Buster Olney reports that the Yankees are getting a 7-8 million dollar settlement for the Texeira injury. Once again, baseball bending over backwards for the Yanks.

As I am reading more on this, there is a possible Upside. From the sounds of it, the angels will pay nearly nothing this year, with them paying over the amount that he is owed next year. This will allow the Yankees to earn a credit towards the 2014 season. If that is the case that it may be a method to manipulate the salary-cap To be able to sign another player.

I could get that if he was LHH. And where was this money earlier in the off season? They could have picked up a decent OF for 2/12-13M. They pinch their pennies and then splurge on Wells? It's just weird imo.

Well, I can understand that the Yankees feel a little desperate right now. Of the 9 players that were in their starting lineup on Opening Day 2012, they will have 2 in the lineup on Opening Day 2013. That's pretty incredible.

It's not just the Yankees, any ML player hurt during the WBC salary will be covered by the WBC. The Dodgers are collecting on Ramirez as well.

This seems like an old style Yankees "name" grab. The only difference in Wells and probably the 20 OF that will be available before opening day its you know his name.

Jacko do they really have no OF prospects that have some measure of upside that could have taken this spot? I know they have some young OF's low in the minors but they must have 1 or 2 guys in AAA that of some measure of upside? I mean for the Sox I'd rather see Nava start then trade for Wells.

BSN, I'm boggled by this move. Our best prospects are OFers, but only Tyler Austin has seen time in AA (really a cup of coffee). We dealt away Abraham Almonte, whose upside was huge but couldn't stay healthy. Then we have guys like Zoilo Almonte and Melky Mesa, two guys who look like 4th OFers long term. But the last 2 are athletic, play good D and have above average power, so in not sure why they didn't try to roll with them. Wells hasn't been good since 2010, and since he went to ANA, he's been abysmal. Now, I understand that our park is conducive to some guys showing improvement, but that's typically for lefties rather than righties. This seems like a panicked move, one that didn't have to be made right now, especially since the Halos have been kicking around the idea of releasing Wells for the past year or so.

lol I know the deal is f'd up when you're not even trying to put a positive spin on it :D Is this a Cashman move or do you think the panic came from the next pay grade up?

rofl  it really does seem like a "the cat is away, the mice will play" type move

I still dont get the idea of throwing $12-$14 million away for this season to save $2 mil next yr. It doesnt sound financially responsible

Let the money burn haha. It's a shame this money could of been spent on something more useful like warm clothes for the homeless, education for african americans, or maybe a 3B... hmm

Yanks just signed Overbay. Funny, some might say he's the superior player

That's a good move for them. They need depth at first with Tex out, even if Overbay only has a minor league contract.

The amount of injuries the $pankees are going through makes the age of their ball club seem that much older. If their pitching struggles its going to be a long year in the Bronx because they aren't winning games 10-8 this year.

idk I get the feeling Either will be a Yankee before long. Dodgers got that kid Puig that's ready to break onto the big league club. No one is taking Crawford and they aren't trading Kemp. SO while they may be down this season, I expect them to reload rather quickly.

Ethier could put up monster numbers at that bandbox.
