Umm... yeah? Why can't something be a "marketing gimmick" and still a big part of the identity of an entertainment brand?

There is nothing wrong with gimmickry as long as it isn't overdone. I don't think the RSN stuff is really overdone, especially considering that a lot of Sox fans have internalized it.

All professional sports need marketing "gimmicks" to survive. That's why they came up up with the nicknames for the teams such as Red Sox, Dodgers Yankees etc. Without marketing MLB would be played in front a few thousand fans like it was before the !st World War.

Bloody sock invented? Yeah, they also invented the stitches in his ankle, too.

Can I sell you the Brooklyn bridge?

I recall some dumb announcer blurting that out during a network game a few years ago.

One of those big market pro-Yankee types that are common in those NY-based networks.

The Al Michaels crowd.

Pretty outrageous thing to say during a network game. I believe he got suspended for it.

Schilling has a big mouth, but he sure could pitch when it counted.

I don't get it SoxSport. A couple of months ago when I and a few of my colleagues were all over Varitek and Wakefield's ineffectiveness the past few years and were calling on them to retire or not be signed, we got attacked for being nasty to two players who simply didn't have it anymore----and they did retire. However, for whatever reason, many think that piling on Curt Schilling is a handsome cottage industry.

Let me remind those people that without Schilling we most certainly would not have won the World Series without him in 2004. That would have made 87 years and a lot more of angst among Red Sox fans my friends. Also, his pitching on that bum ankle, not only in the ALCS, the most courageous display of guts and balls I've ever seen displayed on a baseball field, but also in the WS, was a test of courage and team comes first mantra that other players may talk about but never put their money where their mouths are. Keep in mind that except for maybe a half-dozen performances afterward he was never the same pitcher ever again and it shortened his career. And look at his post-season record...And look at the Red Sox the four years he was with us. As I recollect he won big games in the ALDS, the ALCS and the WS e ven with stuff that was probably 50% of what he once had before the ankle injury. Curt was a champion and I will always think of him just that way.

Agree absolutely. What you see in the media are those big market NY apologists who can't stand anybody else succeeding. Look at the vilification they gave James for not joining the Knicks--and now Howard for not going to the Nets. Howard got a ton of pressure from his agent to go to NY. Why? Because it's more money for the agent.

Three cheers for Curt. He was a champion--even though he stole about $8 mil from them his last year. He deserved it anyways.

How long have you been a fan? As far back as I can remember -- say 1980.

How did you become a Red Sox fan? My family moved to Maine when I was three months old. No further explanation needed, probably.

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player? I love Pedroia, but I have to admit that I would loathe him if he played for NYY. I mean, more than the usual amount of loathing for a NYY. After that, probably Tacoby Bellsbury.

Who is your favorite all-time Red Sox player? (see avatar)

Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever? Interesting question. I see that there is much disdain for Julio Lugo, but really I just feel sad when I think of Lugo in Boston, not angry. I think it has to be Clemens.

What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)? Benin, West Africa (though I am writing from the neighboring country of Togo right now.)

What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan? Standing up and just screaming wordlessly at the TV screen when Papi fisted one into CF to win ALCS Game 5 in 2004. For some reason, I remember that much more clearly than the HR the previous day.

When was the first time you ever went to Fenway Park? I've never been. Oh, the shame. I've hinted broadly to my wife that a Beaneater-to-Fenway all-expenses-paid trip would be a satisfactory 40th birthday present in a few years. We'll see what she thinks of that.

Who is your least favorite Yankee player of all-time? Mr. Centaur himself, A-Rod.

Any other comments that you would like to add? I've converted Mrs. Beaneater pretty thoroughly, though she's not as gung-ho as me. 6-year-old Beaneater Jr. already knows that he is a Red Sox fan. 4-year-old Lil' Beaneater is confused and sometimes says that he likes the Yankees, but a few more years of electroshock therapy and solitary confinement should cure him of that.

Really tough....Dewey Evans, maybe....Jim Lonborg maybe...tremendous heart and courage in 67', left it all and then some out on the field

Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever?

Another tough one....Carl Everett I guess

What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)?

New Hampshire now

What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan?

So many choices... maybe Munson...great player....Red Sox killer, would rip your heart out, could actually see him chewing on it through his mask....hated him

It was one innocuous joke. If you don't understand the difference between that and your constant drum beating of "Varitek and Wake are coming" then I don't know what to say. It seems your comments were more chicken little than Paul Revere.

No one attacked you for not liking players, people complained because you questionned other posters as polyannas and made 100's of posts about FracoMa and boy blunder and Ben the boob without adding to the discussion.

And who is piling on Schill? One joke post? Really? Were you calling for Millar's head a few years ago? Mirabelli's?

You bring some good posts to the table and have lots of baseball knowledge, but it would serve you better to just relax a bit. Don't get so worked up. It's not worth it. This should be enjoyable, but you always seem pissed off.

Orioles announcers aren't typically pro-Yankee.

How long have you been a fan?

Since 1966.

How did you become a Red Sox fan?

Moved from Lousiville Ky, to Newton, Ma in the fall of 1966 when my Dad took a job teaching Biology at Boston College. I had never even touched a baseball until that moment. Never had seen a game. My Dad was a big time scientist that chose to teach at BC only because he had a chance (finally) to live in a NHL city (He was an accomplished hockey player in Europe and here in HS and College). Anyway, my family landed in a working class section of a rich Boston suburb and I became immersed in baseball immediately. I've loved the game ever since.

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player?

Pedroia. Then Ellsbury.

Who is your favorite all-time Red Sox player?

Yaz, followed closely by George Scott.

Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever?

Carl Everett. Then maybe Wil Coredeiro.

What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)?

Massachusetts, USA. There is a map on Talksox that shows our geographical distribution.

What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan?

A pigeon s***ing on my head while sitting in the left field grandstands watching a double header against the Brewers comes to mind but certainly my friendship with the entire Baltimore bullpen one year is up there too! But watching Joe Rudi entertain the crowd during a rain delay of the Sonny Siebert - Vida Blue showdown was THE BEST sport related memory I recall. Just wonderful s***.

When was the first time you ever went to Fenway Park?

1967

Who is your least favorite Yankee player of all-time?

Mickey Rivers, of course!

Any other comments that you would like to add?

I don't hate the Yankees! I just think that some of the New York sports teams fans are total pukes and that New York City is a sub-human environment.

I felt that this board could benefit from the creation and/or bumping of some threads not directly related to how awful the Sox have been this season. This seemed like a good one to resurrect, and seeing as I hadn't posted in it originally, here you are.

How long have you been a fan? I was a late bloomer. I never cared for baseball, when I was younger I considered sports in general boring. That changed in 2001-2002 when my father started getting tickets through work and took me to several games. I wish I could say that it was the Sox that inspired me to become a baseball fan, but it was the fans and the game of baseball in general. I likely would have become an instant fan of whatever team my father got the tickets for. As soon as I got back from the second or third game he took me to, I immediately buried myself in stats and history until I knew as much as I could possibly know, and the rest is history.

How did you become a Red Sox fan? See above

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player? Pedroia

Who is your favorite all-time Red Sox player? Of those I saw play, Pedro. Of those I didn't, Williams, because, well...he's Ted motherf***ing Williams.

Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever? Tough call. There are plenty of guys who sucked that I could choose just because of that, but as far as Red Sox players who were with the team for extended periods of time, in my lifetime, Carl Everett.

What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)? Connecticut

What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan? Clay Buchholz's no-hitter, which he threw only days before I left for the Army for what, at the time, I had assumed would be a full four years.

When was the first time you ever went to Fenway Park? 2001 was the first time that I remember, I believe I went once when I was too young to recall.

Who is your least favorite Yankee player of all-time? Sheffield, Swisher, A-Rod, Teixeira, Joba Chamberlain, Roger Clemens.

Fan since 1975

1975 season got me hooked

Laser show (Played second base in high school so always follow that position)

Yaz is favorite Sox of all time

Clemens is least favorite for a variety of reasons

Live behind enemy lines in New Jersey

2004 playoff come back against Evil Empire is greatest Sox moment

Saw Fenway for the first time in 2005

Dislike anyone who puts the Spanky uniform on (Chances are they bought him)

I hate the Yankees!

Posted

I became a fan about 8 years ago, when I was almost too young to remember. The first season I remember was 2004 ironically.

My Grandpa was watching games one day and I just started watching. That's how I became a fan.

Favorite player: Ross

Favorite all time player: Ted Williams

Least favorite player: In the span of my fanhood, Julio Lugo or Damon because he went to the Yanks right after

Live in Connecticut

Dave Roberts' stolen base in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS

First went to Fenway in 2005

Least favorite Yankee: All of them except Jeter. Jeter is my favorite MLB player.

Posted

fan since 1948. remember since 1949.

probably Red Sox over Braves because of Ted Williams--living in Boston.

Ted Williams would be my favorite. Hero of all the kids my age in those days. And really, a great American hero.

Least favorite? I guess it would be one of those overpaid princes that lousy front office has been signing the last couple of years. Also the two managers who screwed up the '75 and '86 world series they should have won--Johnson and McNamara.

Greatest thrill would be winning the 04 World Series, sweeping the Cardinals, and predicting it to a couple of ESPN sports reporters I ran into at the airport (I had met one of them previously). They predicted the Cardinals in a sweep. I told them they were nuts. The Sox had better pitching. There it is, pitching is always the difference.

Least favorite Yankee would be Nettles--who ruined Bill Lee's career by going after his left shoulder in a fight. f*** you, Nettles.

Favorite Yankee was Mantle--who handed me an autographed picture at a dinner 3 months before he died. As good a ballplayer as ever lived, in my view. Also liked Billy Martin and Yogi. Great competitors.

Hank Bauer, too. Battle of the Bulge hero, WWII. Favorite Yankee now would be Jeter.

First Fenway game? I was at the playoff game against Cleveland they lost in '48, but don't remember it. I do remember '49-50 and still have Fenway programs from '50-52.

How long have you been a fan?

I’d say I’ve been a fan for around 14 years.

How did you become a Red Sox fan?

I have my mother and grandfather to thank for this. I grow up in a football family. My father coached my brother in football from peewee to high school. My grandfather (on my father's side) is in the high school football coaching Hall of Fame in Massachusetts. So football is in my blood. Because I didn't like getting hit, when I did play quarterback from little bit, I decided to go pitch from my local little league baseball team. Well one thing led to another. My mother started to introduce me to the sport, and my grandfather (on my mother's side) started to introduce me to the Red Sox.

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player?

Jon Lester

Who is your favorite all-time Red Sox player?

Jason Varitek

Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever?

J.D Drew

What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)?

Currently I live in Tampa, FL. Although, that’s going to change soon. I’m planning on moving to Boston Next year.

What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan?

I was staying the night at my uncle’s house in Somerville on October in 2004. He went to bed cursing the Sox again. Saying they are going to screw everything up like they always do in October. Well, we all know what happened. They came back to win that elimination game and ended up winning the series against the Yankees.

When was the first time you ever went to Fenway Park?

I’ve never been. I’ve always wanted to but I couldn’t afford to go.

Who is your least favorite Yankee player of all-time?

Johnny Damon

Manny was a big hit while his show was running. But his exit was all wrong. Trouble is, both he and Papi, it appears, were juicing it all those big years. Probably most all the big hitters 8-10 years ago were juicing it.

Manny was using it I agree, but Papi i dont think so. his name has been mentioned in that NY "cough bastards cough" report but nothing more has come out. he has been clean for the last 8 years.

and his exit was as disoriented one I can remember in baseball, him shoving one of the staff members, and Youk had a little incident in the dugout.. seriously why is it always Boston .. i sometimes ask..
