Ok here's the game, probably one that's been played here before. But take the best season for individual Red Sox players at each position - so the best season by a Sox' catcher, first baseman, second baseman, etc. And each player can only be used once. So you can't use a season for Yaz at LF and then again at 1b, or two Roger Clemens' seasons, etc. Here are the positions. I'm editing this as people plug in their choices.

Starters:

C - Carlton Fisk, 1977, .315/.402/.521/.922, 138 ops+, 26 hr, 102 rbi

1b - Jimmie Foxx, 1938, .349/.462/.704/1.166, 182 ops+, 50 hr, 175 rbi

2b - Bobby Doerr, 1944, .325/.399/.528/.927, 165 ops+, 15 hr, 81 rbi

3b - Wade Boggs, 1987, .363/.461/.588/1.049, 174 ops+, 24 hr, 89 rbi

SS - Nomar Garciaparra, 1999, .357/.418/.603/1.022, 153 ops+, 27 hr, 104 rbi, 14 sb

LF - Ted Williams, 1941, .406/.553/.735/1.287, 235 ops+, 37 hr, 120 rbi

CF - Tris Speaker, 1912, .383/.464/.567/1.031, 188 ops+, 10 hr, 90 rbi, 52 sb

RF - Dwight Evans, 1984, .295/.388/.532/.920, 147 ops+, 32 hr, 104 rbi, 121 r

Manager - Terry Francona, 2004 - 98-64, won the World Series

Since I came up with the thread, I get to fill the first slot. I'll go with my favorite all-time Red Sox player, Pedro Martinez, from the year 2000. Lots of incredible seasons to choose from, but it came down to 2000 and 1999 for me. Pretty equivalent seasons. 1999 featured more K's and a better W/L record, but 2000 had a better era, era+, and an unfathomably great whip. So 2000 it is.

PS - There's no DH, but you can have Ortiz be the CIF or U spot if you want.

Very torn between Nomar 99, Nomar 2000. I mean .372/.434/.599!!

In '99 he had the extra stolen bases, only 39 (!) K's and a SLG% over 600. That kinda won me over.

I don't have the stats to back me on this, but using the eye test I'm pretty sure Salty has struck out 39 times in one game at some point.

And you should just edit your original post rather than creating new posts every time you update. That way you'll have the updated version easy to find.

Ok, good idea. Is there a time frame that limits me to editing though? Usually you can only edit a post for a couple of hours after you post it, but I don't know how it works here. I'll give it a go.

2B- Bobby Doerr, 1944.

.399 OBP, .528 SLG, .927 OPS, 165 OPS+

RP- Paps, 2006.

.92 ERA, .77 WHIP. 5.77 K/BB, 517 ERA+

Manager- Tito, 2004. I don't think there's a debate to be had on this one.

You only get to pick one for now so others can fill in. Which of these three do you want to go with?

Oh s***, my bad. Me and my s***** reading comprehension. Give me Doerr, then. I'll leave the obvious ones on the board. Sorry about that.

This was a tough call, but I am going to go with the highest overall OPS+ when it comes to CF.

Tris Speaker (1912): 136 R, 222 H, 53 2B, 12 3B, 10 HR, 90 RBI, 52 SB, .383/.464/.567/.1031, 188 OPS+

Tough call over Lynn in '79 and Ellsbury in 2011.

No problem. I don't think I made that clear. I just want as many people to be able to participate as possible. If the spots aren't filled in a day, go ahead and submit another one.

I'll throw in another starting pitcher: Roger Clemens in 1986. 24-4, 2.48 era, 169 era+, 238 k, 0.97 whip, 8.4 k/9, plus a 20-k game vs. the Mariners thrown in for good measure.

Thanks for this very helpful contribution to the thread. <_>There are many books written about that season. It was extraordinary. It transcended statistics and revived a dying Boston Red Sox franchise. It was the greatest season.

A 1967 post pertinent to the thread:

Yaz' 67 season in RF:

.326/.418./622 1.040 OPS 193 OPS+, 44 HR, 121 RBI, 112 R

Incredible season, but Yaz didn't play RF in '67 or ever. He only played 7 games in RF his entire career consisting of 3228 games. He was the LF on that team, and someone already put Ted Williams' 1941 season up. I guess we could put Yaz' '67 season in a reserve OF slot. Wanna do that?

Yeah you're right, 1965 is the season where he played *some* RF. So i guess a reserve OF slot would be the solution.
