Actually I would not be surprised to see the Phils bust the Luxury Tax threshold. They have the horses now. They can definitely get to and win the WS.

Apparently Jayson Stark from ESPN is reporting that the deal includes a vesting option. Could bring the the deal well over 60 million. That makes more sense.

It worked out great. The WS win in 2004 was worth every penny they paid him.

But there is no guarantee that Papelbon will win this team a world series. The last two times he pitched with the season on the line, he blew the save, and if he didn't blow 8 saves in 2010, the Red Sox could have gone to the playoffs-- with a great rotation and Youk ready to rejoin the offense. Paps is not worth 50 million. No non-Rivera reliever is.

I have a feeling Madson will be signed by us i just have that gut feeling.

I'd rather go out and sign K-Rod, Broxton, and another arm or 2 for the same price as 1 Madson. Maybe this actually was a blessing in disguise.

Of course he isn't worth the entire 50 million but they have plenty of money to bring back a guy who has proven he can be an elite closer in this market. It will not be easy replacing Papelbon.

Are we actually trying to make Paps out to be the best closer in baseball?. I would rather

get a starter then a closer at this stage in the game.

He is the best closer in Red Sox history and he is one of the best in the game.

We will find out now won't we lol. I wish Paps nothing but the best unless he plays us of course.

They cannot replace him. It took 40 years for them to get a closer like him. They aren't getting another one like him for a while. It just ain't gonna happen.

You don't need to spend big money on a guy to come in and pitch the 9th inning when you can't get to the 9th without a chance to win the game. This team has way bigger issues to deal with than its closer because the other issues it has all wreck havoc in innings 1-8.

He'll be playing against us, because in friggin interleague we get to play Philly while the yanks play the hapless Mets.

Can I add Gagne's name to the list? Elite elite pitcher, injured through years 29 and 30 of his life, retired at 32.

I know that but i think we have bigger issues then the closer role unless bard completely sucks.

But hey, we got the 31st pick in next years draft and Henry has more money to invest in his soccer team!

Those are all the largest contracts given out to relievers. All of them have been bad contracts. It doesn't matter whether you would have made the deal or not, almost all of the biggest reliever contracts have been bad deals.

About half of them signed their contracts at or after age 34 (Hoffman age 39). Papelbon's contract will be over at age 34. Bogus comparison :thumbdown

They could have given big money to Papelbon and fixed the other issues.

The per season cost was no more than the Sox paid Papelbon in 2011. He's only 30. I think he will hold up until age 34.

I was hoping we would sign Paps, but it does open up 12 million to sign 2 top setup men for Bard.

50-50 chance we wind up with a better bullpen. We're probably going to have more save situations.
