He isn't going to be ready from an arm perspective until next yr. Maybe he becomes a pen piece, or maybe you sign him and he blows out his shoulder because he isn't throwing every other day, like he needs to be.

He's been throwing 2+ times a week for the last two months. He's probably ready from a conditioning perspective, it's a matter of how close he is from a developmental perspective. He seems like a guy who won't be ready developmentally until next year. By the time he gets his feet wet in the minors it will be September, and I don't think we're going to throw a guy in to the playoffs who has five major league starts.

That said, we'd be stupid not to try to sign him if he's close to major league ready. He supposedly had great stuff and he won't count against our international free agent signing money.

All these Cuban defectors really bum me out. Our two countries need to work together and end the trade embargo. It's a total anachronism in this day and age.

I don't care who they get--just get some pitching help. A guy who can start right away and another reliever. That would be a boost to a team that deserves it for what they've shown so far.

Absolutely, you have to try and sign him. I am just saying he is probably not your 2013 saviour

Considering earlier rumors had it at 40-50 I'm kind of ok to see him go somewhere else, especially Philly over a current playoff team. Although if he went to a team like Atlanta that would have taken one more buyer out of the market for a starter which might have changed the nature of the Peavy trade.

Phillies signed Gonzalez to a $50-60 million deal.

Lee could very well be traded now--to the Red Sox. The Red Sox were runnerups in getting Gonzalez.

Crap crap crap crap crap. I really wanted that guy and all he would have cost was $$, not prospects. And the Sox have plenty of $$.

But man, the Phillies just pile on the contracts.

They're getting a new TV contract soon, they could be the next Dodgers.

Then maybe they'll have the $$ to keep Lee.

They certainly don't need to trade him. We'd probably have to give up a legitimate prospect like Cecchini to even peak the Phillies interest.

I might consider that if the Sox didn't have to take on all of Lee's $25 million salary. The Phils would have to eat a good chunk of that in order for me (if I was the Sox' GM, which, obviously, I am not) to consider that.

I think the Sox will just kind of ride this out.

They're making big money in their new stadium. Doubt their TV deal will match the bigger markets. I think they'll re-sign Halladay for less money and may trade Lee for some hitting.

The Phillies will listen to offers on starting pitcher Cliff Lee, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports. It doesn't sound like GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is in any rush to move Lee, however. "Although we don't have any desire to move a guy like that because we view him as someone who will be key to our future, I am a businessperson as well and I'll be a good listener," Amaro says. There's another Lee-related story line to watch as we approach the trade deadline -- as Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes (via Twitter), Lee has been scratched from his start on Saturday due to a stiff neck.

If Cecchini is the best prospect going back I'd be interested. Not sure how any team avoids trading one of their top pitchers for Lee tho, and that would worry me. UN was saying Ranaudo's value is sky high, he might interest the Phillies, but if Ranaudo is pitching that good it's hard to want to trade him.

If we could center a deal around Cecchini and Ranaudo, I would do it in heartbeat. Both of their values are sky high, but Cecchini has questions about his ability to hit for power and his defense and Ranaudo has questions about his consistency and ability to stay healthy. Both players got off to scalding hot starts in the minors this year and have now started to cool off. They're both pretty close to being top 5 prospects in our system, but we would be selling high.

Here's why I'd be alright with not acquiring another starter.

2013 Rotation Stats - 3.84 ERA, 3.90 xFIP, 3.41 BB/9, 7.03 K/9, 1.14 HR/9, .290 BABIP

July Rotation Stats - 3.99 ERA, 4.11 xFIP, 2.81 BB/9, 7.40 K/9, 1.33 HR/9, .289 BABIP

Apparently the Cubs are listening in on Samardzija. Thoughts?

Still not someone I move the top guys for, but he would definitely be interesting.

I don't think the rotation is in trouble unless Buchholz is out for much longer or comes back a less dominant pitcher.

I see the Cubs are now shopping Jeff Samardzija. The guy has looked very good the couple of times I have seen him.

Samardzija would be at least the number two starter until Buchholz comes back. He is now what the Sox can only hope Allen Webster will one day be. It will take a lot so I'd would offer up a package that featured Webster. If it would take much more, I'd tell them to forget it. Edited by Spitball

Phillies Make Young Available, Not Cliff Lee

By Zach Links [July 28 at 11:46am CST]

The Phillies have reached out to other clubs to let them know that players, including MIchael Young, are available, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. However, coveted starter Cliff Lee is not among those players on the block.

Last week, GM Ruben Amaro admitted that he will be willing to listen on any player and couldn't definitively rule out trading anyone. That idea was underscored by sources telling Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com that the club would listen to offers on Lee, who would completely change the landscape of available starting pitching.

Young, who is hitting .277/.342/.402 with seven homers on the year, has drawn the interest of the Rangers, Red Sox, and Orioles. According to one report last night, however, Texas is not looking to reunite with Young before Wednesday's deadline.

The Phillies have a number of attractive pieces for contending clubs, including second baseman Chase Utley and closer Jonathan Papelbon. It's not clear if they are being made available in the coming days but if they are, it would mark a change in thinking for Amaro & Co. Amaro has publicly stated his desire to see Utley play out the remainder of his career in Philadelphia and has said that developing another closer of Papelbon's caliber would take time that the club doesn't have.
