This makes no sense. They didn't pick up a team option, what's the big deal.

In 2008, he was voted 3rd in the MVP. Was it a ridiculous contract then?

In 2008 he may have been 3rd in MVP...so they paid him for a long conract based on that play. He did not hold up.

I am struggling with this tread a bit. Do we think $13M is to much at this point....I guess I would agree with that.

Considering the Sox have not made a move to secure Ross, I really don't know what to think about what they want to do at this point. I would have thought that Ross would not have been terribly costly and a guy they would have wanted to bring back for a couple years. Maybe they really really want to clean house in which case I would not expect the Sox to have any interest in Youk. However now I am wondering who is going to be on this team next year besides Pedey, Middlebrooks, Lackey and maybe Ells.

You still haven't explained how it was ridiculously big.

HMMM.... He didn't give them value for their money in 2012....came to the game unprepared "physically and mentally". ;)

cnnsi is speculating that maybe the Red Sox will want Youkilis back. Here are his numbers for Chicago this past season:

.236/.346/.425/.771, 106 ops+, 15 hr, 46 rbi in 292 ab

What's that worth? His bWAR was 0.5 (for his entire season), and at about $6 million per win, that means he was worth about $3 million last year. His numbers with the White Sox make him worth a little more.

So what would I pay him at this point if I was the Red Sox considering bringing him back to play 1b? Well, maybe something in the $4-5 million range, for one year. If he doesn't live up to it, oh well, it's not a huge loss of money. If he does, then terrific.

Well I meant ridiculously big for us.

We did not do ARod and while I don't think whatever number we flopped out on the table ever got any exposure clearly it was lower than what the Yanks offered him.

In fact, even Cashman did not do ARod's ten year deal. Cashman was willing to see ARod walk. The big crybaby whined to ownership and they were dumb enough to listen. Now they are stuck paying a guy who PED's his way to performance numbers $30M per even though he is now basically done.

The Crawford contract should forever change our perceptions of "ridiculously big".

I wonder if the Front Office had enough of these problems....Crawford, AGon, as well as a couple of the easily wounded Red Sox regulars. IS that why they were so careful NOT to go more than one year with Ortiz???>

I don't know about Youk....I am so surprised that they did not at least take a run at Ross that I would also not be surprised if they just did not want Youk back. We might be about to witness the biggest departure in Sox player personnel decision making that we have seen in a long time. So far we are just seeing the things they did not do. I guess we will have to see them do something in order to get some idea on direction with regard to players.

Obviously Youk would still be here if it weren't for the wonderful BV. Best wishes to him and I hope he isn't really in a decline.

I don't think that is true. Youk would still be here if and only if they pulled off the big trade before they dealt Youk. The problem was Youk or Middlebrooks because A-Gon was playing first. If A-Gon had been traded first there would have been no issue of Youk not playing. He would have played first. The Youk could and would have worked through the BV issue just like everyother played did.

Yeah, Bobby V had nothing to do with the Youk trade....disagree. When V called him out, he was wrong. The Old School Management style doesn't work anymore. I understand about Middlebrooks and Gonzalez. Youk definitely could have worked through the Bobby fiasco but as he shouldn't have, he did not. Like I said, I wish him well and don't think the Red Sox want him back. Just really glad Bobby V is gone. Bobby V's prescence only contibuted to the complete failure 2012 Red Sox season. Larry L was wrong.

Youk's day were numbered with Boston Red Sox as long as both Middlebrooks and A-Gon were healthy and with the team. Now that A-Gon is gone the dynamics have changed. The BV -Youk apparent contretemps was not the reason Youk was traded despite what the BV haters may think. He was traded because there was no place for him to play at the time. He may come back. but I hope not. There are better alternatives out there.

Youk is actually the kind of 1 yr stop gap player you'd be looking for at 1b, IMO. But with his feelings hurt the way they were, I doubt he'd even consider it

A couple of million dollars and MLB roster slot sure cures a lot of hurt feelings, unless you're David Ortiz of course

rather just not go there. He could still hit 20-25HR in a FULL season, which last time was 2009. He could be a 1B/DH for the Rays/Orioles. But I can't see him in Boston.

Guardians release Daisuke Matsuzaka

Aaron Gleeman

Aug 20, 2013, 11:51 AM EDT

Daisuke Matsuzaka was in the mix for a spot in the Guardians’ rotation during spring training, but eventually lost that competition to Scott Kazmir and has spent the entire season at Triple-A.

Today the Guardians released Matsuzaka after he started 19 games with a 3.92 ERA and 95/39 K/BB ratio in 103 innings for Columbus. Those are decent enough numbers and Matsuzaka had been on a nice run of late before struggling yesterday. Since the All-Star break he posted a 3.13 ERA and 36/9 K/BB ratio in 46 innings.

It looks like the end of the road for him in the US. Edited by a700hitter

I still can't figure out why he didn't go back to Japan this year. His MLB career seemed over, and he hated being here. Might as well go back home.

He's just 32 - he should be able to pitch back in Japan just fine, I would think.

I couldn't care less where he pitches so long as it ain't here.

I'm with you, believe me. Though he was ok for a couple of years here. Let's not forget he was a key guy in the rotation when they won a World Series.

Wherever he pitches - rest assured his innings will take a while ... he was effective with us for a few years and I never underestimate the culture clash that a guy like him has to face. But was he ever agonizing to watch - good enough stuff to come right at guys but stubbornly unwilling to do so.
