The Sox are 5.5 games back with 5 teams ahead of us. It looks really bad just looking at that stat. That tells you the Sox won't make the playoffs. But the schedule says other wise. For a while we have not been playing any teams in the wild card standings, so when we win we either don't gain ground or gain a 1/2 game. However, things are changing, we are going into a 3 game set vs the Orioles (2nd wild card leader, 5.5 ahead of us). Then 3 games against the Yanks, hopefully we can squeeze out at least one win against them. Then we play the Angels (2 games back, 3.5 ahead of us) 6 times before the month is over, 3 at home, 3 on the road with the Royals sandwiched in the middle. Then we play 3 against the A's (.5 game back, 5 ahead of us). Then we play 3 against the Mariners. After that, the final 24 games are against the AL east. The 24 includes 6 against the Jays, 6 against the Yanks, 6 against the Rays (1st wild card leader, 6 games ahead of us), and another 6 against the orioles. If the Red Sox want it, they have to start against Baltimore on Tuesday.

The schedue is in place, now ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS WIN!!!!!!

And yes, I know I am probably just a dreamer and I have let my optimism get the best of me. BUT A TRUE FAN NEVER GIVES UP ON THEIR TEAM!!

The schedue is in place, now ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS WIN JUST ABOUT EVERY SINGLE GAME!!!!!!

^ This correction puts the situation into better perspective.

Well, they are trailing 5 teams in the wild card race. They have to beat out 4 of those teams. To do so the Red Sox would have to get incredibly hot and hope 4 teams get very cold.

It sounds unlikely, but I'm want to be optimistic. I won't give up on them until they are eliminated.

The Sox have to go something like 32-14 to get in. They have my best wishes but good luck with those numbers.

Giving up on a team has nothing to do with thinking they don't have a chance to get to the playoffs. You can love the Sox while thinking they might not be good enough this year...

I BELIEVE.. the chances are very miniscule. but I want to reverse what happened last year and for that the team needs to basically go on a tear, and it boils down to starting pitching and winning games on a stretch not 2 out of 4 and 1 out of 3 and loosing to the Twins for crying out loud.

they need to play collectively as a team and not as individuals.

They have not given us any evidence that they can rattle of something like 32-14. They have not gotten close to a run like that and I do not cobble together a scenario where they do it now either. We can always hope but I think hope is all we really have at this point.

thats all i am clinging too as well. realistically they are not making it unless they play as a team.

Yea I should have mentioned agreeing with you on that point as well. They do not win many of the games that reside between pitchers duals and slugfests. You have to be able to do something besides mash in many of those kinds of games. That does require more team play than they have shown this year.

V has started to comment about their inability to draw walks and not waiting for pitches they can do something with. You rarely ever see a Sox hitter spoiling pitches which this team used to do regularly. Not this Sox team.

Not meaning to distract attention from the starting pitching which is the main problem this team has but its inability to score a run when the really need it rather than score 14, 6 of which might actually meant something to the game they are playing is maddening and part and parcel of their lack of a team offensive concept.

With us losing or splitting series after series against teams like the Guardians, Mariners, Jays, , we have no chance. I love my Sox as much as the next guy, but being realistic, I know out playoff chances are slim to nil.

If we were to somehow get in, we'd be eliminated very quickly. The problem with this, is the FO will see it as a successful season, and do nothing this offseason. We need to miss the playoffs again to see change.

The Red Sox are very fortunate to be only 5.5 games out of a WC spot at this point. It's indicative of a high degree of parity in the league this year. That's what's keeping them on life support.

So no, we're not dead yet. And if Josh Beckett could turn things around...

Yeah, that did feel a little ridiculous typing that last sentence.

Enough with this "BELIEVE" rhetoric. The Red Sox suck this year and nothing is going to save them from themselves.

If any of you remember 1989 yeah, this is like 1989 - BUT WORSE.

Waaaaaahhhh! Waaaaaaahhhh!

Just heard on the Big O show on WEEI that if the Red Sox dont sweep Baltimore they are pretty much done in trying to get a wild card slot.

Maybe they actually can so the reverse 2011, but by god they have wasted so many chances this season to get something good going under far more favorable conditions (like having a Bit of momentum and not as much pressure).

That 2nd Wildcard certainly is a tease, and I really can't decide if I actually like it. I doubt it will happen, but on paper it is not over at all.

That's the year I was born. :P
