It looks like the lack of pitching depth will an issue from the beginning. Thank goodness opening day doesn't matter.

Josh Beckett questionable for first start

Globe Staff April 2, 2012 10:25 AM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Josh Beckett has a thumb injury that is being checked out today in San Antonio, Texas, and is apparently questionable for his first start of the season.

Details are incomplete at this time. But Alfredo Aceves told reporters that Bobby Valentine told him to be prepared to start against the Tigers on Saturday and in the home opener on April 13.

"[Valentine] said Josh Beckett has an injury in his thumb. That's what he said and if he doesn't start the second game, I will start the second game and the first game at home," Aceves said. "And then he said, 'For now you're going to be in the bullpen.' "

A team spokesman confirmed that Beckett does have an injury that is being checked out. But Beckett did throw a lengthy bullpen session on Sunday.

Valentine will be speaking to reporters shortly.

It was learned on Sunday that closer Andrew Bailey has a thumb injury and may be headed to the disabled list. He will be in Boston today to be examined.

Aceves has worked as a starter all spring but did not get a spot in the rotation.

This just proves that old rule of thumb you can never have too much pitching!:D

Dear Lord. Don't even joke about such awful things.
You have to joke about something when your #1 starter and closer are on the shelf to start the season. Ah, opening day doesn't matter.

Bobby Valentine “totally” expects Josh Beckett to start second game

Posted by Dan Duggan at 10:20 am

FORT MYERS — Manager Bobby Valentine just told reporters that he “totally” expects Josh Beckett to make his scheduled start in the second game of the season in Detroit on Saturday. Valentine said Beckett has been dealing with a thumb “situation” for a few weeks.

Beckett threw 100 pitches in a bullpen session yesterday and Valentine said the pitcher felt great. Valentine said Beckett is getting checked out for “peace of mind” and is expected to join the team in Detroit on Wednesday.

The last time when Beckett got checked out for his peace of mind was in 2008 when he got pins and needles from sleeping on his arm. He missed three weeks and consulted doctors outside of the organization. When he came back, he was out of pitching shape. He threw two lousy games, one good game and then strained his lat, effectively ending the teams chances for back to back championships.

First off, I'm loving your not so subtle digs at my opening day comment, secondly just because it was an issue last time josh got checked out for peace of mind, that doesn't at all under any circumstance mean that's gonna be the case this time.

As for Beckett, people tend to follow behavioral patterns, and Beckett has shown himself in the last few to be a bit more of a delicate Princess and the Pea than the bulldog that I thought he would be when he was acquired. The last time the doctors cleared him and he still obsessed about the situation. If they tell him that the thumb is nothing serious, hopefully this time he will take their word for it.

Oh boy, between thumbs and wrists here comes the MASH unit. However, I did my rants yesterday and I am refraining from saying anything else on this matter except I hope all of you are having a nice morning and will have a wonderful day. Take care my friends.

Valentine will need to suspend team circle-jerks until further notice. Too many thumb injuries

Better than the team-on-fatboy gangbangs promoted by Girardi that result in broken ankles and strained shoulders.

CMon man, you can definitely do better than that. Sumo-wrestling, maybe. Do you need it on a tee

Hopefully Josh will not get bad news from the doctors he is visiting in Texas today. The biggest problem with Josh as it relates to injury is that he won't pitch unless is absolutely 100% healthy. If he does pitch when he is not 100% healthy he tends to be lousy and the insignificance of an injury really has never been a factor with him. Anything at all is a problem for Josh.

I happen to think that as far as the Sox pitching goes at least this year they are likely to be able to survive just about anything that happens outside of 1,2,3 in the rotation but can't really tolerate anything happening there. The fact that their chief rival in the east is already seeing some injury issues at least might level the playing field.

What this should show us is that the idea that you can escape injury to your pitching staff is just nonsense. Injuries will happen over the 162. Heck these teams can't even start the 162.

That's why s*** never dies. You bring it up when it isn't necessary. The last game was just as important. There's not one game that outweighs another.

I wonder if the media mantra is going to shift from chicken and beer to "thumbs up their asses"
Just like the GM during the off season.:lol:

The injury will have a new name and everything: The Cherington

"Aww man, the doctor says I pulled a Cherington in my thumb!"

Becketts hurt, or so he thinks. Came out in the news today with a thumb injury, the day after Bailey comes out with a thumb injury.

Redsox medical staff told him he was fine. He doesn't believe them so hes flying to Texas to get a second opinion.

Same old medical staff. Same old Beckett. Same clubhouse.

I thought we addressed these issues this offseason?

Apparently not, common denominator? Beckett.

I remember when I objectively looked at the season, and said, the Red Sox need one more pitcher and one more reliever. People started lumping me in with the pessimists. But when you looked at the health records of the guys on this team, and the medical malpractice that has become a norm in this organization, it was inevitable that someone would get hurt.

The Red Sox didn't need Darvish or Wilson. They needed Garland, or Duke, or Wheeler or Frasor. Whether they do well or not, the Red Sox have planned poorly for this season.
