He probably wants all MLB employee's to honor their contracts to the end. Other then that' date=' I agree, i'm not sure why he wants it that way.[/quote']Essentially, he got traded to the Cubs. I don't know what interest Selig would have in impeding upward mobility of FO personell if there is no tampering. How is it different than trading a player under contract? I know this is not your argument. I read the same article you did that made the statement that Selig wants to discourage this. I just don't understand why. Maybe the writer had a slow news day and was just filling space. The only reason that I can think of that Selig will make the Cubs pay more than they want to pay would be to encourage teams to decide the compensation up front instead of placing it in his hands.

Ya it's an odd deal. At this point I don't really even care and when it finally get's done it will probably be nothing more then a side note.

A resolution on the Theo Epstein compensation deal is imminent, reports Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston. Edes' MLB source says the Red Sox will receive one quality minor leaguer, a legitimate big-league prospect, from the Cubs.

McNutt's name is being tossed around.I hope it is him and he's good and makes the team. There is comdeic gold in that name for sure.

No McNutt:

9:15am: The Red Sox will receive a pitcher from the Cubs' 40-man roster, tweets WEEI's Alex Speier. That'd rule out McNutt. Rafael Dolis, Chris Carpenter, Jeff Beliveau, and Casey Weathers are on the Cubs' 40-man and cracked Baseball America's top 30 prospects for the team.

We need some SR about these pitchers. Please no Bleacher reports or anyone blogging from their mothers basement :)

So it could be Garza then?!?!?!?

J/K, I'll be happy with a middle or long reliever. Iwasn't expecting anything more than a AAA type guy.

The Carpenter kid looks good from what I have read about him so far(not much to be honest). Dolis looks like he could be a good late inning BP arm.

We're getting Carpenter and a PTBNL.

Red Sox Receive Chris Carpenter, PTBNL As Epstein Compensation

By Tim Dierkes [February 21 at 10:33am CST]

The Red Sox received 26-year-old righty reliever Chris Carpenter and a player to be named later from the Cubs as compensation for Theo Epstein, tweets Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. The Red Sox placed Bobby Jenks on the 60-day DL to create a 40-man roster spot. Epstein said in a statement:

"I am relieved that this process is over and particularly pleased that the teams were able to reach agreement on their own without intervention from MLB. I truly hope and believe that this resolution will benefit both clubs, as well as Chris, who is an extremely talented reliever joining a great organization at a time when there's some opportunity in the major league bullpen. More than anything, I'm excited that we can all move forward and focus exclusively on getting ready for the season. I wish Chris and the Red Sox nothing but the best in 2012 and beyond."

Carpenter, who made his big league debut with the Cubs last year, was recently ranked 13th on their prospect list by Baseball America. The Cubs converted Carpenter to relief late in 2010, and he averaged 96.5 miles per hour on his fastball in the Majors last year. His command and control are works in progress, but Baseball America thinks he could develop into a setup man.

Throwing strikes seems to be a big challenge for Carpenter.

We waited 100 days for this guy? Boy did Larry botch this one.

You were expecting more for "Blunder?" Really? All your railing against him and you thought he was worth more?

I hope you are enjoying your endless days of rainy weather. The rest of us are happy not being completely miserable.

One man's trash is another man's treasure---you've never heard that? IMO Blunder sucks at what he does--really badly. But if the Cubs think otherwise, which they obviously do, then why shouldn't they pay top dollar? He was under contract here for 2012. At the very least Larry should have threatened to have him sit out the season and watch, at which point the Cubs would have had to have gone in a another direction, without their 'alleged' savior? hahaha...

Horrible, horrible job by Lucchino and Cherington. Amateurish at best. For whatever reasons, the corporate end of this franchise has bottomed out. It should be clear to everyone that not a single one of them belongs in the jobs they're currently doing. I wouldn't hire this clueless bunch to take out my trash.

Wouldn't following through on that that mean paying Epstein for a year to do nothing? And not getting any compensation whatsoever? Hard to see how that would be a beneficial move.

They had success with Bard and his control. Is it inconceivable they can have the same success with Carpenter? If they get him right he could be a huge power arm in the back of the BP. He isn't a spring chicken. But he is at the very edge of entering his prime. If the dude can throw 100 MPH he is worth the time and effort IMO.

Does he have minor league options left?

Posted
He's got to have minor league options left, but as for gaining command, that's rare at 25YO. It happens, but not frequently. Usually if it's going to happen, a guy has enough command to handle a big league lineup by then.

True, but I think he is young enough to where he's worth investing a couple years into. Guys with his kind of arm don't grow on trees. If he was a upper 80's junk baller at 25 I would be selling this. But he's got something most guys don't have.

Andrew Miller 2.0?

This is a "meh" move. Having another 6th/7th inning guy couldn't hurt. Maybe he'll fill the void of Dan Wheeler?

Except his WHIP is around 2.
