I think this is the right move. Ace was actually both more durable and more dependable than Bard out of the bullpen last year.

Of all the pitchers in the BP to fill in for Bailey, I like his makeup the most for this role. His stuff? We'll see.

Seems like Aceves has more value pitching in the 6th/7th/8th

I feel the same way, but I can't say I hate this move either.

Agreed. He made a fantastic relief ace last year. Him and Paps created a synthesis of the relief ace and closer concept that I haven't seen since Oki was on his game.

Aceves must be excited about this. In his dreams tonight he will hear those beautiful words whispered by the baseball angels:

'Closer money'

He should able to close games. But damn his value was that rubber arm and 3 innings he does 3 times a week.

Maybe he'll be a closer/relief ace, and they'll use him to pitch multiple inning save situations three or four times a week.

I really like this idea. Hopefully that is the case

So much for the Melancon feel good story this morning.

I think Aceves can be a decent closer but would prefer Melancon. He has been a closer and had a higher k/9 rate last year. Of course, he did it in the NL and wasn't required to pitch as many innings.

The biggest thing though is taking Aceves out of the role he performed so well last year. I doubt there is anyone who will be able to fill his shoes.

I think you are right about that. Even though they will not find another reliever with the versatility of Aceves, do you think they should pursue another bullpen arm?

I for one am not sure if i really like or hate this idea. In a way it makes sense. but we have Melancon Albers and Morales doing 7-8 innings which makes my stomach churn already..

So Melancon isn't good enough for the 7th now?

Morales finished the year strong.

You'll never have a team of 25 All Stars.

from Aceves Bard Papelbon to Morales Melancon Aceves. you tell me ...

Morales always seemed like a loose canon not sure if i can count on him for some crucial outs.. Melancon until he gets a few innings under his belt i will always be suspicious. Aceves is still okay but like i said i am still scratching my head .. Bailey injurred his thumb and now out for 3 months...and we move Bard to the rotation, too many pieces moving around..i am not complaining but its like WTF just happened feeling...

sorry mate! i think i want to stop posting and let a week go by before i come back either venting or happy how the 1st week went..

Not sure how I feel about this. I hate to lose Aceves in his long relief role but this is probably the right move. This bullpen is going to need to nut up and quick.

I do think they need another bullpen arm but doubt they will or can acquire anyone significant at this point.

I only see two guys that are available: Mike Gonzalez and Marte. Of the two, I'd prefer Gonzalez.

It's easier to get a BP arm than an adequate SP. We'll see if the FO makes a move or stays cheap.
How much do you think it would cost to sign Mike Gonzalez? It's opening day and he has no takers.

I'm talking about making a trade. I don'tthink Gonzalez is an upgrade over what the Sox already have.
Do you think a trade is likely this early in the season? As for Mike Gonzalez, he has had some pretty decent years. I think he could be a serviceable arm, possibly an upgrade over Albers.
