It looks like the deal was pretty modest. A solid middle infielder, top 100 prospect, a solid pitching prospect 20, and two relievers.

It looks like it would have been the equivalent of Barnes, Brentz, Wilson, and Britton, maybe a bit more. I still probably wouldn't have made that deal, but it isn't as crazy as some expected it to be.

Well now we can be sure that the DBacks are serious about trading him and that it is not just a charade.

idk it's odd KT focused in on the team Upton had over and over again stated he would not accept a trade to. Rangers are moving on say most recent reports. Atlanta would like to pair the Upton brothers up but seemingly don't match up. It's really an odd situation.

Agreed. It really sounds like Towers should have had all the signs that Upton wasn't going to Seattle. Not sure if he maybe thought that Upton would change his mind if a deal actually ended up in place or what, but it all seems pretty silly.

I can't imagine the relationship between team and player here is good at all at this point. It's clear that Arizona has always put a higher price on Upton than any potential trade partner. I wonder if this is one of those ones where they're eventually going to have to cut their losses and take less than what they wanted just to get rid of him.

Mets Showing Strong Interest In Brian Wilson

By Zach Links [January 13 at 10:03am CST]

The Mets are showing strong interest in former Giants closer Brian Wilson, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter). *Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson watched Wilson yesterday in a private workout.

Before the New Year we learned that Wilson narrowed down his list of suitors in half from about nine or ten to approximately five. *The Giants are open to a reunion but are only willing to give Wilson a deal with a low base salary and performance-based incentives. *The 30-year-old made only two appearances in 2012 before suffering a season-ending elbow injury.

Their end of game bullpen was pretty atrocious last year.

It was as bad as the rotation were. 2nd most blown saves in the league. Padilla, Melancon, Bailey and Aceves, none of them have ERA under 4.50

I was referring to the Mets. But yes, the Red sox late inning bullpen was also atrocious.

I thought you wanted Wilson on the Red Sox...nvm. Personally I would pass. We have too many 'air head' relievers. :D

I'm sort of surprised this is the first team we're really hearing about with that kind of interest in him. Even with two TJ surgery's, it seems like with everything that happened last year with closers and everything more people would be interested.

They have a powerhouse starting staff and bullpen. Their hitting is pretty good too. They will be a force again in 2013.

Cue the second draft pick to the Yankees. Makes me happy. Soriano wouldnt be that big of an upgrade on our team since he'd be relegated to the 7th inning if Mo is healthy. But his departure clears $13 mil in salary and gets us a $1.3 mil pick in the draft with which to play with

Soriano

Clippard

Storen

Garcia

Nats must love ex-Yankees. They're probably rock hard for Boone Logan.

Geez how quickly that team got built by scoring two of the best draft choices in a decade. There's other moves too, like acquiring Gonzalez. And Zimmermann emerging as one of the best pitcher.

Padilla just signed in Japan. Wow didn't see that coming. With his K/9 I figured someone would put him in their BP.

Japanese teams have been able to deal out contracts in the low millions this year, and pulling low-to-mid tier talent back to Japan. I doubt anyone would have paid 3.5 million for Padilla in the states.

Glad he didn't end up back here with us. Padilla is the kind of guy I feel that in the past we would have tried to continue onward with, and he'd end up finally falling apart mid-season. Glad to see that didn't happen.

Agreed that he probably wouldn't been able to have made that much here, but it's still a little surprising to me. Seems like a team here would have been able to give him a decent offer that would make it worth staying here too.

Either way, we're away from him now too.

Pirates, Garrett Jones Avoid Arbitration

By Mike Axisa [January 19, 2013 at 8:54am CST]

The Pirates and Garrett Jones have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $4.5MM, reports the AP (via ESPN). The SFX client was projected to receive $4.4MM by Matt Swartz.

Jones, 31, hit .274/.317/.516 with 27 homers in 515 plate appearances last season, most of which he spent batting cleanup behind Andrew McCutchen. The left-handed hitter posted a .289/.332/.556 line with 25 homers against right-handers in 2012 and has been targeted in trades by several teams in the last 18 months or so. Jones was arbitration-eligible for the second time as a Super Two, meaning he's still under team control for both 2014 and 2015 as well.

Pittsburgh has two remaining arbitration-eligible players: James McDonald and Neil Walker. Both submitted salary figures yesterday, as our Arbitration Tracker shows.

I have given up hope of getting Jones. This guy is a tremendous value. We pay Salty the same amount and he sucks in comparison. This guy is every bit as tall as Salty too.

Yeah, don't really see it happening and it's kind of too bad. That 1B/OF would have been a good fit. Don't really see anyway they'd get him now with the Napoli signing. Not sure why they're so set on the left field situation but they do seem to be okay with the platoon there.

Marcum signs with the mets for 1 yr. I don't get why the sox weren't in on this one. Pillow contracts to rebuild value are their MO.

This is a big miss for the Red Sox. There was exactly one player available who was proven to perform at high level in the AL East, and they whiffed on him for a one year deal. Epic fail.

Posted
I don't think they "whiffed" because that would have entailed them being in on the guy, and they weren't from all indications, which is even more perplexing given the state of their rotation.

We should've signed Placente Padilla. (See what I did there?)

By the sound of it, they looked into him, but when they picked up Dempster, they stopped.

C'mon, at least reserve "epic fail" for something of importance. Adding a better option at the bottom of the rotation does not put them over the top. Marcum would've been a nice addition, but it's not like that move would make them a contender.

I disagree. Your pen is rounding into form. Your offense will take a step back, but will still be top 10 in the game. Your starting rotation was the death of your team last yr. Marcum showed he was healthy at yrs end, and he has a history of durability and success in the AL East. He'd have been a contender for the #5 spot and likely would have moved Lackey to the swing role. Counting on John Lackey to be your lynchpin in the rotation will likely lead to total disaster. Right now, the rotation involves...

1. Lester- fell apart last yr, needs to rebound

2. Buchholz- started poorly, lost time due to illness, finished strong

3. Dempster- dominated the NL Central, got tits lit in ALW, now who knows in ALE?

4. Doubront- up and down rookie yr with flashes of dominance. Can he take next step?

5. Lackey- worst pitcher in red sox history then got TJS. What are you expecting here?

Those are 5 wild cards. Who's the #6 you will inevitably need? Marcum would have at least tempered the situation and allowed you to go in with 3 guys fighting for 2 spots and also given you some depth when the inevitable happens.
