Youkilis activated, playing first; Gonzalez in right field

Posted by Scott Lauber at 2:47 pm

BALTIMORE — One day after indicating they would consider using Adrian Gonzalez in right field in order to get both Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks in the lineup simultaneously, that’s exactly what the Red Sox are doing.

Youkilis has been activated from the disabled list and will start at first base tonight against the Orioles. Gonzalez will play right field, something he did in back-to-back games over the weekend in Philadelphia and a move the Red Sox will consider when they play in outfields that aren’t overly expansive, like here at Camden Yards. And Middlebrooks will remain at third base.

Also, outfielder Scott Podsednik has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox haven’t announced corresponding moves, but it seems likely outfielders Cody Ross (left foot fracture) and Ryan Sweeney (concussion) will go on the disabled list. Neither were available to play last night. The Red Sox also will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Podsednik.

Spear is a 0 tool player.

The same amount of tools Pods hads right now, except Spears can play IF and OF.

I like everything except bringing Pods up. Why not Spears or Hassan?

Because Podsednik is a much funnier sounding name. Although I suppose I will lament the lack of opportunity for "Hassan CHOP!" jokes.

This offense can score some runs. Look at that 2-7 (I'm including Salty since he's hot right now). Heck, Aviles is no slouch right now, either. Now... imagine replacing Nava and Byrd with Crawdad and Ellsbury.

I need a cold shower.

Podsednik can be a leadoff hitter for this team. He's got a .371 OBP in Pawtucket right now, albeit in a small sample. But regardless, he can bunt for a hit, take a walk, slap a few, and swipe some bags and get into scoring position.

Looks like another bullpen night. Not like they're depleted or anything.

Who do we have tonight? Atchison, Albers?

His pitch is always high, and he pitch behind Buchholz, then Bard. Pen killer.

That sounds not good.

Has anyone noticed that when Byrd makes a catch, he quickly takes off his glove and puts it in his other hand?
