But Bailey is so cheap at $4 million.;)

Had the Sox signed Madson and he'd gotten injured, i bet he'd be railing on the Sox for not "doing due diligence anyway".

Dude's absolutely ridiculous.

We all knew that Bailey has injury issues and the team was taking a chance in signing him, but that is only the half of it. How the hell could he have hurt his thumb while no one seemed to know anything about it, not the conditioning staff, not the medical staff, certainly not those of us who live and die with the team?- Or do we have a CIA type crew running the show where secrecy is the art form of the day? And if Bailey's thumb was injured why wasn't he g iven an MRI to ascertain the severity of the injury?

I am doing a very slow burn writing this my friend because this seems to be another in a long line of Red Sox screwups and well too late to change things now---like annointing Bard as the closer the minute Papelbon signed with the Phillies. Think we might have been in a better way if that had been done?

Well, they clearly should of overpaid for Paps who didn't want to be here anyway...

The same guy who lost game 162 to a punch and judy O's team. He's not the pitcher from 07 anymore.

Fred' date=' did you ever consider the fact that maybe, just maybe, Bailey's thumb issue is a minor thing that happened during camp?[/quote']

No, that's not earth shatteringly horrible enough.

He didn't want to be here, because they didn't want to pay him and made no attempt to sign him. Bailey

Dude's absolutely ridiculous.

No User, Dude's NOT absolutely ridiculous if you were referring to SCM. He mentioned that Bailey has not pitched in 10 days and that means his thumb was causing him discomfort back then. Why all the secrecy? Why does our front office have to act like the CIA instead of what it's supposed to be, and maybe, possibly, could it be that person who suggested that Bard be annointed as the closer the moment Papelbon was signing with the Phillies was more on the ball that Cherries jubilee and Co.? Can't remember who the guy was but he ought to be given medal for doing the job that our bumbling GM should have been doing. Great way to enter a new season---no closer, no real rotation and no GM.

If I had a dollar for every time someone whined about not overpaying Papelbon' date=' the mega millions lottery would be overrated.[/quote']If Bailey average his usual 40 innings/yr, he too will be overpaid at $4 million.

So the entire season was his fault? He was one of maybe 4 or 5 players that gave a s*** last year.

I would rather pay 4 million for 40 elite innings than 15 million of 60 elite innings.

What evidence is there for that? All the interviews with him make him seem like he cared much more about himself than the team.

I wasn't referring to SCM, i was referring to a700 and his knack for never being content with anything.

Also, i don't know what you're talking about here. Bailey had some thumb discomfort, they tried to work through it, discomfort didn't subside, and he gets a DL stint. Is it necessary to create a press conference every time a player gets a boo-boo?

No need to overthink it. Like the Wakefield/Varitek situation.

Also, aren't you one of the many that says Bard doesn't have the "mental makeup" to be a closer?

Which is it?

Why do you need a direct line whenever someone is dinged up? This "secrecy" crap reminds me of the tinfoil Wake and Tek posts from the winter. Not everything is a conspiracy.

One of the Four Horseman has cometh forward today. :o

Yeah, definitely agree with you. Put into perspective:

The Red Sox appear to have lost their closer for what sounds like will be somewhere between five and ten games.

The Yankees have lost a valuable setup man for an entire season, and their number two starter is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury after showing low velocity all spring.

So, the additional 10 saves don't have value to you. To each his own. The late innings will be very uncomfortable for us as fans this season. I have no doubt about that. We've been spoiled by the stability that the 2 studs Papelbon and Bard have given us over the years.

Wake and Tek were offered minor league contracts and invitations to Spring Training.

Did they show up?

Which was the point of contention of everyone here all along: They weren't going to show up. It was just a gentle push out the door from the FO, which Valentine acknowledged.

You're acting as of bailey and melancon are complete scrubs as pitchers. Wait until the shits the fan before you complain about the stink. Bard is better than melancon I grant you but mark has had success and baileys pretty damn good himself when he's on the field and I think he can put up numbers comparable to paps

They knew they werent going to accept them. It was their unofficial way of telling them they had moved on.

They did not want them back.

Wake was in Ft. Myers testing the waters right from the beginning, and maybe one or both of them would have suited up had it not been for Bobby V saying that neither had a chance of making the team. A team doesn't usually cut ties with players by offering them minor league contracts. It wasn't as tinfoil as you think.

So you want to pay 1.1 million dollars per save?

When it counts, Papelbon has failed the last three years. He is five months removed from blowing a save that kicked the Red Sox out of the playoffs. He is one year away from a season where he blew 8 saves, and two years past a season where he lost a deciding game in the playoffs. He is not the next Rivera.

I don't know why you guys think he's so phenomenal. He's good, great even. But not THAT good.

Bailey if healthy, is a very good pitcher.

Melancon has proven very little. He had a great year last year pitching for a last place team with little to no pressure. Hes looked like s*** this spring to boot. His fastball has little life and hes sitting in the high 80's low 90's.

Even if so I can see bard getting pushed to the pen and then we have melancon settling in as another middle relief arm with Danny boy and bailey anchoring the 8th and 9th.
