For the Red Sox:

Ryan Dempster, 2-2, 3.00 ERA

Since joining the Red Sox, Ryan Dempster has pitched much better than his W/L record might indicate, all while contending with a surname that almost certainly caused emotional anguish throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I'm sure by now he has been called "Dumpster" nearly as many times on this site as jackos' mom. Tonight, he has an excellent chance of going above .500 in the win column and dispelling all of that nonsense, and even if he doesn't, I'll ban anyone for a day who calls him "Dumpster" in the gamethread and delete their post, so no one will see it anyways and it will, for all intents and purposes, not exist. I intended to include my own personal observation of the starting pitchers' photograph as I did yesterday, so just to be consistent, I'll ask if anyone else thinks he looks a little like Kevin Youkilis if one of Kevin Youkilis' parents had not been a radioactive gorilla?

For the Twins:

Scott Diamond, 2-2, 3.97 ERA

Wow. I mean...just wow. Your last name is Diamond, and at no point did you consider changing your first name to Maxx or Lance and going into the porn business? What a waste. I suppose you could probably work in a few baseball diamond-related puns in the average game, if you were as phenomenally clever as I am, but still, seems like this guy really dropped the ball on this one. I suppose his terminal case of lopsidedeyeballitis may have nixed his sex career in the bud, though I wouldn't admit that either if I were him. I doubt the Sox will have any trouble with this guy, unless they are attempting to fit him for glasses.

So let's do this, boys. The day after a walk-off is always fraught with tension. Actually, no, it's usually normal, but how often do I get the chance to use the word "fraught"? My birthday is on Thursday and I goddamn well better be still making Gamethreads then.

Let's make sure the Minnesota newspapers' sports page tomorrow is a photo of this man with his head bowed, captioned "Diamond in the Rough".

Go Sox!

Fingers crossed, we had an ugly win last night but a win none the less. Lets hope we can keep it going. When this team starts to slide they really slide! Confidence is a huge issue with this team. With the Yanks and Baltimore right behind us, now is not a good time to lose game to mediocre teams.

Allen Webster in the house!!!!

Pleaseopleaseoplease be here to replace Doubront.

isn't here for Hanrahan?

and the team said Doubront is making his next start. I hope the Sox win in 5 inning after a rain delay. So sick of watching him pitch.

I was saying the same thing as well. Webster has to be in and Doubbie either can pitch 3-4 innings when the starter doesnt have it so we can preserve the bullpen or he can be on the DL and get fit for crying out loud.

Worst decision ever.

Websters floor is Doubronts ceiling (hyperbole noted). But seriously, why the hell are we going to watch this guy give us 5 crappy innings where he gets lit??

Pitch him in long relief while he gets his arm strength.

He's useless as a starter right now. You need a piggy back for him.

I imagine that Webster will be sent down immediately after his start unless Doubront does horribly again in his. I'd have thought that they'd bring up a reliever (Aceves?) now since they depleted the bullpen, and then push him down and bring up Webster for the start. Hopefully we don't need our pen much tonight.

I think it will be once and done for Webster unless he hurls an absolute gem.

Lets hope there is no save situation tonight. I trust Tazawa, but don't want to see him close unless he has to until Bailey comes back.

Why not? It'd be a huge boost to his confidence if he close out a game tonight, because how bad of a vibe it has been surrounding this club with the closing situations.

Also it appear Doubie is headed to the BP, and his starting spot is yet to be determined. He may have lost it because how taxing the BP is with him and Lackey been.

They just announce Doubront is push back to Thursday with Webby starting tomorrow. I would prefer Doubront DL or in the BP.

Now they're saying Webster to start for Doubront, who will throw out of the bullpen but will make his next start.

Sorry, but Webster hit 100 in his last start in Pawtucket, and has been nothing short of dominant. Don't say it's just a spot start because, lets be honest, he's probably the 3rd best pitcher on the team right now.

EDIT: that last paragraph is intended to the Sox FO, not you.

Until Webster grows a bit as a pitcher he may have great stuff compared to some of our other hurlers but he is not the third best pitcher.

And

The only way Felix can do long relief is with plenty of prep on the front end and plenty of rest on the back end. In other words, relief stints are going to have to be handled almost like starts.

I certainly think Webby is right up there with Dempster. You can certainly make a case that, the way Dempster is throwing the baseball right now, he's better than Webster. But you can also say that Dempster is throwing more like an excellent #2 right now than anything. But if I were to tell you that both Webster and Dempster were FA's right now, and you had to choose one or the other for this season and this season only, I think a lot of people would roll the dice with Webster because he's got a chance to be up there with Buch and Lester.

And if Webster throws like a solid number 2, that's an excellent #4 to be throwing out there.

I agree with that, but I don't think Webster qualifies.

He's very good, and will likely be even better, but he's not a finished product just yet.

Right, but saying he's better than Dempster going forward isn't a huge proclamation.

Lets not forget the opinions everyone had of Demp coming into this season. Given, he's substantially outperformed those expectations, but in a from-here-on sense, it's not at all unreasonable to say Webster is the better pitcher.

You didn't say "going forward." You said "right now."

It'd be great if this game won't take almost 5 hours to finish.

Don't worried, this isn't Doubront taking his sweet time between pitches.

Offense need to wake up though.
