I don't think there was anything lucky about it. We all complained because guys like Haren, Marcum and Mccarthy all had arguably higher ceilings, but he was also well-known to be the healthiest of the group. We'll see what happens, but the Dempster move makes more sense to me now than it did a few months ago.

I agree, 2013 was not a good free agent pitching market. I like using 2013 to watch pitchers that could very well be 2014 free agents, and see what they have left in the tank. That could be guys like....

Tim Lincecum

Matt Garza

Josh Johnson

Dan Haren

Roy Halliday

Bronson Arroyo

Bruce Chen

More likely lucky.

Farrell is the game changer.

We'll see what happens when Iggy and Bradley wind up in AAA.

Oh nonsense. ;) Ben and Cherries for Executive of the Year!!!

If you posted in this thread but made no predictions, GTFOH... seriously.

Why? People are off topic all the time in all kinds of threads.

Anyone who doesn't have the courage to make a prediction(s) shouldn't be weighing in to criticize those that made predictions. Just my opinion.

Not sure.

Guess I'll have to go back and read all 650+ posts and figure out who he's calling out? :dunno:

It's not like this was the only thread where predictions were made...

Sure, make my pet peeve into a research project. Take your time. That's what I was hoping for. Afterall, you must get to the bottom of this. Who was I targeting? Who was being called out? TalkSox readers demand answers.

I predict that Aceves will start Thursday......

Red Sox will start Aceves on Thursday

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 10, 2013 12:06 PM

The Red Sox announced today that Alfredo Aceves will start against the Orioles on Thursday night, not Felix Doubront.

Aceves has a 2.31 ERA in 25 career appearances against the Orioles, all in relief. He also has good statistics against their hitters.

Doubront will presumably be pushed back to face the Rays on Friday night in place of John Lackey. Doubront is 2-1, 3.91 in seven career appearances against the Rays, four of them starts. He was 2-0, 4.32 in three starts last season.

So for now, the rotation likely looks like this:

Wednesday vs. Baltimore: Ryan Dempster

Thursday vs. Baltimore: Alfredo Aceves

Friday vs. Tampa Bay: Felix Doubront

Saturday vs. Tampa Bay: Jon Lester

Sunday vs. Tampa Bay: Clay Buchholz

Monday vs. Tampa Bay: Dempster

So something goes wrong he's a dumbass and if it works out he's lucky? Jesus fred, do you even attempt to mask you loathing hard on for :D

Nope, I was actually praising him. He may be a lot smarter than I previously gave him credit for. You owe me one BSN.

Yes, but he said "or" very lucky. He didn't say which was the case. So, what is your point?

As for giving Cherries credit for anything, it is a little early for that being that we are a mere 7 games into the season. I think it is okay to reserve judgmebt on him at this point. If you want to nominate him for GM of the year 7 games into the season, go right ahead. I will wait to see how this plays out. I'll wait to see how our pitching depth options perform as the injuries happen and starts are missed, etc. before I pass judgment on Cherries performance.

You got it 700; BSN didn't, and I sent him a missive to let him know. Whether he believes it or not is mute. I intimated that maybe Cherington isn't that bad, might be better than I thought he was. We all misinterpret things on this board it seems. Maybe in his case he has gotten English mixed up with Flemish and Walloon. No harm done. I think BSN will understand, something a couple of others around here might never do.

I'll tell you what would make Cherington hit a bonanza. If Dempster works out as a solid No. 3 and Gomes and Drew make solid contributions. Then I think all of us would have to fall in line.

03-18-2013, 09:32 PM I predict they win 90 games. The pitching staff does a complete 180, everyone pitches to their abilities and career norms. Bullpen becomes a strength but Hanrahan struggles as closer.....losing Papelbon continues to haunt us.

.....until Uehara takes over as closer, and all is right with the world.

Two out un the 9th and nobody on and porky can't get that last damn out? Of course, when you only get five or six hits you know it is going to be a tough game. I felt like I got belted in the ribs with a 2-by-4 when that ball left the yard. Now all the comments and pokes at Aceves must cease because we really need him to step up tomorrow and I think he will. But we will have to hit better.

We hit fine.

We scored 5 runs.

Five runs are usually good enough to win; it wasn't tonight. But we didn't hit fine. We are capable of doing better and to give Aceves decent chance to win tomorrow we have to support him with some lusty hitting and we have to find a f***ing closer who can close. I don't know if you were a Papelbon supporter or not but most of the time he was like clockwork for us----and since he left it has been a nightmare in the ninth inning with some of these clowns we've tried in that spot. Someone has to take that job and get it done.

Tomorrow we come back and beat these bastards no matter what it takes.

Sucks he blew it, but he's known for giving up a few throughout the season. All my friends said the same exact thing about him, good closer, gets its done on most nights but will give you anxiety attacks because he will put guys on base and give up the occasional HR. So I'm going to hold off on panicking over him for now.

Sounds like just about every closer in Baseball. You can look it up. Pap, Soriano and Rodney have all blown saves this year. High ERAs. Motte's arm is wrecked after 2 seasons closing. Tough business, going out there night after night to win or lose a game.

Opposing hitters have an OBP of .146 vs. Papelbon this year.
