The Angels are getting close to a deal with Josh Hamilton, Yahoo's Tim Brown reports (on Twitter). The deal with the Moye Sports Associates client is not quite done, Brown adds. Joe McDonnell of FoxSportsWest.com first reported that the Angels were involved in serious talks with Hamilton

Those LA teams will be on paper the front runners to win their divisions and likely their respective leagues IMO.

At this point West Coast>East Coast

Wow... LAA have Weaver, Wilson, Pujols, Hamilton, Trout, etc... Unbelievable!

IMO they are the best team in the majors right now.

Is it just me, or does the whole American League look weaker?

The Yankees brought back the old gang, but one year older. Jeter/Rivera/Arod will be dealing with injuries among others. Martin is gone. Soriano/Swisher are likely gone. The farm system looks nothing like it did this time last year.

The Rangers lost Hamilton, Napoli, Young. They added Soria but they lost quite a few bullpen pieces.

The Tigers look good again this year, and the Angels could be scary good if they find pitchers to replace Haren/Santana/Greinke but it feel like talent is spread out between teams right now.

Also agreeing. It's interesting seeing baseball shift like this. The Yankees not being the most expensive team in the game anymore, and the West Coast spending so much money. The Giants, Dodgers, and Nationals certainly look good. The Braves should never really be counted out. Should be a pretty interesting year, I'm sort of looking forward to it as a baseball fan in general. Wish we were looking better, but there should certainly be some fun series to watch this year.

Dickey is heading to the Jays pending medicals. No specifics yet, but a package highlighted by Travis D'Arnaud is heading to the Mets. The Jays have added Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, and RA Dickey to the rotation while adding Jose Reyes on the offensive end. They're gonna be a good team in 2013

Good for the Jays though. Their fans have been waiting a long time to contend and they're not all jackasses either. I saw it could be TDA and Gose for Dickey and maybe something else. i wonder if the Jays try and go after a RP now. Maybe Joel Hanrahan

At this point, it is probably wasted money for the Sox to add payroll. Their is not enough talent still available for us to be competitive in our own division. Rebuild. I'd say that Ben missed the boat this off season, but I think he missed several boats.

Thing is, did he have a shot and if he did, would it have been worth it. The Jays had a ton of money to burn and the willingness to absorb bad contracts. That willingness got them the overpriced Reyes and Buerhle. Johnson was the prize there. For the Mets deal, they have d'Arnaud, the best catching prospect in baseball, for a team that is truly in rebuild mode and to net a guy like this would be a huge boon. Dickey is a get for a team who knows they need to win within the next 2 seasons. The sox arent that team anymore.

The biggest peril to bringing RA Dickey to the American League East isn't just that the hitters are complete beasts.

The entire division has seen Wakefield 4-5 times a year for the last seventeen years. The knuckleball can be unhittable on certain days, but this division knows exactly what to expect for the others.

The ALE is not the beast of a division any more. The ALW kicked the crap out of the East last year.

So Toronto is negotiating an extension for Dickey, and word is he might not give the same 2/25M deal he was talking with the Mets. Could get pushed to 15M AAV for the extension. This is such an awful move for the Blue Jays. Giving up top talent and paying a 38 year old lot of money. They are really all in at this point.

They need to win back their fan base. Remember 20 yrs ago they were the highest drawing team in baseball.

I know. But they are putting a lot of hope into a Knuckleballer. I have a hard time believing he's the final piece to a Championship.

But saying that, the AL East is as wide open as it has been in recent memory.

Contract negotiations between R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays "have ended successfully at an affordable rate," Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports. The Blue Jays will examine the knuckleballer at their Spring Training site before making an announcement, according to Griffin.

Well, they are officially the front runners in the ALE

Dickey has dominated the NL however. It's a risky gamble, but it's well worth it especially after the Miami trade.

Dickey

Johnson

Buehrle

Romero

Morrow

Sick.

I'd rather have TB pitching staff. Dickey is an auto ? coming from the NL and not even having to consider he's 38, a KB'er(who is on a 3 year peak, how long do those last for KB pitchers?). Johnson is health issue. He's shown flashes of being an ace, but I view him as more of a Burnett-Beckett type. He's gonna be good, and he's gonna be bad. Buehrle is a soft tossing LHP. He's a good smart vet, but if one of the first 2 stumble, counting on him as a # 2 or higher is a big stretch IMO. Romero was absolutely terrible last season. I'm thankful he is still in the rotation, I see that as a plus for the rest of the division. Morrow has about the highest upside of them all IMO. He's got big boy stuff but hasn't put it all together yet.

Astros Designate Che-Hsuan Lin For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 19 at 4:02pm CST]

The Astros announced that they designated outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin for assignment (Twitter link). The move creates roster space for recently-acquired right-hander John Ely.

The Astros claimed Lin off of waivers from the Red Sox in October. The 24-year-old made his MLB debut this past season, appearing in nine games as a center fielder and right fielder.
