9-4. Wow, what a start to the season.

Such a nice start. Hope it continues. There will be bumps along the way. Feeling very good at this point.

Sox are actually winning games that they would normally squander. Glad our closer is on the DL. Hope he can get his s*** together.

Good stuff. We can criticize Doubie for throwing too many balls, walking guys, driving up his pitch count, and not going deep into the game. But (at the risk of jinxing things) we still haven't had a starter implode this year, and that's a good thing.

Last year it definitely would have been the other team scoring more runs than they got hits. This year, it's us. I'll take it.

Wilson may stay longer. He has not done anything to warrant hitting the reject button and there may well turn out to be a spot for him before he does anything that gets him sent packing.

I hope once Papi returns we can score runs consistently, they won't hit the jackpot like tonight often. So far the offense is underwhelming. Pitching is solid still with a Houdini act here and there from Doubront.

BTR has some great mojo so far!!!

Great game tonight. Wasn't about the grind, just the result. The whole point was to distract the city of Boston and try to win, and they did just that. Congratulations.

Fun fact: Red Sox starters have yet to give up more than 3 ER in one start.

And yet we've had a reliever give up 5 runs in less than an inning! Huzzah!

The Indian terrible bp shutting this team down.

We have the best 8-9 combination in the business.

If only we had leads...

Does he still have options? Wright will be sent down before him, but it all depends on who gets healthy and when. With 4 pitchers on the DL, he could be sent down quick.

Recent days have shown pretty clearly that Bailey/Hanrahan is the best 8-9 combo in baseball.

Hey, Bailey got the win yesterday! The win, do you hear me? :)

Jimenez didn't have much of a start he was hoping for in 2013, we better take advantage of that 6.97 ERA early in the game.

Masterson (3-0, 0.41) tomorrow against Aceves (?) so let's go out there and get that win tonight.

That's it. :)

A great start to the series, hopefully we don't mess up the pitching too much tonight.

Ortiz targets Friday for debut

By an odd coincidence, Friday is also the day Ortiz will lose $2 million if he's still on the DL.

On the balls and strikes thing, I make this the second game of the year that's been decided by one call going one way or the other. In the Hanrahan blown save a called ball cost us a win. In this game a called ball led to a win for us. The pitch graphs say Ross was struck out by Jimenez in the second on pitch #5. Instead he got a walk. Then Ciriaco lined out to right for a sac fly. If that pitch had been called a strike, it's possible the Sox would have scored zero runs that inning instead of 7.

Modern technology and instant replay exposes how difficult umpiring is. Especially balls and strikes.

Umps miss the corners a lot. Also close calls on the basepaths and even trapped balls in the outfield.

The irony is it really isn't their fault. They are either out of position or can't react fast enough to make the call.

It's time that some of that technology seen by the viewers is shared with the umpires--to aid in their decision-making. They already do it to replay HRs down the foul lines, when necessary. Instant replay should be expanded to plays in the field. Even called strikes. I've seen too many playoff games affected by mistaken calls in the field.

How to do this? There are plenty of people paid a lot of money to figure it out.

Hanrahan?!?! No. He's not as good as first thought. Bailey only got the win because he pitched in the 9th. He also blew a save.

The best 8-9 combination has to be Darren O'Day and Jim Johnson of the Orioles only because the Yankees don't really have a setup man.
