Goodbye David Ortiz. It was a fun ride. We will use the money and the DH position to become more flexible and younger.

It wasn't like we were going to compete for a WS title with him anyways, by the time we are ready to compete again....he will be ready to retire.

Lets just fast forward and get this over with. 25+ is too much on a 2 year deal, and 3 years is too long.

modest means small.

The word for today from Cafardo describing the difference in RS/DO negotiations is "vast".

vast means huge.

We just don't have anything to go on yet this offseason cause we have not seen any sign of a completed deal between the Sox and anybody yet. But trying to read between the lines, now it seems like whatever the difference is, it is greater than 2/$20 vs 2/$25 or as has been posted here, both positions have solidified to concrete with David figuring it is worth it to him to see if somebody will bridge that $5M gap for him in FA.

That might not work to his benefit though because of the Achilles. Nobody outside of the Sox is going to know anywhere near as much about that Achilles as David and the Sox know and while David would have to pass a physical after signing with somebody, I am not sure there is a team out there that will both bridge the gap for Ortiz and then take the risk.

Never underestimate the irrational optimism of major league baseball executives. Within the last year we saw 32-year old Pujols signed for 10 years at 24 million per. We saw the Dodgers take on the AGon and Crawford contracts. 25 million is not that much money to the Rangers, especially when their big left-handed bat seems headed elsewhere.

If he stays I will be happy to see him back. If they let him walk and collect a pick and use the DH position in other ways I'm ok with that too.

Ortiz has done too much for too long to be bitter if he wants to go join a Texas type team to take a another shot at a WS titles in his last couple years in the league. I'd rather he not sign with NYY though. That i would probably have a bad taste in my mouth until he retired :D

I hope they get this done within the hour. The boys of the front office need to get in touch with the Angels, and bring Haren to Boston before the night is out.

I would rather not see this get to the point where the Rangers are somehow involved, not because of anything about the Rangers but just because the Sox don't need another team right angling right into whatever they are trying to get done with Ortiz. Clearly the Sox want to get something done with Ortiz and I am OK with it. I am not OK with the price suddenly ballooning out of whack.

The pre-game crew announced it during the Celtics Comcast Sports Network pre-game show. The qualifying offer you mentioned was done earlier today as a protective measure.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. I would really like to see DO back in a Red Sox uniform next year.

Where did you hear this? I am seeing that the RS only offered one year/$13.3 million.

It's on espn.com now. Deal is done.

Ortizle is back in the DH slot and the Sox will be smiling when they find his replacement (potential hall of famer).. They need to find his twin in the future...don't make me find back to the future quotes..

P.S. I have mob connections and Marty will be the God Father

Papi gets his money. An easy deal for the FO. Now the real work starts.

I hear Ross is going to free agency. Maybe that signals a run at Hamilton.

You know damn well the Yankees will be in on Hamilton. It's a no brainer in Yankee Stadium.

It was the right move. Papi should retire as a Red Sox player. Then retire his number and put an official end to the Epstien/Francona years.

Papi should live on in Red Sox lore forever. Same with Theo and Tito.

Not sure passing on Ross suggests a move on Hamilton..might suggest a move to bring back Youk for a short term RH bat. Who the heck on the Sox is going to babysit Hamilton the way they have in Texas?

You almost have to treat Hamilton like a knuckleballer needing a specialized catcher for every game he pitches if not worse. What are the special "baseball" characteristics of a teammate who is going to stay inside Hamilton's drawers day and night in an effort to keep him on the straight and narrow.

I am not sure it makes sense to bring Hamilton to either New York or Boston.

We have not necessarily passed on Ross, we just did not offer him a qualifying offer. He seems upset that we did not get a deal done with him. That might influence his decision to go elsewhere. I think that we still have a pretty decent shot to resign Ross, but it solely depends on how much he wants. If we do not resign him, we sure as hell better sign or trade for two more decent OF's.

The Red Sox officially announced the deal. Ortiz will earn $14MM in 2013 and $11MM in 2014 with a $1MM signing bonus, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com

Ortiz is wasting no time firing back at Bobby V now that he has the contract signed.

Fresh off his new deal with the Red Sox, slugger David Ortiz fired back at former manager Bobby Valentine, who two weeks ago insinuated his designated hitter missed the latter part of the season not because of soreness from an Achilles injury but because his team was out of the playoff hunt.

"Stopping me (from playing) was the decision of the doctors, management, the manager and me," Ortiz told ESPNDeportes.com. "The team doctor recommended that I stop playing to not make the situation worse for the tendon.

"... As a player, the game runs through my veins. In the 10 years I have played in Boston, I have been the heart and soul of the organization and not a second has gone by in which David Ortiz, able to go on the field to do what he knows best, he stayed seated instead."

Ortiz was on the disabled list from July 18 to late August with a strained right Achilles. He went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a one-game return Aug. 24. The next day, the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to the Los Angeles Dodgers was made official. Ortiz went back on the DL on Aug. 27.

"He realized that this trade meant that we're not going to run this race and we're not even going to finish the race properly and he decided not to play anymore," Valentine said Oct. 23 in an interview on "Costas Tonight" on NBC Sports Network. "I think at that time it was all downhill from there."

The soon-to-be 37-year-old Ortiz emphatically denied that deal had anything to do with him missing the rest of the season and said he ignored a message from Valentine after the interview because he thought he was dealing with someone with "some mental issues."

"No. 1, never bite the hand that feeds you, because in the end that will come back to bite you," Ortiz said. "I was one of those players that always showed support for him. In fact, I held a couple of player meetings.

"No. 2, the day that I returned from the DL, I told him that I was not sure what percentage health-wise I was in, but that I could not be out there without trying to help. When I told him that, I put my career on the side to help him and the team. Being in an incredible amount of pain, I went out there to support them.

"No. 3, after he went on national TV to say what he said, he sent me a text message trying to tell me that it was the media trying to change things. I did not respond to the message and I said to myself, this guy must have some mental issues or needs medicine or something? I said, I am dealing with someone crazy and I am not going to drive myself crazy, so it is better if I leave it alone."

Ortiz said he is only speaking up about it now because he was focused on finalizing a two-year contract with the Red Sox.

"I am a player that has the game in his blood," he said. "In the 10 years that I have (been) in Boston, I have been the soul of the organization and there has never been a second where David Ortiz being able to go on the field and do what he does has decided to stay seated."

On Monday, the Red Sox officially announced Ortiz's return to the team. The veteran designated hitter will get a two-year deal worth at least $26 million, a source told ESPNBoston.com.

Ortiz, who made $14.575 million last season on a one-year deal, will make $14 million in 2013 and $11 million in 2014, and will get a $1 million signing bonus with performance incentives that could bring the total value to $30 million, according to a team source.

Regarding his new contract, Ortiz said that it is the best thing that could have happened to him at this stage in his career. It practically guarantees that he will not wear a uniform other than that of the Red Sox for the rest of his life.

"I feel happy and, on top of that, my mind is at ease because I won't have to move in the next two years. Over the coming two years, I will conclude a 17-year career; not many can accomplish that in this league," said Ortiz, who has had a .285 batting average with 401 home runs and 1,326 RBIs in 16 years with Minnesota and Boston.

I read Lucchino offered Papi's son, D'Angelo, a $5 contract.

I also heard Larry offered him the manager's job last year, but he turned him down. Smart kid.

He's gonna have to step back for awhile. No one is going to take hims seriously after last season. I doubt he will get another managing job. Maybe he makes it back to ESPN, but they may require a psyche evaluation first though, so he doesn't go all Ron Burgundy on the baseball tonight set :D

lmao, I think Bobby V is not going to have a managing job again after the s*** storm he caused in Boston. I backed him the entire year, but in reality I just did that to support our manager. That was a stupid mistake and I should have realized how lousy he is in terms of being negative towards our players.

I think this contract is fair for Papi and it will allow him to retire in Boston. I think this is a deal the FO had to do. I think Papi is still a productive hitter and for PR purposes it is a positive move.
