quoted as more than willing to step aside and let Weaver make that decision. It was amicable on both sides. The fallacy is that Boras is stubborn to the point that his charges following in step with what he proposes. That is not so. If a player want to make the decision on his own he is more than willing to let him do it . That was a big story out here when Weaver inked that new contract, and, BTW, Boras is a season ticket holder with the Angels and lives in Newport Beach, about four miles away f rom Angels Stadium.

As for Ells, we agree on that. He has shown no real interest in resigning with the Red Sox as I mentioned earlier. He wants a big payday.

Yeah i remember when Boras himself said that......in an attempt to save face. That's not what was reported before it happened. Otherwise we agree. And still, every rule has an exception.

Has Ellsbury said absolutely anything on the subject? I can't remember the last time he made any kind of public statement. The dude is just quiet. This is not like the situation with Papelbon where he straight-up said he planned to go to the highest bidder.

Henry mentioned that a deal probably won't get done, but its all up to Jacoby.

Don't you think his silence is an indication of his willingness to test the market? It is indeed all up to him, and when have you seen a report of Ellsbury ever reaching out to the Sox? If it walks like a duck....f*** that.....if it has Boras for an agent.....

I remember an interview in the clubhouse where he had a vodka bottle and he got teary eyed over how much he loves the Sox and wants to spend the rest of his life with them, but they barely know his name.

I ran through the last year of MLBTraderumors on JE. Every time anyone asks him about his contract, he says that Boras is in constant talks with the Red Sox FO, and if they put an offer in front of Boras, it would make its way to him. Everything that JE and Henry give the impression that Ellsbury simply isn't in the team's long term plans.

Not true at all. Pinkhats everywhere know the name of Dustin Ellsbury. Steals are sexy.

Yeah, that's because Boras is his agent, and they wanna test the market.

Or maybe its because John Henry doesn't like speedy left handed outfielders.

Carl Crawford was black, Jacoby Ellsbury is native American. We are in Boston...

C'mon, Boston's totally not racist. D&C haven't made fun of Metco kids in a few years now. We're good!

No doubt that Boras is a PITA but he is still obligated to show any offer to Ellsbury.

Ellsbury did make the first move and sent a clear signal to the Redsox. He fired his agent and hired Scott boras in 2007. Youk Pedroia Buccholz and Lester signed a contract to buy out there arbitration eligilbe years and sometimes a few more. Ellsbury was not interested. Also Scott Boras does not sign extensions in mid season, or really in any contract year. Ellsbury made the statement i love it in Boston, if they pay the most, which is fine that's his right.

Am I the only Sox fan that does not agree with the terms of the Pedroia extension? My thoughts are:

1. Why 7 years? I believe that management could have gotten a deal done on a 4 year extension and at worse 5 years. Think about this for a moment ... this 7 year extension takes Pedroia out to age 38. A 4 year extension takes him out to 35. No doubt that Peddy works hard every game, every at bat, he is a great leader, fielder, everything you want in a ballplayer but to think that his skill level will be the same at age 35, 36, 37, 38 as it is today is not realistic. Peddy loves Boston. Think about this ... If the Sox had given a 4 year extension and Peddy is still producing at a high level the Sox could then extend him out 2 years at a clip. Very similar to how the Sox have treated Ortiz.

2. What if? The Sox end up with a stud 2nd baseman down the road and Pedroia's production is down? This position is now blocked for 8-9 years.

3. The player that the Sox should be concentrating on is Ellsbury. When healthy Ellsbury is the most valuable everyday player the Sox have. The Sox would have been wise to get something done with Ells. 5 years at 14.28 per. just like Pedroia. It would be hard to pass up considering he has a history of injuries and knows that health is not guaranteed.

1. Industry practice these days - the contract will be a mild albatross in years 6-7. But if Pedroia can be a 3-6 win player for 4-5 years, it is a fair trade. He is a more valuable player than Ortiz, so treating him differently makes sense.

2. Cross that bridge when we get there. Pedroia's contract is pretty tradeable all things considered. You look at what Cano will get in free agency and this deal will become a screaming bargain. I mean, we locked up one of the more valuable players in baseball for the cost of a Ryan Dempster-level starting pitcher.

3. Ellsbury has had a wonderful season, and in 2011 he was one of the five best players in baseball. That said, his durability is a concern. But a bigger concern is that he will be 30 by September, and his bat is not valuable enough to say that he can maintain his value if he has to move to an outfield corner. I think a 4/5 year deal is possible still, but I think the Red Sox would be entirely justified in letting him walk and putting in Jackie Bradley full time.

Boras works for his clients and clearly does them well. Ellsbury will not give up his leverage, which is just good planning. He and the Red Sox have mutual reasons to end their relationship.

In my opinion sk7, Ellsbury is as good as gone. I wish we could resign him because as much as love Jackie Bradley I have some suspicions about his being able to hit ML pitching consistently, and he certainly isn't going to be the speed burner on the bases that Jacoby is. Still, we have to face reality and hope JB is more than up to it and become a stalwart for the Red Sox because Ells will fly the coop this winter.
