Here's a thought.

Aceves logged enough innings this year that you could legitimately stretch him to 150 or so. It might be worth a try to make a starter of him.

a contract swap that would fix the "a little bit too much left handed hitting" problem.

That's not a "problem" that many teams have ever had, and I find it humorous

But they would kill that .889 WP!

Why is it humorous?

I wouldn't bank on Ortiz hitting LHP next year the same way he did this year, add to that Crawford's ongoing struggles against LHP, the fact that whoever ends up winning the RF is likely to be a young LHH and Youkilis' durability issues, and another right handed bat capable of hitting for power doesn't sound like a bad idea.

It doesnt come off the salary cap' date=' though, which is what Henry wants to avoid. [/quote']

MLBTrade Rumors reports that this isn't accurate:

New Red Sox GM Ben Cherington announced that righty John Lackey will undergo Tommy John surgery. The surgery causes a sixth-year option to vest for Lackey at the league minimum and reduces the average annual value of the contract from $16.5MM to $13.8MM, creating luxury tax savings.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but i'd like to know who's right in order to know where the Sox stand for next year.

That sounds right. Its only a saving of 2.7 from the luxury cap, but it still helps. The average annual value is lower, so it should immediately go into effect.

More from the "random musings of the slightly deluded armchair GM" file...

I wonder what Scott Kazmir is doing these days. If there was any way to get his arm healthy, it might be worth at least sticking him in the minors and seeing what he had left. Kid was a stud a few years ago and he's still only in his late 20's, he's prime reclamation project material.

Of course if there was any way to get his arm healthy, you could count on our joke of a medical staff not to figure it out.

Sounds like you have a good idea for a custom title?

I suggested him earlier and everybody seemed to hate the idea. I think he's worth the risk though.

Stick him in the minors. If he isn't ready to come back yet, not much lost, but the reward is too high not to take the chance IMHO. If it fails, who cares, but if we get lucky and get the old Scott Kazmir back? Well we're due for one of those to work and wouldn't it be awesome.
