Heard on another team's broadcast Mo was taken off the field on a cart. Knee. No other details. Figured since it was Mo, it was probably worth its own thread.

Rivera always wanted to be a CF, so he shags fly balls hoping to "play a game in center before he retired". Looks like that ain't happening now.

Riv must be on suicide watch by now.

I've consulted the chart and Mo should be ready to return by the All-Star break with no rehab necessary.

It was a privilege to watch him play, but I'll be glad when he is done. Once he is done, it will become quickly evident that he was the main reason for the Yankees consistent playoff appearances.

The Yankees are having some s***** luck of their own this year.

So are the Rays with Farnsworth and their best player, Longoria, on the shelf already.

My grandmother played for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. She hit 10 home runs-- all of which grand slams-- and stole 30 bags. The Rays seem to flourish without stars.

Thanks, in part, to a very strong bullpen. This year, their bullpen is the very opposite of strong.

Their bullpen especially, flourishes without stars. And if not, they'll bring up five of their elite pitchers in the minors and make it work. We've been saying the Rays are due to regress for years now, and for some reason, their chemistry is magic. I get the feeling Tampa is winning the division this year.

Their two "elite pitchers from the minors" are in the rotation. There's a difference between flourishing without stars with players who have talent, and having talentless hacks. It hasn't been magic, but rather good coaching and roster construction, but that can only take you so far. If they win the division this year, it certainly will be in spite, and not because of, their bullpen.

I just googled it, and sure enough, two of the their top five prospects are AAA pitchers, Torres and Archer. I'd bet they turn into quality setup men before the end of the year.

Torn ACL is the preliminary diagnosis. Out for the season. Bad news for the Yanks, great news for the Sox and everyone else in the division.

Can't say I'm sad... that said, I have a ton of respect for Rivera and I really hope he's not done for good. Hate to see his career end like that.

That could be it for his career, honestly. We all know that's possible here. It's a long road back for someone at his age who was thinking about retiring soon anyway.

Not how anyone envisioned this happening I'm sure.

Here is the article by Abraham:

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

I don't remember the year, but I remember it was in Minnesota at the Metrodome.

As was his daily custom, Mariano Rivera was shagging flies in the outfield during batting practice. Running from gap to gap, he looked like a major league outfielder, not a relief pitcher.

Alex Rodriguez was in the cage and three times in a row he drove balls to the wall in center field and three times in a row Rivera made unbelievable catches, leaping up and grabbing the ball before it cleared the fence.

The third catch was as good as any you would ever see and A-Rod laughed out loud. As he walked out of the cage, he gave Mariano a "I'm not worthy" bow with both hands. You could see Rivera's smile from there.

Some pitchers get their conditioning work in on a treadmill or by running from foul pole to foul pole. Mariano shags flies, always has. It must work, too. The man hasn't been on the disabled list since 2003.

Rivera later told a few of the beat writers that he hoped to play the outfield for at least one inning before he retired but knew that was impossible because of the risk of injury and his immense value as a pitcher.

Now we learn tonight that Rivera injured his right knee while trying to make a leaping catch in the outfield during batting practice in Kansas City. He has a torn ACL and is done for the season.

Obviously this is major news in baseball and particularly for the AL East. It's hard to imagine the Yankees without Rivera.

Plenty of people hate the Yankees, but Rivera has earned respect even in Boston. He transcends the rivalry in a way few have.

Rivera is one of the best people in baseball and is nearing the end of a remarkable career, having hinted in spring training that he planned to retire. He deserves to go out throwing that cutter, not on the disabled list.

Here's hoping we get to see to see him pitch again.

I'm watching ESPNDeportes and they are saying that he is done for the rest of the season.

Unbelievable.. If he planned on retiring at the end of the year, does he postpone it and come back for 2013? I'm watch his interview and he's in tears. Even tho he is a Yankee, he's one of my favorite players, and I'll miss him

It was a very on-the-surface google search. Archer has command problems, and is coming off his worst season as a professional, also, neither him nor Torres are near the level Moore, Hellickson and Price were a couple years ago. Besides, two good arms likely wouldn't fix everything that ails that BP.

I feel a bit terrible saying this, but Rivera is a player for the New York Yankees. A team I hate. He is the best closer of all time. He has seen lots of success. Yes, he is a class act. He is also 42 years old. 42. Most players who do what he does were gone 7 years prior to being his age. Gonezo, kaput, seeeya.

Mo has 5 World Series rings. He is a multi, multi, multi-millionaire. He is a critical piece of the puzzle for our chief rival in the league that we have decades of history with, the majority of which are riddled with strife.

It is a given that Mariano is a class act. I never root for injuries. But by God, the Red Sox and all Boston teams and other teams have suffered with devastating injuries year after year, season after season, affecting players that may or may not be far better people, in reality, than Mo Rivera.

I congratulate Mo on a historic career and wish him well in his recovery. And if he comes back in any way, shape or form, I will be the first applauding and commemorating his valiant response to this.

But if I never see Mariano Rivera pitch again, it will not faze me in the least.

Am I the only person on the planet who feels this way? Jesus Christ. Somewhere, Keith Foulke is saying:

Red Sox Nation, remember me?

FTY.

No way 42-year-old comes back to keep pitching. He's gotta retire of this.

Sad to see any player go down w/injury. Boston Rivals are dropping like flies: Suggs-out, Mariano-out. Who next? Peyton Manning (officially)?

Our closer in college tore his ACL in his right knee. He was right handed and returned in 4 months. He was a stretch only thrower and his stuff didn't suffer. Problem was, he couldn't do a lot of fielding so teams bunted on him a fair amount. I doubt Mo could do it, but he said he's gonna try to get back this season. That tells me this is definitely his last yr.

That kid wasn't even half Mo's age. My gut tells me this is the end of Rivera as a premier closer.

I've been waiting 15 years for this guy to leave the Yankees. That said, I'm genuinely sorry for your loss.

Rivera is a class act an an all-time great. He had to go sometime, but I honestly hope he isn't done, because the league and the sport will lose something when he's gone for good.

Mo getting emotional.. never seen that happen.. as much as i hate them yankees i would never think i would say this but i didnt feel good watching his interview esp when he said he let his team down..

It has been said numerous times (including by me) but that guy is a f***ing class act. His quiet leadership over the years in such a big market makes that obvious, but his first concern is the well-being of the team even when his body has broken down on him.

They could put him in the Hall of Fame this afternoon and I wouldn't be upset by him jumping to the front of the line. As much as I've wished ill-will on Mo in the past, it's a sad day for my baseball watching career to see his career end with such little fanfare. I would feel the same way if Jeter were to have the same problem. I can only imagine the pain that Yankees fans must be feeling and I'm actually sorry for them... as fans.

On the field, I'm super thrilled that the Red Sox will never have to face Mariano Rivera again. The Yankees will have to deal with the problems that regular teams deal with in the 8th and 9th innings. This could easily add an addition 3-5 losses for the Yankees in a GOOD season, and much more in one of those tragically bad season that most teams go through when their closers s*** the bed.
